Saw this today at Burlington Super Centre Walmart. The price drops from $699 to $499. It is a pretty decent laptop for the price. The sale rep mentioned he had 8 on Monday, sold 4 and 4 left. He also mentioned it is free upgrade to Win 7.
The screen is too glossy for me otherwise I would have bought it.

Good deal for those who want a large desktop-replacement laptop.
The similar-spec 14in Gateway was a better choice for me though.

Do you have a link to this Gateway model?

There are one or two threads about it - in Expired Deals now though. It mostly sold out in the first day or two. FS have the same machine (diff colour/code) for $550 I believe.

this looks like a smokin' deal to me!
i've been waiting for a decent 17" to come up.
I have no qualms with Acer, fiance has a 14" acer, it's been just fine.
I'm assuming this Doesn't have dedicated Graphics.
but for what i would need it for, seems good.

No dedicated graphics but it is more than enough if you watch movies

If it's like the Gateway and has a HDMI port you can hook up to a big screen TV for movie watching. No need for a bulky 17in screen then.
If you're prepared to travel with a 17in laptop though, then this one should be fine.

A review said this laptop is not too bulky and heavy and pretty well manageable to go places with the backpack. It is ideal for university/college students for sub $500 laptop. I bet this thing will sell fast. If you are in the market for one, act fast.

I bought this one today instead of Acer deal due to 2 reasons :
1- better processor
2- HP
I know its a refurb but i think its still a better deal.

Not bad. The big question is: faster processor, 90 day warranty, refurb vs fast processor, 1 year warranty, $50 cheaper.

It's possible I guess. The more "widescreen" LCDs go, the smaller they actually are, for a given diagonal size. The smaller the screen area, the smaller (and lighter) the laptop. It should be a lot lighter than a 4:3 17in laptop of a few years ago. But the screen height will be more comparable to an old 4:3 15in screen, on an even lighter laptop.

Yea thats true but in my experience , if its gonna last for first 3 months , it may work for next 9 months .

That's usually the case. But it is a consideration. Esp for an expensive-to-repair laptop. FWIW, I'd have no great problem with a refurb desktop.

Computer prices dropped a lot recently. I paid ~$650 including taxes after 4 x $20 coupons from Staples back in Sept. I think this is a very good deal.

A 7 pound laptop is not "ideal" for anyone to be carrying around.

My comment is based on the following review. I suppose the budget conscious students don't mind.

At 7.0 pounds, this system is on the lighter side for a desktop replacement, and only 0.4 pounds heavier than the 17-inch MacBook Pro. We hardly noticed the weight when carrying the 7735Z from room to room. We even had little trouble transporting it between the office and home on public transport with a good large-screen laptop bag.

Duo Core is 2 processors, instead on one. It's the current trend.
I haven't followed laptop prices, but it looks like OK deal.
What are people's thoughts? I'm thinking i'll wait until boxing day.

Bought one at Northland Calgary. Still one left at Deerfoot.
It seems ok. I think that it's good for someone that primarily uses it at a desk location. The screen is comparatively huge.
There is a free update to Windows 7 (already ordered).
The set-up and normal Windows updates took bloody forever. Now that it's up to date, it's running fine. Connects well to wireless, and streams video with no issues.
Well worth the $500 in the right application.
