Hello!!
Would you please help me with my decision. I'm looking for a hood fan for island 36" with glass. I visited many websites and found only few in Canada. One of the lowest prices are at www.kitchenhoods.ca. I'm in Toronto and have buy it online and get it shipped. I would like to buy from Canadian company, not American. Anybody had any experience with this company? Looks like they have many options and models.
Can you help with some info??
Thanks in advance!

I don't know that company but I've seen glass Luftig fans at Ikea. Consists of a flat glass plate and stainless steel piping going up. They sell (I think) for around $1200 to $1800 but I saw some in the AsIs sections at Burlington and Etobicoke for around $500 or $700 last week. Sorry I didn't look very closely at pricing and models when I was there.
I have a Luftig HOO T50S new in box (36" glass) that I plan to use in my new kitchen. I almost scrapped it from the design last week and would have sold it, but for now, it's back in. Love the fan, but it is just a little large for my space. So I'm reconfiguring cabinets to fit it in.

The fans from kitchenhoods.ca are good price, but seem to be noisier than brand names. And they seem to be the only dealer for those hoods.
And they are really vague around whether the fans are CSA approved. They seem to be OK in BC but not sure about the rest of Canada

Ikea hoods are underperforming and WAY over priced.
For a island hood, I would recommend 600 - 900+ CFM. This is due to the fact island hoods are generally mounted higher, and with the more open air of and island, the grease/smoke has more area to travel.
You may also want to consider getting a 48" hood if you have a 36" cook top - just to provide a large trapping area.
If noise is an issue, consider an externally mounted blower, but considering you're even looking at KitchenHoods.ca, this option maybe out of your budget.

I checked my own Ikea fan, it has a rating of 480cfm, which is fine from my perspective (slide-in range, not an island). As I recall, the air flow was actually better than fans I was considering at Home Depot. But it is a lot less than coolspots recommendation of 900 for an island.
I saw an Ikea model in the "as-is" section at Ikea Burlington yesterday, $850 down from $1600. I'm assuming it is the same as mine, which is made by Whirlpool with a Whirlpool warranty, capable of pushing through 50ft of pipe (less if you add elbows), the chimney telescopes from 24" to 44" and the fan has a noise rating of 9.9 sones.

Good topic. We've been in the same boat for 3+ yrs. Need an approx 36"/1m wide ceiling hood for an island range. We actually bought a wall-mount unit, whose rear I thought looked fine (it was silver-painted steel, not the brushed S/S of the other 3 sides, plus there were rivets; but basically perfectly attractive), but my mom didn't like that rear, so she returned it. It was a great price, about $300 at Costco.
But while we had it, it gave me a good chance to have a look at the internals. And you know what? I believe there exists (drum roll) no more overpriced electrical home device than a range hood. It was -- literally -- a tapered mouth, an empty square tube, one fan, 2 puck lights, and the switches.
To think that even a microwave oven, with much more complicated innards, can cost $60, makes me feel that any hood over $300 is overpriced. Seriously.
As for your query, I suggest you go look at the one at Costco.

Well, we've purchased an island type range hood from www.kitchenhoods.ca 2 years ago. Still looks and works great, we love it!!
A month ago we had some issues with the lights but called their number and they've sent us a free replacement part (transformer), even though our warranty expired a year ago.
Can't complain so far...
