Sorry I dont know the right terminology for it. Here is an example: http://www.flickr.com/photos/impression/1403116362/in/set-72157604788998277/

I've got a Canon XS with the regular lens it comes with, is it possible to take shots like these? thanks!

Its simply unfocused. Turn the camera on manual and unfocus the image. When it exists your depth of field, it turns into a disk of confusion, appearing as what you see there.

The term was used in the first comment I read - bokeh, try googling that.

I think Kasakato meant "When is EXITS your depth of field..."

I think Kasakato meant "When is EXITS your depth of field..."

What an ironic typo. The sentence still works, but it meant the opposite of what I wanted.

I always thought at least some part of the frame should be in focus in order to be considered as bokeh?

Perhaps the OP's Flickr link is just not my cup of tea... It looks like the kind of shot I'd get after I get hammered on a night out. I don't understand all the complimentary comments, lol.

Just need to switch the camera to Manual mode, works really well if you're behind a glass so you can just use it as the reference point for the focus

Its a decent picture. Despite being OOF, the cars are distinguishable.
