im just wondering if there is anything one can do when a student who has h1n1 and is still coming to classes coughing every 2 minutes gasping for air.i understand everyone is entitled to learn and i am already avoiding this student as he/she is in all my classes and we are in a small class of 30-40 students.is there anything i can do asides from suck it up and just do my best to avoid this person?all my profs have told all students if you end up with it please do the whole class a favor and stay home etc till you are better and all , but this student is showing up for classes.at least one of my profs is well aware of this student having it and tells the student not to come near them.

How do you know that the person has H1N1? Paranoid much?

At school, it is very hard to avoid it. If you are paranoid, wear your own personal protective equipment, aka mask.

This wouldn't happen if schools didn't make it so ridiculous to make up exams and assignments. You basically have to jump through hoops and go through a lot of hassle if you decide to stay home, especially for labs.

yeah i understand that there might not be a thing to stop this ,i just find it weird that this student knows they have it and told all profs and still shows up as if everything is all dandy.i would hope that schools have procedures to deny this student knowingly that he/she has openly admitted it and is still showing signs of it and putting others at risk due to this.

agreed. and when you consider participation marks, it gets more complicated.....you could go get a doctor's note, but then you have to go to the doctor's office and expose yourself to more germs....it is probably safer (for the sick person) to just go to class and get full participation marks...but if he knows that he has H1N1, then I assume he has been to a doctor, so should have just got a note.

true, but for me, I'd still go to make sure that I don't miss anything. Sometimes profs drop hints....I can't have other students getting hints that I don't get.....grading is too competitive for me to give others a leg up on me for an illness. If I can walk, I'll be in class. I never miss class for anything.

Ya, I find it weird too. If I was planning to show up, I wouldn't tell people anything, yet alone identify myself as an H1N1 carrier.....i'd make something up to explain my cough.

I agree that it is unfortunate that others would be put at risk, but due to the competitive nature of university, I would go to class if I were this student. That said, this student doesn't seem too sharp since he self-identified as H1N1 carrier

Two of my room mates had H1N1.

I know and come in contact with 10ish people on a daily basis who have/had H1N1.

Thumbs up for an epic immune system and never taking medication for anything except post-surgeries.

Just don't sit near them.

well, i would just sit as far away from the person as possible... consider getting immunized next week perhaps?

Just because you have a cough doesn't mean you're contagious. H1N1 is nothing more than a strain of the seasonal flu.

They probably dont have H1N1... if they had H1N1... They'd be in a hospital bed or grave! :-0

One thing is don't eat near them and if they cough, literally move to another seat. It's better than catching h1n1 and guilts the carrier!

Universities really need to put in a no questions asked policy, it's set up at sfu as well, thank god.

If infact you are 100% certain that the student has H1N1, I would do the class a deed by confronting the student in the middle of the class. Tell him/her to stay home and get well.
