I went on a tour of the UofW campus and I liked it. To get in you need high marks, so I remeber the tour and think about myself going there.

LOL i'm just as confused as you are.
there's no secret to it, just study hard, don't slack off and fall behind.. and don't hesitate to ask questions when you have a question about material.

Don't spend too much time studying, instead, spend enough time studying effectively.

Instead, get a korean girlfriend as stated many times. I'd state all the reasons why but with a little bit of research you can find out yourself.

Yea, the sight of a white guy holding hands with a nice Korean girlfriend will make many Asian dudes jealous lol. I get stares from UofT computer geeks all the time haha.

The Earth and Science building is pretty dope. You can look at dinosaur bones while you wait for class to start.
As for studying:
Divide your study load into three parts. Say you need to read 300 pages for a mid-term the next day, divide that into 100 page parts.
In the morning read 100 pages. Don't write down notes, just highlight what you think is important. After, take a 5 hour break.
In the evening read 100 pages, then take a nap. The nap will help your brain process all that useless junk you've just read.
Late at night/early in the morning, polish off the last 100 pages. You wont remember these pages very well, so just pray they're not on the mid-term.
Of course this doesn't work for math/sciences, but it works well for any classes that require a lot of reading. The more you can nap, the better you'll remember things. I personally nap 4 times on study days. A- average. Works for me.

You can pick up some grade-saving information by just being there. Indeed people really don't appreciate it's value.

Being in class is a must but more importantly, being in class physically AND mentally is the secret!
And don't bring a laptop to take notes, we all know you'll end up cruising on facebook! Pen and paper works for me throughout all 4 years of undergrad. Doing my masters now.

Unless you can't read your own notes like me.
I can also type at least 1.5 times faster than you write. If you have the discipline and you're not in a class with a lot of graphs/illustrations, taking notes on computer is a great thing.
Oh and don't underestimate the value of reviewing everything in a group. Studying in a group doesn't work for me, but doing a final review in a group, where you ask each other questions, is great for hammering in the details.

1. Get those books EARLY (like when they post the outline... START READING!)
2. Keep UP with those readings, cramming 5 chapters composing of 300+ pages 4 days before a midterm SUCKS!
3. Go to class if you want, personally i learn better from reading the text
4. Find out how you study well early and FAST! You dont want to be in 1st year still figuring out how you study effectively
5. Unless needed, leave that laptop AT HOME!

You re-read the highlighted parts? A lot of people rather take notes but I'm one to never do it. Highlighting might just work as effectively.

Never. It's simply the acknowledgment of the information by highlighting that helps you recall it easier during exams. You have to read the info, process it and debate whether it's worth highlighting, then when you're highlighting it, you're reading it a second time. High retainability.

Not in all cases.... some used textbooks i bought had like 10000 pages of highlighting (apparently every single page is important to the person  )

I do both all the time and yet I still don't do well in certain courses. I think we're all just naturally good with certain material, and depending on the course and the prof, being attentive in class may or may not make a difference.

Personally I think it really depends on the person. I went to like 4 classes last term and I ended up pulling 3.8+ sGPA. I just studied on my own + textbook

DOTAAAAA
There's always a bunch of ECEs at UTSG playing dota or SC in the labs... always.
Edit: As for studying hard, having a study group that's productive helps. I find being away from a computer and having only ur books, notes, etc with you in a library or study area a sure fire way to get studying. The trick is to get there.

How to do well? The answer is much more simple than you think. Just try hard. Strong determination combined with even average brain power will yield success in school. Rather than spending time to think of little "shortcuts", just DO IT. Stop reading this thread and go prepare for your next class. You've went through 10+ years of education. You should already have experienced the tools to succeed academically. There is no magic to doing well.
Go to class to learn --> study and do assignments to make sure you understand --> ace the tests/exams to show you know your stuff. Adjust the amount of time you need based on your brain power. If you want to be safe, obviously spend more time.

What if you cant decipher the technical textbook analysis and only part of the teacher/profs lecture, to your understanding? notes and paying attention in class helps partially...
but ultimately, pretty much need everything down to coles notes/layman terms/tutor in order to fully grasp the concepts? btw, its not even math/science, but liberal arts! or do some people with such learning disability do not belong in school?
