View Full Version : Games Microplay - Trade 3 or more games (40.50 value), get MW 2 or A.C. 2 for free
La Fleur

For those who have access to a Microplay, this is their big promo for the month:
Trade 3 games or more to get Assassin's Creed 2 or Modern Warfare 2 for free. The way their T3 works, the 3 games have to TOTAL a minimum of $40.50 in trade credit. So, you could trade in a bunch of low-value games to get it, as long as there are at least 3 you trade in.
It's also possible to get COD: Reflex for the Wii (40.50 trade minimum as well), along with the PSP and DS Assassin's Creed 2 games (20.50 or 22.50 minumum).
This is yet another alternative for those looking for these games. The deal is as hot as you can make it. Microplay offers better values on some games, while not so much on others. For those who end up spending around $40-ish for their COD (i.e. Best Buy) this is roughly the same at MP.
Update: Promo now up on MP's site. Link for full details:

I find these deals are good when you can find 2 decent TIV games that might be lower elsewhere and add a third stinker (low tiv game that might be hard to sell). For example, trade in a game worth 18, 20, and 5 (totals 43). It's best to bring in a whack of games, even ones you might not think work, since there's no real consistent updates on MP tivs.
A couple games, such as Bourne, Fable 2, COD 4, Resi 4 still should have decent tivs there. A lot of the games that work at other places, like RP, will not necessarily work here, since I find MP updates their used game prices fairly quickly with the competition.

Sorry to hear that. Well, so far my first thread feels very lonely . . . <hears own voice echoing back>
I'm hoping those who go to MP could throw down some tivs that would work with this promo. A lot of the cheap RV games I can't see working, since most retail for $19.99 or less at MP. Twilight Princess would be good, but as long as FS offers 37, this would be pointless. Maybe some lesser known Wii games?

Ya hardly anyone posts MP trade ins I did a few times but seemed pointless...I find they have way better trade in values for lower valued games normally trumping bbv and nowadays ebs tiv.
I would be heading there but already got these two through ebs t3g1f. I love buying games there, all used games Ive ever bought there are free of scratches and 99% are in mint condition. Prices are high on some things but Ive found many good deals in my local MP.

This is pretty cool since if your 3 games only add up to like $39, you can add in a copy of NHL 7 or something to put it over the top.

According to their website/game mags, $36 is the max tiv they give. The most I've ever got was $30 and that was one time. Generally, I trade newer games that have been out for a few months, since they tend to stagger their price drops, rather than make one massive drop like the other stores do. MP is not the place to go for brand new, weeks-old releases. Try RP or BBV.

Exactly! I love this promo for the very fact that it can be used to trade a couple decent games and one turd to just push it over the 40.50 threshold. The only catch is if they have millions of NHLs, they may not take it, regardless of trade value. They seem to get hammered with lots of sports games, but any other old titles, like condemned, lost planet, etc. they should take, since they don't have as much used stock as EB. PS3 games seem to be in big demand there. Tons of 360 sports games, so expect rejection. Also, quite a few Wii games, so don't be surprised if some of tivs are lower. I think Mad World just tanked in value there. Used to be 20 when I traded mine in during the summer. All Nintendo games hold value well there.
Hope these tips help:)

It would be a good promo for me if it applied to other games as well. I already pre-ordered MW2 and AC2 from BB for $49.99, but I have a couple of games with a TIV of <$8 at EBGames that I would've liked to offload. Oh well, I just hope they have a similar promo when BioShock 2 is released next year.

They usually run this promo every other month or 2 months when a big title(s) is released. They did this back in September for NHL 10 and in the summer for a big title I can't recall at the moment, and I'm pretty sure for Gears 2 last year. I could see them doing it early next year for either Splinter Cell, Bioshock, Mass Effect or Mafia 2. They usually throw a sale or 2 in before their next T3. I'm sure they'll have something good in December for C-mas, either a sale or some deals on specific titles. They usually update their website in a timely fashion, but some stores have their own sales depending on if they need to boost revenue, add stock, etc.

MP also has good sales on USED games every 2 months or so..
august long weekend they had buy 2 used games get 1 free for games equal or lesser value... basically they had a bunch of $40 TIV games at EB that they sold for 29.99... so i would grab 2 games i knew i was gonna trade in...the third game that i wanted.. so spend $60+tax at microplay.. trade in for $80 or $100 (with a 25% bonus at EB) plus taxes at EB for pre-orders... basically get that $100+tax credit back.. sell it for like 90-95... end up making like $25 in cash AND your free 29.99 game for yourself...
then in october long weekend they had the buy 1 used game get the next one 50% off (equal or less value)... not exactly as good.. but still decent.. if u were doing the same as before, not as good...
comparing them... 6 games with $40 TIV in august cost $90+tax then... in october.. the deal was $105+Tax...
so im thinking that they will have something maybe at the start of december.. or push it along to boxing week when they will probably want to clear our lots of used game stock

Considering these 2 promos run until the 25th and 30th respectively, which gives them enough time to build up used stock before C-mas, I'd think a boxing week sale is the earliest we'll see something. They might have some small promo in between, to advertise a December release, like Saboteur or Avatar. YMMV as some stores could hold their own private sale if they feel like it's necessary.

microplay is STILL in business?!
as far as i can remember microplay is notorious for marking up their games much higher than anywhere else and their buy back on used games was a complete joke. i remember them offering something like $8.00 for a game and then marking it up to $59.99. i don't know anywhere in mississauga except square one that still has a microplay. i guess all those high markups, low buyback prices combined with all those suckers buying/trading from them, are keeping them in business. :confused:

Just got back from MicroPlay and I think I got screwed. I was hoping of exchanging Resident Evil 5, Killzone 2 plus some other crappy game. However, the TIV on KZ2 is horrible... a whopping 7.50$ !!!
I did notice their shelves were pretty well stocked though. Probably everyone is looking to swap KZ2 (previous best shooter on ps3) for MW2. So i ended up trading the following:
* Resident Evil 5 @ 18$
* Little Big Planet @ 25$ :*(
* Killzone 2 @ 7.50$

Some of those games do seem to have pretty low TIVs compared to what they are selling them for in their used section. But those that are on the shelves might have been bought at a higher price a couple of weeks/months ago. They have to be cheap on the TIVs because they dont want to be stuck with 'em forever. (IMO)
When you look at this promotion (trade 3games [41$ min] for a full retail game), you know you are getting a bad deal anyway.
When they give you 8$ for a game, it's always to sell them for 30 $ or more the next day. In order to get to 41 $ you will need more than 3 * 8$ games (either you're gonna give em 4, 5 games or you're gonna give'em games whose TIVs are closer to 15$)
In the end they are gonna make at least 100$ out of whatever you trade in & they give you a 59.99 or 69.99 game which cost them less than that obviously (Those dumb employees dont work for free, even if its not too far from it)
The taxes you save arent coming out of their pockets either since they dont apply in a trade.
If gamers would be a little wiser, they could sell em themselves (Ebay, Craigslist, etc.) or actually trade their game to friends / co-workers.
Except for games that have huge multiplayer portions (Like COD), when you get a game that is single player only and doesnt have any replay value, hold on to it and make sure your best pal wait a little and plays your copy instead of buying the same game twice, then getting 5$ for it in a trade-in.
Some wise game sharing / trading with like minded friends could make each game cost you 20$ instead of 60$.
Cut out the middle-man !

Sounds like you're describing EB's business model . . . :cheesygri
Actually, this is probably true for most Microplays, but they are frachised so each store makes up its own markups and tivs. This was probably their down fall. Seems like some have a lot of luck finding cheap games there, while others have had bad experiences. Personally, I've only ever had good experiences. I never trade in new games there, as the max tiv is 30 or 35. But, I find they're good for some niche games and middle of the road ones (not too old, not too new). Mainly I go there to find cheap games, 75% of the time cheaper than EB at least.

Aside from Killzone, you didn't really get screwed on tivs. Resi 5 has dropped to around 20 almost universally, since it can be bought for $39 at RP, and if it's PS3, the Alternative edition comes out next yr, which will drop this value down even quicker. LBP is 27.60 at FS, so $25 is not a bad tiv. Killzone 2 though, does sound like a big rip for a 8 month old game.
That being said, you should have traded at RP or BB. You probably could have used only 2 for MW.

@charlie
kijiji is usually my best friend when buying games. This is especially true for single-player games where it doesn't really matter if I have to wait a month before playing it. I usually get 1month old games for 40$ that way. For MW2 however, I wanted to have it right away to get in on the multiplayer asap.
@La Fleur:
I assume BB is Best Buy and not Blockbuster ? And forgive my ignorance, but RP ?? Looking at tivs.ca they (BB) do seem to have better resale value. Lesson learnt I guess !

Yes, Best Buy has good resale for new games. Pretty comparative to FS and RP. Kijiji is great. I used it all the time for cheap games. But, I sometimes tire of playing the waiting game, people that try to rip you off, or keep delaying the trade, so it's nice to get in on some trade promos since they are guaranteed and time specific.

Here are the TIVS/values of games at Microplay (Sunday Nov 15):
Red Bull DC Ds - $4.50 ($10 at WMT - $5 coupon from Kelloggs for Wii/DS games, I got it when they had 50% off games that cost $10, so was free)

Imagine Movie Star DS - $9.00 ($0.98 at WMT)
Mysims Party Wii - $6.00 ($10 at WMT now - $5 coupon from Kelloggs for Wii/DS games, filler to make your total over $40.50 in TIV)

example at rogers was ghostbusters wii for $10 used and wolverine wii for 12.50 used... traded in to BB for MW2..

Sweet, I'm glad someone got in on this deal. It really is a great promo, just takes a little more digging to get it right. Surprised by the high value of DS game and Gran Turismo at $9 is probably the highest outside of Kijiji'n it. Nicely done.
