I was reviewing my statement last month & saw two charges from Esso stations in Quebec totaling about $100. As an Ontario resident who hasn't been to Quebec since.. probably the late 90's, I called CIBC to have them investigate. They claimed these were swiped transactions by my secondary card (my boyfriend's VS) -- but neither of us were anywhere near Quebec.
Today I received my answer from CIBC, basically saying due to the fact that these were swiped transactions, they can't help me & I should follow up with the merchant. I feel like this isn't good enough. It'd be one thing if it were $5, but $100 is a fairly nominal amount of fraudulent charges. What can I do from here? I thought charges of XX dollars required a signature.. where does this come in? Show me my signature, CIBC! ...

Swipes at the pump never require a signature.
Do you gas up at Esso? Maybe they're legitimate charges and the Quebec address is the mistake. It's happened to me before where I shop at a store in location X and their out of province head office address shows up on the statement, making me think fraud.
Also, does your boyfriend have an alibi for the dates in question? j/k :)

My CIBC card was compromised a couple of months ago and I had a bunch of "swiped" charges from Quebec (particularly in St. Leonard) for gas, hotels and movies. Total was close to $2,000 and they had no problem taking the charges off my card.

You should ask CIBC to check their records to see if there were any other charges to your account from Toronto within a few minutes of the Quebec transactions. This may convince CIBC that, despite advances in high-speed travel, you could not be in Quebec one minute and in Toronto five minutes later.
