HI, I m in toronto and want to shop clothes, cosmetics and shoes. I have heard that there are some outlet malls in USA which are near buffalo/niagara border and gives good bargain shopping. I have grove city mall, PA or Waterloo malls in NY in mind for shopping. Can someone please share shopping experience in this forum? :)

also any advise on border restriction while bringing merchandise from USA to Canada?

The Niagara Fashion Outlets (http://www.fashionoutletsniagara.com) is a pretty good outlet mall, it has some of the best selection of stores as well as some stores that are not at Grove or Waterloo (Hugo Boss, Burberry, Michael Kors, DKNY, Saks off 5th etc.) Plus, why drive the extra 2-4 hours for less stores???

The stores at Niagara have quickly realized that the Toronto/Golden Horseshoe (8million population+) market is their primary market and source of customers, thus have greately increased their inventories and selection to meet the market demands. The Waterloo Mall caters to Syracuse/Rochester (smaller markets) and the Grove Mall caters to Pittsburgh (smaller market than Toronto)

I guess they shouldn't steal your parade either

(I liked GC. But if you haven't been to Fashion Outlets a thousand times before, then it is the better trip. Plus it has a Kmart, Walmart, and Target not too far away. And Marshall's is sometimes a great place to shop!)

To add to that, a brand new Super-Walmart just opened this past summer right next to Fashion Outlets, and it's impressive!

We've been to Fashion Outlets numerous times as well and it's good. But we don't do GC alone. We also shop in Erie, PA. And the optics around the "no sales tax" on clothes in PA, is more attractive to us. We shop for a family of 4 (2 youngs kids 1 & 3) so we buy a significant amount.

IT's definitely far away from Toronto. But if you are not going to shop atleast $500 USD worth thing, then it might not be good option. Overall, I saw most cars in parking lot belong to ONTARIO. :) so now I don't have to say anything.

Also you have to keep in mind that you have to pay custom duty@border. So calculate gas+travelling time+custom duty before you go there.

Either way, I will say +ve for grove city outlet mall as there is only 6% tax on mosty things and also no tax on clothes.

We enjoyed Nestle Novelty icecream for $1 each. I can't imagine that price in CA....So food is cheaper in USA.

Last but not least, don't drive 110+ in USA. I saw atleast 7 cars caught for speeding.....

Grove city is a waste of time.

Depends what you're buying. You can always hit the niagara mall on the way to or from Grove city....keep in mind, GC has no tax on most stuff, so it's marginally cheaper.

But substantially further away, thus, not worth the extra drive and time for less stores than Niagara Fashion Outlets

I find that Niagara Fashion Outlets usually has better selection that Grove City or Waterloo. There are also many non-outlet stores nearby such as a new Walmart Super Center, Target, Sam's Club,...

I've been to Waterloo several times and I don't find the selection to be as good as Niagara Fashion Outlets. Also, it's in the middle of nowhere with nothing else nearby. Grove City has the advantage of being tax free but you'd have to buy a lot of stuff to make it worth your while. This outlet is also in the middle of nowhere with nothing nearby other than a stopover in Erie.

You are allowed $400 per person if gone for 2+ nights and $750 per person if gone for at least 7 days

.

You talk like the wear and tear on your car and tire is 0. You can realistically figure $.65/km as the actual cost of driving.

Also, it is a fallacy that there is no sales tax on clothing in Pa. There is on "luxury clothing," which includes such "luxuries" as swim suits, some shoes and other things that as basically at the state's discretion.

8 hours driving time to shop at Eddie Bauer. I swear people must be crazy. Or their time must have 0 value to them.

We went to Lundy's Lane on our way to Buffalo. (We spent the night at Niagara Falls). Man, was it a waste of time! Especially for cloths, there is no comparison. Fashion Outlet has way better pricing.

Also, be sure to sign up at Khols mailing list. You sometimes get these 15-20% off entire purchase coupon that you can use at the store, even off their clearance racks. :)

Well said,
There seems to be a misconception that the Niagara/Buffalo is not that good for shopping. That may have been true in the past, but today, many of the Buffalo and Niagara retailers have realized that their market is the Southern Ontario market (7-8million+ people) and cater to the Canadian market.
Whereas in the past, the Niagara Outlets may have been a "B" or "C" level store, has started to move up to an "A" level store for a retail chain.

I think the point that they were trying to make is that is costs money (gas + wear and tear on your car) to get to Grove City. It's about 600KM return from Niagara Falls, NY to Grove City. At a conservative 40 cents per KM, this works out to $240 for the use of your car to get there. If you save more than $240 in Grove City over Niagara Falls, NY, then it is worth it. You'd have to buy a lot of items to save $240. For me, it's just not worth it since I find that prices are usually the same between Grove City and Niagara Falls outlets

We got back yesterday from three days of US shopping (2 days at Prime Outlets in Grove City, PA and one day at Fashion Outlets in Niagara Falls, NY). We've been to both many times and we still prefer Prime Outlets. And in regards to the cost of driving (depreciation, gas etc), if we always thought that way, we would never go anywhere. We would just shop at Square 1 or Erin Mills Town Centre and drive a cheap ass used 1995 Civic. We factor in Prime Outlets as a vacation as we also shop in Erie, PA. From the number of Ontario plates at Prime Outlets, there are many many many people who still go there versus Fashion Outlets. We spent CAD $1,500 so the no tax on the kids & adults clothes and shoes offset some of the costs versus taxes in NY state. Again, these are my opinions only. That being said, I did enjoy Syms near Walden Galleria because you can pick up designer suits for work (like Nautica, Ralph Lauren, Oscar, Perry Ellis etc) in the $80 to $140 range.

Gentlefolks,

Does it make tangible difference to have the USD cash or have the USD credit card for shopping, than just regular Amex with the CAD.

Thanks.
