I have a huge patch of dead grass on my front lawn. Basically
it is 50-60% of my lawn.
I know it is dead not because the grass is yellow, but when I kick at it,
the grass is not connected to any roots and just sloughs off.
I live in Vaughan.
I'm not alone as I see a lot of these dead patches on lawns on my street.

I had grubs but never saw beetles this spring. Tonnes of crane flies
in the fall and tonnes of moths in the grass all summer.
The dead grass happened in September.

Some neighbours have raked up their dead grass and put down soil
and seed. I procrastinated and it is probably too late in the year for seed
so I'll do it in the spring.

Anyone else had this?

If you see tonnes of crane flies I suspect crane fly larvae (aka Leather Jackets) is feeding on your lawn roots. This could be the reason why your lawn is yellow.
