was at a used car lot and i requested a carproof and they say oh they have carfax, same thing. I said there were issues with carfax that cbc news reported that it did not report. i said carproof potentially has a more accurate report. the guy says that carproof and carfax is the same company. I then ask him why carproof charges alot more then carfax... he then says its a marketting scam. I dont believe him.

Can someone shed some light on this?

Also the guy is a horrible liar... says all his cars are accident free, when some of them are very obviously that there has been damage and was just crappily blended and buffed. it was done so crappy that even i could tell. but he kept denying it.

carproof has access to insurance claims and carfax dont .. DONT GET Carfax !!! .. +1 for Carproof .. u can login to carproof site to see sample report . Carproof is indeed costly ... if u plan to get the carproof, get the higher end one ..

The sales guy is feeding you a line, on multiple levels. CarProof and Carfax have absolutely no affiliation with each other, and the price discrepancy is covered in CarProof's FAQ here: https://www.carproof.com/content/help/faqs.asp#1c.

Mayoo is generally correct, except that not everyone needs the most expensive product that CarProof has. CarProof's site has a breakdown of the different report types; pick which one is best for you. There are sample reports on the site as well.

Over the summer when I was car shopping, I found a Cadillac CTS that was priced a couple grand below market value. I called the guy and he said that there was minor damage to the front end due to it being stolen, and the tow truck damaged the front bumper cover. I ran a CarProof, and it uncovered a $17,000+ front end accident. Carfax showed no incident on the same VIN.

There are a lot of shady dealers out there. However, there are lots of dealerships that use CarProof themselves. I would take a good long look at any dealership that is avoiding the use of CarProof.

Googling CarProof shows that over the last year or two, it looks like all the major captive finance companies have jumped on board with CarProof for their off lease and certified programs. It looks like the industry itself is willing to spend the extra for CarProof; they must feel that the extra cost is worthwhile for their programs.

That CBC program earlier in the year was a good roast on Carfax. The most worrisome aspect is how the reporters were absolutely blown off by that awful Carfax spokesperson. They don't seem to stand by their own product at all..

:arrowu: true say .. sorry . i would recommend the higher report but get the report which fits ur need ..

they have another report called UCDA report or something . don't fall for that either ..

Also no reports will show anything if the owner fixed the car via private mechanic ( paid in cash ) without reporting.. in that case only trusted mechanic lookup will reveal it ..

In some cases CarFAX is much more detailed than CarPROOF. I checked a specific car on both and CarProof had much less info and no mileage, while CarFAX showed all the owners and mileage.

For your car shopping period I'd recommend to get unlimited CarFAX for a month - this will give you lots of info, like when the car was auctioned, when dealer offered it for sale, etc., and once you have picked a particular car you are ready to buy after test driving it and having it inspected, you get a CarProof report to make sure it's clean.
