Yes. The Yellow Rings of Death.. PS3 won't start. PS3 won't eject my disk. Nothing. It's just a $500 paperweight.
I haven't called Sony, but it's a first generation 60b model. OF COURSE it'll be out of warranty. That's out of the picture. I'll call Sony anyway, just to see if they'll honor the customer.

Other then that. What do I do? What CAN I do?

I think Sony will still fix it they done it for many people even 2-3 times. if they don't flip out how you been fake it up a loyal customer half your friends have the system just because you ranted on how good it is and they prob do it then.

But I think they will anyways.

Yeah sure, just ask to be transfered to the fanboy departament.
Just pay the $140, and have them fix it for you.

I'll try my bullcrap begging before paying.
They should be fixing my system for free. I've been a loyal customer since the original PlayStation, and it only affects Generation 1 systems.. Of course the ones that are void..

Yeah, they'll fix it for you for $150, but make them note down specifically that you want a 100% backward compatible unit back and not some refurbished 80GB. At the very least you should demand a Slim if they can't meet that request.

and some big corporation cares that you have purchased all their systems. Can you still back it up with 'receipts'???? Your one lost customer.

I don't think any amount of begging will get you anywhere. Good luck but you will end up paying $150 if you want a 60gb back.

wait why does he have to pay?Because he's out of warranty? The only game console with a warranty longer than 1 year in Canada is the Xbox 360.

+1 I was about to post that.

None of the big corps will do anything for you once it's out of warranty. Time to suck it up and pay up OP.

I think I'll just have it repaired by a local person. Estimated price is $60 - $100, free if he can't fix it. Should I go with him, or pay the extra $40 and wait 4 - 6 weeks with Sony?

You might as well try calling sony to see if theyll do it free, worst comes to worst its just one phone call. Id rather pay sony as it leaves your warrenty intact (or console still serviceable I guess). If the unauthorized guy breaks it your SOL.

fixed by whom????

there was an old thread in RFD (probably about a month or two ago) where a user sent their unit to a 3rd party and their unit came back worse than when it started.

For me, since it is the rare 60gb unit, I'd pay the 140 to Sony and get a short term warranty with that. Plus, shipping is not 4-6 weeks. Its relatively fast from what I've heard, especially if your in Ontario because that is where the repairs are done.

you can get it fixed for free its easy but requires some patience. Go through email, keep making your case, eventually you will get to a manager, who will likely say no. At the point forward it to your local newspapers columnist who deals with consumer affairs, i.e. ellen roseman of the toronto star (this was good enough for me :D) and make sure to cc a copy to Kyle Moffat, PlayStation Canada's PR.

Kyle Moffat, PlayStation Canada's PR flak doesn't like negative press...make sure you copy him on anything you send to the media.

My 60GB launch PS3 died in early Sept, and I ended up fixing it myself by reading instructions online. It's been running great for 2 months now. If you need info on how to fix your YLOD, I can help.

Mine has been freezing a lot lately. I usually play less than 1 hour at any given time but recently I've been really hooked on Socom Confrontation and when I play for a few hours the fan kicks in and stays on then it'll freeze during an explosion where graphics get intense. Hate to think how prone to freezing it would be if I played Uncharted 2.

It's the original 60GB model. YLOD imminent?
