A friend of mine upgraded to Windows 7 without checking if she's got the drivers for it...now she can't get her network adapter or audio to work. She's got an LG laptop and I checked the official site. There isn't any Windows 7 drivers for her laptop.

What can she do? Short of downgrading back to XP?

Checked for generic drivers? What are the peripherals?

Laptops with preloaded O/S don't often take into consideration of the user upgrading the operating system down the line later on. You might have a hard time finding the drivers from the laptop's manufacturer's website.

What you can do is figure out what kind of hardware is on the laptop, then go to the hardware's manufacturer's website themselves and look for the drivers.

LG do not make their own laptop parts, they gather parts from other vendors and assemble it themselves.

This may be a lengthy process but reinstall the O/S that came with the laptop, find out the make and model of the components whose drivers you're looking for, download it (Win7 drivers from the component's manufacturer's website) - burn it to a CD/DVD or copy to a USB drive and then do the Win7 install all over again.

Borrow a friend's USB/Ethernet (USB/WiFi) adapter, connect it to the laptop, install software as necessary, and then connect the laptop to the internet.

Start "Windows Update" and let it take care of the rest. It will most certainly find the necessary drivers.

i had to go through a similar situation with a vaio laptop. LG won't provide you with win7 drivers. the vista or xp drivers might work, but most likely they won't. also, sometimes windows update can't find the right driver.

go to the LG website, find out the model name for the network card, and google it along with "windows 7 driver". download the driver to a usb stick/sd card and install on the lg lappy.

Vista drivers should work, but XP is extremely unlikely.

Another option is to borrow a USB Ethernet or USB wireless adopter from a friend. You need to somehow get to the Windows update, hopefully there is driver there for the LG.

Vista drivers will work 90% of the time, as long as the drivers don't check whether your on windows 7 or Vista.

Worst case can get Vista drivers, unpack them and point Windows at the inf files.

Thanks everyone!

I took the approach of one of the posters and found the manufacturers and their drivers. I can now see all available networks but I'm having trouble connecting to their wireless network. I created a Windows 7 wireless network profile along with the security key and encryption type. Is there a way to trigger a connect to that profile? I can't find a "Connect" button.

The only place I see a connect is where it lists all available networks. Then it would ask me for the security key (which I would expect it to get from the profile instead of asking me again...). It failed to connect instantaneously, which leads me to believe it's not even trying. Does anyone have any experience with Windows 7 wireless networking?

Thats strange. I bought win7 home for my gf's computer that is 2 yrs old and everything went smoothly. Networks were found, internet was found and all drivers.

I guess lookup the specs of the laptop online and find the drivers that way:confused:

I think it's not a driver issue? or else I wouldn't see all the networks in the area?
