View Full Version : New Receptionist Might Be Stealing My Tip Money
Sazafraz

The hair salon that I work at every Saturday got a new receptionist about a month ago. Ever since she started working there I hardly make any money in tips unless the client gives it to me personally. What happens is that if the client sees me before they leave, they give the tip to me personally but if I am not around (which is usually the case) they give the money to the receptionist and tells her to give it to me when she sees me. However, ever since she started working here I have made little to no tips except for a couple clients who gave it to me in person.
I don't want to jump to conclusions, maybe it's just a coincidence so how can I find out if she is stealing?

Get a friend to give a tip, see if you receive it.

May be she thinks it's hers to keep? Could be a simple misunderstanding. You're weren't there to witness the gifting so what is said between the client and the receptionist is only speculation, right? Either way, the confrontation would be awkward as hell.

That totally sucks, you should ask a friend to give you a tip through the receptionist and see whether it gets to you..

it's pretty easy to find out if she is stealing from you.
here's how:
1. eat lots and lots of garlic
2. ask her if she is stealing from you
3. if she says no, continuously breathe out while you talk saying "did u steal from me" making sure a steady stream of garlic breath goes into her face until she confesses.
4. if she still says no then murder her and steal her wallet.
then you guys will be even.

Dude, that's stupid. Why eat garlic? You could do it without garlic.

LOL, eating so much garlic might prevent clients from coming to you

the salon that I go to has a pretty good set up.
There are slots within the top of the front desk (literally right in the desk) which underneath have boxes to hold tips. Each stylist's name is labeled on top of the slot and when people are leaving, they can just drop their tips into the slots.
This way, each stylist gets their tips and clients don't need to walk to the stylist to give in person. People that wash hair also have a slot/box.
Maybe get your salon to implement this.

I know it is a little off-topic but are the tips supposed to go into a pool and then be divided out evenly? Some resturants do this and was just curious. Or are the tips given to you (and the receptionist) supposed to be only for you?
I suspect the latter as it should be but just curious.
Try asking around to see if others are noticing the same thing?

No, we're talking about working in a salon here.. it's different cuz everyone has different clients and it wouldn't be fair to share your tips if you have the most clients. Plus, I believe in many Salons stylist are graded in Junior, Senior and Master stylist which charges for different amounts based on that therefore the size amount of tipping would vary alot.
I like what someone said above about getting a friend to tip you from the receptionist but I would take it a bit futher and have the bill specially marked so just incase the argument arises and she is willing to show her wallet. Everyone has money in their wallet but if it has your name on it then you win.

get a friend to leave a tip, like three $5's.. but with a dye pack in between them.
Then you'll know if she's keeping it or not when it explodes in her face.

now that I think of it...i've always gave my tip to the front receptionist after my haircut, and they always say thanks, making me think they're the ones pocketing it.
Pretty easy for the receptionist to just pocket tips if they're dishonest. There's no way they could misunderstand that the tip isn't for them. Do they really think that punching a couple numbers deserves a tip?

Thanks for the response. I was just curious, as I do not believe that would be fair way of doing it (the way, I posted earlier). The way it is done at your salon is more appropriate.
Anyway, I would ask others at the salon if they have noticed the same issue than try and have a marked bill that you get a friend to tip with and see what happens. Prehaps she gets lucky and gives you that marked bill but keeps some other tips of yours.. lol.

Get a friend to give a tip, see if you receive it.
This would be kind of difficult to do. The salon is pretty far (different city) so asking a friend to come and get a haircut or w/e is inconvenient for them. The receptionist might figure out that were friends so she would probably give me the tip. The salon I work at consists mostly of upper class people, so our prices are pretty high in comparison to other places so I don't think a friend would want to pay so much money just to see if I get $5 from them lol.
I was talking to a stylist on how lately I haven't been getting any tips from clients for awhile and she said she feels the same way and said she feels kind of suspicious as well.

You got to have a casual acquaintance or two? ask to go halfers or give them a deal and explain what you are testing?
Though I don't understand why you don't just get your manager involved....this is his job to address...not yours....

Ask one of the customers who gives you a tip personally, to instead give it to the receptionist.
Can you post pics of the receptionist and also of yourself, it would help greatly in my analysis.

Going to the manager without proof would probably make you look like an idiot... especially if the suspect denies, and you have nothing to refute with. Get some proof, then go to the manager.

You can offer a friend a free or discounted cut (as in you pay him/her back afterwards) to test it out.

how about you simply ask her? just dont go off accusing her of it.. say something along the lines of wondering if any tips were left for you. sure she could say no, but most people are terrible liars, and if she suspects you're on to her(if she is stealing your tips that is) she may stop. after all it could just be a misunderstanding like other posts have mentioned.
i dont see the need to have some sort of scheme or be sneaky about it. be forward.

I'm for the testing with a friend.
Or do it another way.
Sign a bill of one of your customers and then tell them to give it to the receptionist. Then when you get your tips if the signed bill isn't there, you can accuse her of it with other people watching.
Don't sign it with anything that'll make it seem suspicious of course.

People will steal if no one is looking. What can you do about it? Frisk her? What if she steals every other day instead of every day? I'd ask your customers to leave your tip with you. There has to be checks and balances, and if your salon isn't putting cameras, etc. up, there could be more stuff going missing besides tips in the future.
Or, maybe you are getting hardly any tips because there's a recession?

If she's new are you sure she even knows she's supposed to give the tips to you? Ask the manager if she was clearly told what to do with tips. She may just think they're her tips (why she'd think that, I don't know but there's no end to stupid)

If you work at a high end salon, wouldn't you have a lot of repeat clients that would usually tip you? Wouldn't that tip you off? Also, most people tip after anything at a salon anyways, so shouldn't it be pretty easy to tell if she's taking your tips?
