View Full Version : Vert/Lambo Doors: Have you DIY?

Donomight25

HI RFD!

Am thinking about gas cylinder vert doors for my 90' Accord. It's already lowered, rims, LED under glow ect. All was DIY by myself.

Anyone have experience in vert door installation, maybe with an older honda?

I went to a few mechanics, and they all wanted roughly $700 for install. They all quoted me 5hrs per door @ $70/hr. Eff that. I'll pocket the $ and struggle with install for a few days.

So... anyone ever done vert doors? Know someone who has?

Kinda funny.. took me a sec cause I had to shake my head and look at a post with someone taunting someone else trying to save $, on RFD of all things. Wiiicked.

I have actually done an H22a swap-out, full flex back exhaust, 5stage adjustable coil-overs, custom kit, skirts, midnight black custom paint with 12 squirts of clear coat and full leather interior DIY (save for the 4hrs I spent at NRG Automotive tuning the engine with a mechanic :D ) .

So... I figure I saved myself $5k to date. Save another $700 in labor? Why not?

Oh wait, the original point of your post was to call me a poseur. Um, my kit makes my car look like a Skyline. That's R34 for ya.

*laughs*

I actually own a 90' Accord ect. Just redid my exhaust 3 weeks ago. Selling the dual-tip OEM muffler I bought. Decided the dual-tip Magnaflow is better.

Only reason I am not doing suicide doors is because my car is a coupe.... hardware and the mods needed for that part of the car are too costly and time consuming.

Got any pics of the car? I see a modified accord on my way to work (in Burlington) sometimes.

Maybe try and get something unique like this:

Not sure if they're even available as an aftermarket add-on for any car out there but definitely adds some uniqueness.

just ignore people Dono, when you post on RFD about anything other than a factory stock car, you'll get a bunch of smartass comments about how you're "wrecking" your car, while most of them have a rear spoiler on their FF car that never sees the track sitting in their driveway, or don't know anything more about cars than what's listed in the catalogues. Even if someone has more car knowledge than you, doesn't mean their opinion is superior to your's as far as what looks good on cars.

IMHO, do whatever you want to your car, paint it pink if that's what makes you happy.

I personally wouldn't put lambo doors on my cars, but to each his own. Although I am interested in the installation process as I've never done one, if you can wait til mid december, I can lend a helping hand. PM me if you'd like.

Right, 'cept the car you linked to is a several-hundred-thousand dollar super luxury car. When you stand out in that car, it's because you've bought something most people only dream about.

As for the OP - Skip the lambo doors man. 5 hours per door for a professional mechanic = 15-20 hours for your, and then it'll still probably not work so well. The problem with making doors open up that were designed to open out is that there are a lot of things working in ways they shouldn't be. So... DIY? Only if you've done all the other mods to the car yourself and can sacrafice the car for a few days (or drive around without doors?)

Each have their own taste when it comes to mods. Just a serious question. Is getting in and out hard in those doors? The opening doesn't seem much. Plus parking indoor, would it hit the ceiling in some low ceiling parking garage?

If you enjoy it, go for it.

But IMO its a really dated look on a really dated car, that might not be on the road for that much longer (cost effectively).
Unfortunately, its also a bad investment as you'll have a hard time finding anyone to value those improvements if you ever sell the car...and I doubt insurance would comp you much for it either if you had to make a big claim.

But sensibility sometimes goes out the window when talking about cars, we've all been there.

When I was younger I worked all summer to be able to afford to put new chrome sidepipes on my even then old, 76 corvette. 2 months later a cop pulled me over and sent me for emissions testing and they made me take them off (no cats). And I had to buy a complete new exhaust. So it was all for nothing. But boy did she purr nice for 2 months.

A friend of mine put lambo doors on his Tiburon and it was a pain to get in and out because the opening was very small. I think this is a waste of money and will probably cause you problems later on down the road. But to each their own.

I'm calling the OP out. Mosport, full track. Post scan of your timeslip.

Regarding lambo doors, I know someone who had them on his showcar (Sees maybe about 100km/yr max). Even he recommends against it for a showcar. Everytime there's a strong wind he worries that it'll cause something to warp or break. You also have to deal with the top part of the door rubbing against the fender when it pops out to swing up. Be prepared to open and close your doors VERY carefully and in a specific way, or grind down either the door or fender corner.

EDIT: Apparently he installed them himself, so might as well save your money and do it yourself. Should be pretty straightforward if you have a kit of some sort...

But some more food for the troll, bon appetit!

PS. I'll go have a beer but you should get back to doing your high school homework or you might not get your allowance this week for saving up on those sweet doors!

in defense of the OP he never said what kind of shop he worked at.

could be a pet shop, barber shop, or even a donut shop.

Nice try....Lets do the math...5 yrs work, 15 yrs away=20 yrs (minimum). Assuming you werent 1 yr old when you were working, you're suggesting you might be 35+ yrs old.

Sorry, NOONE over 35 does ghetto mods like this, esp. on a $1000. beater like this. Grown ups know better.

Lol...fail.

Mods usually don't give much value to cars. Some buyers are even turned away by mods. Oh well, it's your money and car, do whatever you want. Just a personal preference, I don't like lambo doors on other cars unless you have a real lambo (that comes with them).
