I just picked up a Ryobi super kit with bonus impact driver last night for 139
(It included 2 18V batteries, Drill, circular saw, reciprocating saw, flashlight, AND impact driver, Yes it's nicad, but I thought I'd jump on this until i see something better I believe the kit number is p841)

anyways home depot has got there other tool special for spending over 149 bucks you get 25 bucks back. so I grabbed a ryobi 1/4sheet sander for 29.99 which makes that work out to be a 5 dollar palm sander..

Is this a good deal? *(I 'm just doing around the house/outside deck stuff)

Pretty good I'd think. Past sales for drill and light for $99 were crap. Renovator kits on sale for about $160 also crap. Only other tool I really like would be the jig saw.

Two years ago I got same plus radio, vacuum, and laminate trimmer for $150. Original sale was $190 but nobody wanted it :)
Never use the trimmer or vacuum, once or twice used the impact driver.

Cost effective tools but salesman did say "Ryobi's don't like contractors". Good tools if you baby them.

I bought a 10 piece kit plus 2 batteries 3-4 years ago, and I thought the same at first when I bought them. I also have a full set of ridgid tools, and I use the ryobi stuff whenever I have a situation where I may punish my tools. I've left them out in the rain, drilled through things I shouldn't have, dropped them down the stairs and they just keep on going. These are the best tools I've ever owned on a value basis.

Are they the best? No. Would they stand up to contractor work? No. But if you build the odd deck, roof or reno job, these are fantastic value.

Well I think it's a decent deal. Thanks OP. Just picked up a set and ironically the same sander as well. I was really interested in only the Drill and an Impact wrench but that price was good for the kit.

Only thing I am worried about is the strength of the impact gun. At 1200 in/lb it might not be enough for the car work I want to do.

Yea, I was / am only interested in the drill and driver as well, but have a friend who has the circ saw and he says it's pretty handy for small jobs.

I really wanted and should have jumped on a lith ion set like the Ridgid one that was on for 170 bucks this past feb.. but at that time my old craftsman drill was still working and I couldn't justify getting another one. that one lasted me 6 years. let's see how long this one will last.

As well, I am not sure that the impact is really 1200lb/in.. I think it may be the cheaper one at 850lb/in.. but i could be way wrong on that one.

I must agree with the other poster that these are one of the best values available in cordless tools. Ryobi have really found the sweet spot in terms of price/performance/durability/functionality. Are they the best tools? Absolutely not, but they do provide great value for money for the average user.

As the prev poster pointed out the circ saw is very handy to be able to pull out and trim the bottom of a door or to chuck in the back of the van to rip a sheet of plywood in the HD car park. The runtime is very low (a few 8ft rips) but it is functional and very very handy.

The impact gun is a glorified driver. Don't expect to do much vehicle work with it!

Finally, regardless of the tempting deals that the other manufacturers bring out replacement batteries are still a big expense. Ryobi is the only manufacturer that has addressed this by providing replacements at a sensible and realistic cost. Further they are the only manufacturer, that I am aware of, that provides an upgrade path to LiIon technology for existing NiCd tools. They are a great choice if you want tools that you don't have to throw away when the batteries die.

To make this deal a little better, I do believe the li-ion 18v batteries can be used for these.

Yeah the batteries supplied (NiCd) are olde tech, not much runtime. But they're pretty durable...I left the drill + battery under a leaky roof, got wet - dried it out for a few days, good as new!

Yes this is one of the best aspects of the ONE+ system, you can use EITHER type of battery in any tool.

I got the 10 pc set ( drill, circular saw, sawsall, jigsaw, angle drill, chainsaw, flashlight, sander, impact gun, dustbuster 3 years ago for $279 (http://tinyurl.com/ybk22yf), I have used every single tool many times.

These tools ROCK, they are very good for the price. The drill alone is worth $100 IMO - it runs circles around the Mastercraft one it replaced. All tools are VERY durable. The only one that is kind of useless is the circ. saw - don't count on this for any big jobs as it does not have a ton of power. I have used it many times though to cut thin sheets of plywood at times when I just had to make some small plunge cuts and didn't want to haul out the larger saw.

I've got the Ryobi 18V tools and love them. Solid and great value for the money. Especially at $139 with TWO batteries.

I agree with the other posters. Ryobi is good value for the money, especially when you get them on sale. Perfect for the DIYer. The batteries aren't the greatest, when they have a deal I get a new drill to get extra the batteries.

On the other hand when I can score a deal on Rigid tools I'd take them. Especially with their lifetime guarantee on the batteries.

I have both a Rigid and Ryobi 18volt impact driver. The ryobi has more power than the rigid. I read somewhere the battery on the ryobi has slightly higher mhv rating on the battery.

Not a bad deal.. HD had the a Ryobi one+ 4pc set - drill/circ saw/recip saw/flashlight and 2 batteries during their anniversary sale for $99.

So this is an additional impact for $40.

If i didn't already have too many tools (all underused) i'd go get this too. One of these days, those projects will all get done. :cheesygri

I bought one of the Kits a long while back and it's been probably one of my best purchases ever, value-wise and situational-wise. For the average home-owner it's a great idea to have something like this. I'd be tempted to pick up a set if it really gets cheap for the batteries alone.

If the set were the L-ion batteries, I would. I am stillw aiting for a deal on the L-ion batteries, they are just too much $$$ for me to upgrade right now.

I'm not so inclined to get the li-ions because I have the ni-cad charger that came with the old set ... it's a "dumb" charger and is not compatible iirc with the li-ions.

To use the li-ions you must use the supplied charger either in the battery set or that comes supplied with the combo. The li-ion charger can also do the ni-cads ... not the other way around unfortunately.

So, i'm waiting for a smokin' deal on the li-ions ... or a combo set before picking them up. The weight savings is nice ... but i'm not too worried about that. Not sure if there is a increase/decrease/same of amp hour capacity, voltage is the same so no big deal. The li-ion probably has a better discharge curve and maintains the voltage levels better resulting in probable better performance before dying off.
