I'm looking to buy a used luxury car with less than 50km on it for around $40,000 . I want something that's going to be All Wheel drive, European, comfortable. Sedan or SUV
I am considering these cars : Audi A6 , BMW 530xi , MB ML350, BMW X5 , AUDI Q7
Any suggestions?
please don't suggest Hyundai , Toyota , Lexus ........ ;)
Thanks,

You want a sedan, a crossover, or a SUV? With your budget, I say you might be able to afford a new luxury car, depending on model.

If you're looking for a sedan, I very much liked my '09 CTS-4 (meets all of your criteria) but I think biggest bang for the buck in the near-luxury sedan market is the Infiniti G37x.

what do you guys think of 5 series ?

Drove the 535 before. It's nice but not really sporty compared to the other smaller sport sedans. However, it's definitely more spacious and comfortable. The iDrive sucks though.

OP said european.
that leaves only BMW, MB and Audi.
I like the new A4 and new C class.
But for lightly used, I'd have to go with BMW 3-series or 5-series.

i just saw bang for the buck and luxury and instantly thought of the genesis.. granted it's neither AWD nor european, but maybe worth having a look

The small mass market cars don't depreciate very much so they are bad value for money. For good value you need to buy a S-class or 7-Series. For $40k you could buy 2 x 5 year old S-classes, and drive one while the other one is in the shop. And when friends come over you could park them both side by side on the driveway.

And I guess you have to narrow it down - sedan or SUV?
Pick one.
If you go with sedans - why E- and S-class with 4MATIC are not on the list?
If you go with SUV - where's X5?
And if Audi is considered, then why ther's no VW and Porsche?

Especially the 2010! They've made some nice improvements, especially to the suspension I hear.
Honestly, other than people who a) know cars, and b) have a pathological hatred of anything Korean, the car seems to do very well at impressing people. And for $45K if you buy it, or like $750/month all-in, zero down, MSRP if you lease it (they're still doing decent leasing, and honestly, do you have any idea what the thing will be worth in four years? so why not lease?), you get
- 290HP engine, 6 speed auto
- trizone climate control
- biiiig huge amount of leg room in the rear
- adaptive Xenon headlights
- 17 speaker Lexicon sound system
- radar cruise control (on the 2010)
- heated front seats, cooled driver's seat
- keyless start
- rain sensing wipers
- all the 'standard' safety features
- Bluetooth
- power rear sunshade
and what else?
Downfalls:
a) the brand's reputation
b) reliability seems to be on par with a European brand, i.e. not spectacular on the electronics
c) no AWD, though good snow tires should be fine if you drive reasonably carefully in winter
d) we get screwed in Canada and don't get the leather dash with the V6
e) horribly uncertain resale value, so really should be leased (especially when you consider that the residual is 10% higher than on an Audi...)
f) the voice recognition pisses me off
and that's about it?

I have no probs with the Genesis' engineering, comfort, or performance but I just wish that Hyundai had come up with their own exterior styling rather than cribbing so liberally from the German marques. IMO, that begets the accusation that Genesis owners would have liked an MB or Bimmer but were too frugal to spring for one. Frugality, on its own, is a positive characterstic for people but being associated with cheapness doesn't do much for the image of luxury goods.
YMMV

strangely enough, the engineering is from Mitsubishi.
I mean, look at the genesis 2.0T engine. It's basically has the same DNA as the engine from the Evo with the turbo tuned at lower pressure. I read an article that interviewed one of the Hyundai engineers. Do I believe it? I don't think so.

If you can stretch a bit a CLS would be a really nice choice, send me a PM if there's anything I can help you out with.

But you could say the same about Lexus' styling, at least in their first decade...
The thing is, creative styling is a huge risk. Look at the Cadillac CTS/STS (the Sigma-based ones). Some people like it, but for MANY people it's way too bold and in-your-face a design. And GM's attempt to be bold with the interior of the first-gen CTS was a HUGE disaster - yes, the thing was unique... but also uniquely hideous.
Hyundai decided instead to stick to 'traditional' luxury car styling cues. If you ask me, the thing imitates an Infiniti M/Q more than anything German...

Careful, and on two fronts at that. First off the Genesis lux sedan and the Genesis Coupe are very different cars. Though the basic platform is the same, the two cars become very different products and the 2.0T you speak of is not available in the lux sedan.
Second of all that 2.0T engine you are referring to is a GEMA engine. The "DNA" is not exactly the same (if engines had DNA, lol). The GEMA engines are used by three major manufacturers--Hyundai, Chrysler, and Mitsubishi. The basic block design is the same (and this was engineered by Hyundai mind you, not Mitsu) but thereafter for each specific make the designs diverge significantly. The engine in the Genesis Coupe 2.0T you could not call the same as the engine in the Lancer Ralliart or Evo.

No kidding. The guy is willing to buy a ML350 and you're suggesting a Hyundai?
What would he do with the $15k he's saved up for repairs? Set it on fire?

What does "best bang for the buck" mean to you?
You can get a new Mercedes C250 4Matic for $35k + tax. That get you a luxury euro car with AWD plus its new.
I personally wouldn't buy a used euro car without a warranty, as any value you gain on the price is lost on repairs.

Sorry, we should have suggested he stick with Civic and Corolla. THAT would have been the TRUE RFD Way (TM). :)

Who needs support in buying 5-series? That's probably the best luxury sport sedan if you can afford to buy and to maintain it.

.................
There is no way that a sedan and convertible "share" the same platform. A convertible platform is considerably different from the sedan in strength, rigidity and stiffness alone but other things too. They "share" the same name.

Fun car, but you already know that. Smart move to buy it out. You know the car and the owner and are pretty sure that it has been taken care of just like you would ;)

i know its still too new and in the 55-60k range now, perhaps in 2 years itll be around 40-45k used but after doing some research, the best combo of:
-interior luxury
-exterior looks
-range of engines (2L,3.2L,4.2? L)
-sportiness
-AWD
Audi A5
Check to see whats your poison but a cheaper A5 (i mean "cheaper") with a S5 trim looks great and supposedly feels great as well.
i believe 60 grand is fully loaded? not sure...im sure it can go upwards of 70 grand. thats new though.
if i had your 40k, id shoot for a new A5 and go with payments for the rest 20k ish (over 24 or 48 months) and get a nice mid engine with a fully loaded car.
i like a few BMWs as well (specifically 335 line) but the interior lacks, the 3 series ALL has the same looks unless you really know your cars or pay specific attention to the stop lights. Also add to that you see more 3 series BMWs than honda civics (lately)...much like MB's new C-class...new audi's seem a bit more rare. Specfically the new A5.
My 2c. i used to like Infiniti's G line but the 37 looks very awkward from the back (stop lights specifically) and looks too bubbly.
