Does anyone have any advice or tips? I got a blackberry pearl in April 2008(hate the phone and the network) and want to upgrade to a new bold 9700 but no one can do anything for me. I already tried retention once and got denied, I'm thinking of calling again with the intention of canceling unless they give me a new phone. What am I looking at if I cancel with bell, 20 bucks a month for 15 months? I don't get why they would introduce a new network and phones with no way for current customers to upgrade to them, don't they want people off their crappy old network?

So if thats what they told you, what exactly are you wanting us to say? Ok, cancel your contract and dont pay the penalties. Im sure they wont mind.

I believe that is correct. Its $20 a month for the remainder of the contract.

I dont see why they should. Services change. You didnt have to sign up for a contract but you did (so you could get your phone cheaper). You could have paid for the phone and had no contract. But you didnt. If you buy a car and then are not happy with it, should the dealer automatically take the car back because you want them to? You got your current phone, I would assume, rather cheap and agreed to the contract. Suck it up until its over or cancel and pay the fee.

Thanks for all your helpful input. I'm not looking to cancel my contract per-se, I want to extend it and get a better phone. This is something that I have heard of people doing and was just looking for some advice. The bell person said I probably would have been able to do this 2 months ago, but their policies just changed. If you can't say something constructive why don't you just butt out, and not be a dick.

I thought he was providing constructive feedback.... but to each his own.
If you want to get a new phone call retentions and tell them you want a new phone. If they say no then cancel ($400 charge) and go buy a phone from Rogers/Telus.

Shouldn't the change would have been a breach of contract? When you were signing your contract, that term wasn't there and it was subsequently added.
You should really have the rep get to the bottom of it and eventually render the contract invalid.

Yeah that is what I am probably going to do. It sucks because I would be happy to stay with bell, I just want on the new network. It just seems to me that they would want to encourage people to get rid of their old CDMA devices so they can stop supporting it and focus on the new architecture.

The CDMA/1xRTT/EVDO RevA network is equivalent, so Bell has no inventive to get people to side-grade to the HSPA/HSPA+ network.

The upgrade policy is not stated in the contract, so they can do whatever they want to it.

Ok. Im very sorry.
Call them back and tell them that someone on RFD says "yes, I can cancel your contract with no penalty, get another 3 year contract and ANOTHER brand new phone for free, just because Im not happy with the contract that I originally signed on for. I refuse to take responsibility for my own actions and want Bell to fix it and take care of it for me. Please and thank you."
I should have said that in the first place.

Or you should have said nothing, because you have nothing useful to add here. About the networks, I still receive no coverage in my office, but my coworkers who have tour's are able to receive calls now. I can and am taking responsibility for the contract I signed, I never said anywhere that I wanted a brand new phone for free. I wanted to extend my contract to get some sort of hardware credit towards a new device, don't put words into my mouth. Why are you so aggressive in defending bell? They are a major corporation who are making an butt load of money off of me and my phone contract, I just want a better phone(pearl's have huge software problems that don't occur until the device is about a year old. I'm on my second and it is starting to go too) and service that I will be happy with. I've decided to stick with my current phone, it sucks but I can't really afford to throw 500+ to get a better phone. Also, this was my first cell phone and I was a little ignorant when signing up, I got locked into a bad contract and I've learned my lesson now. I don't really know why I have to defend myself when I was just asking for a little help from the community, another lesson learned I guess.
