Acer Aspire AX1300-E1820A (Refurbished) AMD Athlon X2 7550 Dual-Core 2.5G, 3G DDR2, 320GB, GeForce8200 (HDMI), Super-Multi DVD Drive, GigaLAN, Card Reader, Wireless LAN, Windows Vista Home Premium, Keyboard & Mouse

What do you guys think about this deal? I want to buy a desktop this weekend. I already have a LCD monitor.

I don't use the computer for gaming. The desktop is used mostly for MS office and internet surfing. I do use the rogers anti-virus/spyware/parental control, which seems to slow down my current desktop. thats why going for dual core.

any suggestions?

I think that is a great deal! I see it has an even lower promotional price of $324.99. Definitely worth it. The specs are decent as well. :)

I don't know about refurb, and Athlons in Laptops tend to heat up awfully fast.

How much heat and noise will this produce?

You can save some more $$ (at least $50) if you order this unit from Canada Computers online discount operation (xpresscanada.ca). They are shipping from Quebec, so they dont charge you PST (save approx $25) and they do not charge the Ontario Electronics Tax (save approx $14). I ordered an Acer desktop computer from them last week and they didnt even charge me shipping to Ontario (YMMV). Retails for $313.83 (save approx $20) at their site:

Great post and the XpressCanada one is even better! A lot to like in this PC even if the CPU isn't top of the line.

What is up with Canada Computers online storefront shipping from Quebec? Oh well, if it saves the PST (until income tax time of course...)

Also, what is up with the guy who thought this was a laptop?

+1.

Excessive noise is a dealbreaker for me, have Athlons improved since the loud/noisy Athlon XP days? :)

I have a 7750 and it runs very quietly and is always cool, even with a 10% overclock. CPU are inherently silent, so i think its a little unfair to say that AMD's are loud. I used to run an athlon XP with a Zalman 7000B AlCu cooler and it was as quiet as anything I've used. Get a good (quiet) power supply and CPU fan and your machine will be silent regardless of processor type.

However, if you are looking for something cool and quiet, you need to look at the 45 nm athlon chips.

By the way, how long has xpresscanada shipped from Quebec? I ordered something in may and wasn't charged PST. I have to say, paying tax is a bit of a dealbreaker for me, particularly if they don't have a B&M store for me to go to. CC is always more expensive...

I have an still have my Athlon XP, it has nothing to do with CPU.
You can easily replace fan with bigger/quieter version.
Also check the software, so you can slow down the spin speed.

If that's all you plan to do with your comp then that rig is more than enough, don't sweat it.

I'm guessing this is eligible for the Windows 7 upgrade?
