A guy at a tire store suggested I need to purchase lug nuts for my steel rims having winter tires on them, since the lug nuts i have now are made for aluminum rims and if i use these same nuts, the rims would'nt tighten well.
Is this true ?
I thought all lug nuts are the same material other than being lockable, chromed or shaped differnetly

May be a sales tactic as I've used he same lugs for multiple sets of wheels. However it may be true depending on the wheel. So...i'm offering you a comment more than an answer. Sorry.

The lug seat angle of your factory rims may or may not be different than the seat angle of the steel rims.

The seat angles need to match to ensure that the lug is flush with the rim when tightened. If not the lug will not make full contact with the rim and could loosen.

Just pull one lug off your vehicle and check it on the steel rim that is going to be used.

I have different lug nut types for my stock wheels and my winter wheels.

The winter wheels needs a smaller diameter lug nut (Tuner lug).

Hope this chart hepls.

+1. The seat of the lug nut absolutely must match the wheel bolt hole design. The OP's OEM lug nuts will still go on the bolts and fasten the winter wheels but if they don't seat properly, the wheels won't stay centered and too much force will be put on the bolts and nuts - you then run the risk of the nuts loosening and the bolts deforming or snapping. This could prove to be more than inconvenient.

If you buy OEM wheels for your winter tires (as I do), then you can have just one set of lugnuts - all bets are off when you buy aftermarket rims. Still, they sometimes do match - obviously, the OP needs to check it out.
