Does anyone here have a recommendation for a calling card that I can use in Europe for calling home (Canada)? Or do I just buy one from a store while I am there?

This is usually better. The rates will be normally be much cheaper if you buy them in Europe.
The only problem being that if you are travelling to many countries, you may have to buy quite a few. Sometimes you can find one which works from more than one country, however many of them are only good in the country they were bought in.

Best bet is to go to an internet cafe and use Skype... 2 cents a minute from any euro country to Canada.

Goldline cards have access numbers in Europe.
You could also get any card here with toll free access number then use sipbroker access numbers to call that toll free number from Europe.
Also take a look at dialnow.

Good idea. My problem is that I am working and so I don't get a chance to go out to an internet cafe. I would use my laptop for that but I have to use the company laptop and they restrict everything so I can't install skype on the computer.

I will be in the Netherlands and Austria.

Thanks, I will look into them. I will probably just buy something while I am there. It is starting to look like the easiest option.

Dialnow has local rate access number in both The Netherlands and Austria. Calls to Canada will be free subject to fair use policy (300min/week free).

Pre-paid sims can be alternative options.
For Austria:
4 cts / min http://www.youtalk.at/deutsch/tarife.html
2 cts / min http://www.vectonemobile.at/tariffs/international_rates.aspx
Netherlands:
15 cts / min http://www.lebara-mobile.nl/prepaid/rates/
Though, I always get connections with Lebara.
Have fun!

Thanks for the replies everyone. Wish I was just going on these trips for relaxation but usually all I do is work very long hours and look forward to getting home. That is why I just need to make sure I know an easy way to be able to call home. You all provided me with great options.
Now I just need to go and buy and adapter to plug in my computer...

I got a magic jack and plug it into my laptop. make sure you bring a small hand held phone receiver with a cord.. You can call Canada and the US unlimited. Make sure your hotel has wireless or internet cafe has wifi
I was in dublin and called home from my hotel. It was awesome.. no more phone cards...It cost about $19.99 you can order one via internet from Canada.
It is the best that there is......

You can still use skype on a locked down work laptop most of the time. Follow the instructions below and put the skype.exe + skype.bat on a memory key or a media card. It will run without being installed.

Should work fine. DON'T connect to your corp. VPN as it will likely block skype from making calls.
It's pretty simple, install it on another non locked down machine. Copy the exe and make a small .bat file in notepad.
Now copy the Skype.exe file to a new folder called 'Skype Portable' in your USB flash drive. Create another folder in this folder called 'Data'. Create a new notepad file inside 'Skype Portable' and name it 'skype.bat'. Paste 'skype.exe /datapath:"Data" /removable' into the notepad.
When you are done, please make sure that you have a folder 'Skype Portable' in your USB flash drive with Skype.exe, an empty folder called 'Data' and a notepad file named 'skype.bat'. Double clicking skype.bat will run Skype
FYI Skype is like $2.99 a month for north american calling.
