View Full Version : What is that bright star in the sky?

It's 6:19 AM EST and looking out of my window on the 18th floor I see a bright star to the right of the CN Tower. My location is near Dufferin and Bloor. It has been shining since 4 AM but since the sun is rising and its dawn you can REALLY see it now.

If you happen to read this hours after my post and the star is no longer visible you can see it again tomorrow night at the same spot I mentioned from 4 AM but I recommend seeing it at 6 AM which would be the best time.

I've noticed this for months now and it keep getting brighter every time. During the night its clearly the most obvious star in the night sky and it eventually becomes the only one you can see easily without 'trying' to find the other stars.

6:22 now and its still shining bright. Any input? I heard this could be Venus, but Venus supposedly doesn't twinkle in the night sky. This star is clearly twinkling in the sky.

Your input please.

Also, this is the EASTERN sky. I was looking towards the CN tower from Dufferin St.

And if you're wondering why the times of the post seem off its because the first thread happened to disappear somehow.

All the planets that you can see twinkle like stars (red Mars included). The twinkling effect is not caused by the fireballs and flares of stars, as they are too far for us to see them. The twinkling effect is caused by our atmosphere. If you were in space, none of the stars would twinkle.

To answer your question, I believe you are talking about Venus. I believe I see the star you are talking about early in the evening and late at night. It is a planet, as it "wanders" through the night sky. I'm not located where you are, so I can't confirm that it appears at the CN tower at around 4:00 am, but I think it is the same "star" I see.

You are probably seeing the planet Venus, in the morning sky.

Most likely Venus, aka the "morning star".

Living in the GTA, I have never gotten to see the night sky as it truly is. Even all the times I've gone camping, there's either been clouds or a full moon. I went camping in the Sahara Desert a few weeks ago during a new moon and finally got to see the night sky filled with thousands of stars, planets, shooting stars, and even the Milky Way. Just phenomenal and awe-inspiring.

With a Dealextreme flashlight no less.

it is one of those shaking charge flashlights, that is why the OP saw the twinkling.

Yep, it's Venus. This question gets asked a lot and I'm always surpised when people just notice it. Every year it's very visible for a few months in a row.

It's a little star, right? Ok I googled it for you, and apparently it's name is "Twinkle, Twinkle". You're welcome.

I agree, venus is the "morning star" although its a planet, the shine comes from the brightest star in our sky, our sun, reflecting off the planet

You won't see satellites in the GTA, but if you are lucky enough to get far enough away from the light pollution of the city, you could see satellites among the stars. However, satellites move at a moderate pace through the sky - they are also generally quite dim. They are slower than a "shooting star". That makes it pretty hard to confuse the two.

if OP has an Android phone device then download Google Sky Map and never again be left wondering what you're staring at in the sky.

I assume the iPhone has a similar app but I don't have one so I can't say for sure that it does.

It does, I use it all the time.

The app is simply called Planets v1.4 (currently)
