are these people allowed to bring their kids? If so, then you can give free gifts to the kids. Make them specify how many kids they are bringing. I find that to be a common thing in company parties when kids are involved.

In the great Canadian way, make sure to call it a "holiday party" to not offend people. ;)

If your office is big enough, maybe have some decorations setup and bring the kids in, along with food and games, it should be great.

I get pissed off every time I hear about people getting offended with 'Christmas.' If you are an immigrant to this country, like myself, then you should ADAPT to and ACCEPT Canadian culture. It is not your place to try to change it and make it what you believe to be correct. Period. Afterall, it was YOU who chose to come here. It wasn't Canada that forced you to come here.

I was being sarcastic hence the ;)

But I agree it's ridiculous, Christmas is mostly secular now in Canada. Heck it's more like a winter celebration rather than a religious thing. I'm an atheist and I still enjoy the Christmas celebration.

Since arriving to Canada, I have switched from eating beef favor Ramen to eating Ramen with Canadian maple syrup on it. To make sure that I am Canadian enough, I have also started watching American sitcoms.

...bit seriously, what is hell is the Canadian culture? Please define that for me.

I'm not offended by people calling it "Christmas", even though I'm a member of a major international Japanese religion that doesn't recognize old-world Christian religion.

Seriously though, to the OP, why don't you just ask your staff for their input? Also, what sort of money are you willing to/able to spend?

IMHO, the worst thing you can do is 'half-a*s' a Christmas party. Don't be like one of my former employers that invited everyone to a run-down, smoky bar in Calgary (Skanks i think), set up a bunch of ******** games, and made me hang out with nerds all night without even buying me more than 1 drink.

How about making a xmas tree pinata that's filled with After Eight mints and Lindt chocolates, and then get the kids to wack it with tree branches. The hard part is making the pinata, so I'd start now. If u buy pinatas in some stores, they can be impossible to wack open. (I know this from personal experience.)

Also, u can get some Hanukka minoras for ambience lighting.

Offer shortbread cookies. That is a xmas-y thing.

Plug in some of those animated deer/santa white lights. Hang some silver or green garlands around the room. Hang some mistletoe over a door or something. Play xmas cds.

Classy.

The bar's name actually was "Skanks".

Unfortunately, it did not live up its name.

People in Calgary might know what I'm talking about..

I, like pitz, am a member (in name only, I guess) of a major non-western religion and don't care about christmas one way or another, but I hate those people who go out of their way to emphatically wish me a merry CHRISTmas because they think I'm one of them mooselimbs. It's weird getting these people around you, because you know they just want to start an argument or prove some point you couldn't care less about. I can get being peeved at people who get offended at others celebrating christmas, though.

It's called Christmas... So what's wrong with someone wishing you a Merry Christmas?

If the day was called 'Holiday' then I could see them saying Happy Holidays.

Back OT... Good luck with the party. I would suggest talking with the co-workers and getting some ideas.

It's the way they do it more than what they say. It's usually older white folks, but they get this expression on their face like they're expecting a snarky comeback or they've just made a touchdown at the superbowl. Too much Fox News I guess.

Anyways, back on topic. If your company has it's own building and people have kids hold a general cocktail-type party with a guy in a santa costume like they have in the malls. If there are no kids, rent out a hotel ballroom and just do a dinner party.
