I've got a really old Nokia pre-paid phone (Nokia 6015, released back in 2004!) with Virgin Mobile but I'd like to upgrade to a bluetooth phone because my car has it. I don't use it much, 100$ / year is usually good enough for me. My account currently has 25$ in it and it expires tomorrow... so I figure that I could make use of the 50$ activation credit and get a new account instead. I don't want to spend much $$ because I don't use it much..
I looked at the samsung link and thought that it could be ok because I could have email access / minimal browser access while on vacation with the family since I could simply add the email add-on when needed.. but then again, the phone is bigger because of the qwerty keyboard which I won't use much.
Otherwise there's the M300 / M320 but reviews on those are terrible..
I looked at the 7/11 deals but they'll be closing shop in Ottawa so I can't get those.
any thoughts?

Since you don't use a whole lot of minutes, 7/11 is good but piggy backing off Rogers network. You can think about Rogers paygo, they have a $100 for 365 days expiration period.

Nokia 5130 is good, since you have a Nokia now, the learning curve should be fairly flat.

we're talking about a cellphone here.. not a rocket I'm pretty sure I can handle it
Thanks for the tip about rogers, I'll take a look.
edit: I took a look at rogers.. 40c vs 30c / minute and you have to pay incoming texts and 911.. (incoming texts with vmobile are neat.. just email <phone number>@vmobile.ca and you receive the text on your phone..)

Petro Canada Mobile (on the Rogers network) is offering some good deals on Nokia phones.

I would keep your focus on Nokia simply because they make the best (non-smart) phones.
On the other hand, I've also had very good experiences with Virgin Mobile (in spite of them not having any Nokia's).
I like Virgin's Blackberry and LG phones like the Rumor2 and the Muziq. I'm not as keen on their Samsung phones.
I once suggested that someone buy a Samsung m300. That person didn't think they would ever care about loading an app, but then one day they did want to run something and discovered that nothing works on the m300. You would never have that problem with a Nokia. If you must get a Samsung, the m320 is better then the m300.

I know cellphone isn't a rocket, but I have been a long time nokia user before. Nokia has its reasons to have the largest dumbphone market share globally. They have the best user interface and generally stellar battery life and reception.
That 40 cents/min is the anytime plan. If you choose all day plan, it is 25 cents for 1st 5mins, then 15cents for the rest. You can dump in $100, this rate will be good for 365 days. Of course, 911 and incoming text is the con. My mom is using rogers paygo, she said is great and cheap.
