Hey,
I'm looking to buy a cheap sofa for the basement. Nothing too fancy since the lights are off most of the time (home theater).
Price point is <$400. Both have couches at the price range but who would have the better quality? I'm not expecting much but I don't want garbage either.
Thoughts?

I went to both looking for a sofa. Ikea seems overpriced for the quality. If you're willing to go with a demo since the lights are off anyway, you can get a really good price on a couch at The Brick.

The Brick has more selection but The Brick = horror stories. I'll drop by one this weekend and see what happens. Thanks for the help.

I had some horrible service at The Brick. Despite almost no service at Ikea, things were better there for me there and I decided to pick up two couches for approx 500 from there.

Ya that's what I'm worried about, getting the couch home and finding something wrong with it and them not delivering it when they say they are (I work 9-5 during the week).
Looks like Ikea is a safe bet service wise but Brick could lead to a deal.

Just curious, but does service really matter that much when you're purchasing a sofa? I mean, you buy it, have it delivered, then after that, there's not much service required is there?

Its the delivery part that gets complicated lol

I just had a good experience at the new Leon's Round house, got it cheaper than Ikea and much nicer quality. Also deliver was free, there is a minimum order for that i think, but it's not high.
I was surprised by how good the experience was I went there with serious reservations.
Not sure about other locations.
Brick gave me some bad experiences before.

Thanks but I'm in Ottawa. Looking on their site, they don't have anything in the <$400 range.

Brick has some pretty good deals during their tent sales. Getting the sofa itself however is sometimes a headache lol. They also have a bunch of pissed off men going through mid-life crisis trying to put on a smile to sell you anything they can. I'm personally an IKEA fan, but their sofa styles aren't for everyone (myself included) and some styles are certainly overpriced.

I don't believe IKEA haggles on price (but correct me if I'm wrong).
With the Brick if you see something you like you can negotiate a better price. This, however, can be draining. I spent an entire Saturday afternoon once negotiating on a "leatherette" sofa and armchair set. It was pretty mentally exhausting. But I got a good deal on a super comfy set. :cheesygri
That being said, I've had my share of Brick horror stories and I generally try to avoid buying things from them as a result.
I'm planning a theater room in my basement too, and I'm looking at IKEA Karlstad corner sofa unit. (At the IKEA Ottawa store, there's a room very close to the entrance/ballroom, with blue wall paint and a white sectional corner sofa. There's panel curtains in the back. That's pretty much exactly what I want. :) ) This sofa seems a bit expensive, but it's pretty comfy.

Do you have a Bay Outlet or Sears Outlet nearby? Sometimes you can get good deals on furniture odds & ends.

Yeah the Brick has many many horror service stories. I'd go with Ikea they have a great return policy and I'd trust them way more.

can you guys share some of your brick horror stories? I'll be looking for a new sofa soon, and price is very important to me, so if I can get a sofa for $2-300 less than Ikea, and just rent a moving van for a day at $150 or so and not have to deal with delivery from the Brick, then that'll still be worth it.
I can't imagine anything to do with service at a furniture store other than delivery, that's all...

Nope, I wish.
I'll keep Ikea as a backup and see what I can get done at le brick. If I could get free, guaranteed delivery on a better couch, I'll bite.
I'll keep you guys posted.
BTW, most of the horror stories have to do with the delivery and returns being a huge pain.

Yep, if you know exactly what you want, and they have it, then you can haggle a good price and you've come out ahead of the game. But if you have problems with it, or if you let them sell you something that's not what you really wanted, that's when you start to regret it. Also in my experience the customer service people are rude.
I won't repost my story here, do a search on posts by me. Basically I bought a TV that they misrepresented, and when I tried to exchange it, they treated me almost like a criminal (they had to find a salesperson who could vouch for the fact that I was, indeed, in the store buying the TV the other night) and basically told me that once this exchange was done, this sale was final. And after THAT, the new TV was missing pieces, and I had to fight to get something done about that.
