I built myself a similar spec system 2 years ago for less (no LCD though - they were still pricey then). It's not bad for the price, but it's not eligible for the free Win 7 update. Add that in and you'll find better deals elsewhere. Like the Acer quad at BB the other week for example.
Edit: Actually my old machine was quite a bit better. 1.6GHz processor? This thing is basically a very bulky netbook. I think that same CPU is in netbooks now.

The LCD makes this a tempting offer. The BB offer for $329 (if you get the coupon to work) was hot, and there may be more similar deals with Vista Home Premium systems that do qualify for Win7 upgrades - retailers have to offload those Vista bricks somehow...

Use NTune to OC the CPU to 2Ghz.

It's definitely not unattractive - for the right user, that is. I once paid more than this for a Maxtor HDD that failed right after its 12 month warranty expired. It just shows what a bargain we can get these days. That said, there are even better deals out there, at least for experienced users like I assume most of us to be.

powerful enough to play TF2 on medium settings?

Nov 4th, 2009, 12:27 AM
if i recall correctly, i dont think that computer is even able to run smoothly on low settings lol. TF2 require a really good graphics good to run it smoothly. even on medium ...
having said that. it is tempting. wondering if there are more info on the computer itself. like what can be expanded.
Talking about atom, each serves a different type of audience. so, i would go for atom for the low power consumption though.

Here's the Specifications Model: EL1300 (support.gateway.com/emachines/desktop/2009/emachines/el/el1300/EL1300sp2.shtml)
The power consumption is not bad at all. What I like most about this desktop
bundles is the 20" widescreen LCD with built-in speakers :cheesygri

How can anyone complain about this deal? New Retail Box, warranty, perfect for relatives - And 20" LCD included! Come on, buy new or used in BST. It's a good price today (nobody knows about tomorrow).

THE attractive thing about this deal is the 20" mon. Say $100-120 for the mon and $180-$200 for the rest aren't bad but DOES NOT HOT either! Also since this is from WM, may it also be YMMV?

I actually liked the look of the machine & the LCD to begin w/...I thought of buying it at the original price of $499 I think...it's the one that's got white LCD and the white mini case right?
So how 'bad' is this machine in preformance. I want to get a seperate machine for my kids so that we don't have to fight for a computer at times.
My kids only play flash games...like treehouse, disney, hotwheels...sometimes they might play FB cafe world, pet society etc......is it good enough for those?

If this computer is only going to be for those types of games, then yes, it will be good enough to play them.

I have seen this at $398 at almost every walmart. This could be a clearance item at that particular store. Quite a good looking desktop + monitor combo(I like the white finish).
Wow..have to pay 2 environmental fees for this..$13.44 + 12.03 if you are in Ontario!

If I were to switch to Win7, would this PC be any good?
Father in law is running Windows XP on a 6 year old emachine and all he does is check golf scores and get suckered into playing mafia wars on fb.
It's so virus-ridden that I feel dirty everytime I touch it, to be honest with you.
I just don't know how smooth it'll run with Windows 7 on it.

A new desktop's appeal is its warranty. On the other hand, since it's for your kids and don't need anything spectacular: buy a USED laptop for $200 or New netbook for $200-$250 in BST. Portable, no tax, balance of warranty, and your kids won't argue with you.
When you have kids, your goal is saving money ;)

Awesome! Thanks.
And I called around and sure enough, they won't honour the price unless the store is clearing it out. As it states on the page "This item may not be available or in-stock at all stores. Pricing and selection may vary by store. Visit your local store for current information on pricing and availability."

Bit the bullet and purchased one.
I asked them whether the return policy has been extended for the holiday season, and of course, no one knew the answer.
Perhaps someone here can shed some light on this?
On the receipt, it says electronics are 30 days, but is it longer because of Christmas returns?

Local WM posted the price at $398 on the shelf so showed the web ad @ $299. The associate said that it is US website but it is really from cdn WM website. To cut short, he decided to give a scan at the cash counter and surprise!! it rang up $299 so no more hassles about the web ad and instore prices.
BTW, thanks OP for the link otherwise would have ignore this deal as not willing to pay the instore display price. Imagine that now am back to having an emachine computer for the same price of the first one (1995 if my memory recalled) except the extra bonus is having a 20in lcd. Going to downgrade to XP as soon as I find xp drivers or upgrade when windows 7 becomes more 'stable' with its own drivers instead of vista ones.

Hi there,
Lucky for us in Quebec, they have to give what it is advertised, either in the flyers or on the website (even though it is noted on the website that price many varies in stores), but that's total BS since Walmart.ca doesn't have a way to buy it online and not to mention, that website is for price reference.
You could also file a complaint to the BB for false advertising. It's like a bait-and-switch, at least, by Quebec laws, it's illegal...

Hi All,
I grabbed one for a friend and one for a family member today. These should run Windows 7 just fine. I have Windows 7 Professional 32bit on an old Centrino 1.6Ghz laptop (dell 700m) with 768MB RAM and it runs great along with Office 2007.
Really can't beat this deal with 20" LCD. Monitor is easily worth $110, that means computer with 2GB RAM, 320GB HD, DVD Burner etc. etc. is only $190.
Wow, can't believe these haven't sold out yet.
Will load one with Win7 and report back.

the BB $329 deal was esp. good if you could double dip on the coupon savings via ISPU (if successful reservation) --- $10off100 online, and $10off50 instore (SPC coupon)

really good deal.....cheapest i've seen for a brand new all in one system, even refurbs. dont go for that low
Tigerdirect has the refurbs. model of that lcd going for 109.99+tax

I wonder if there's ANY way to get a video card to work with PCIe-1x :(
This would be PERFECT if it only had an ATI IGP chipset. :( 6150 is just garbage... such a smoking deal though!
EDIT: It does! It'll have reduce bandwidth of course, but you could throw a low-profile 8400GS or other in there without too much fuss! Small mod required, but doable. It'll beat the snot out of the onboard 6150!

Picked up the display model today which was good for another 10% off. So $269 for a desktop with 2Gb Ram, 320Gb HDD, Super DVD with Label Flash (no clue what that is) and a 20" LCD. Great price, can't compare this to a tiny netbook unless you like looking at small screens/keyboards. There is definitely a market for this (all those older parents come to mind!). Biggest issue I have so far is the Vista Basic sucks as only Vista can and I'm trying to copy 4gb worth of data off a CD to the HD and it's talking FOREVER (like 16Min according to the windows explorer). I tried installing direct from the CD rom and that was taking forever as well so I tried copying it to the HDD to run from there (This is lego batman). Not sure if this is a vista issue or a PC issue but it is terrible at access speeds. I tried running Nero Disk Speed and the respons time was in the 110ms range. That seems awfully low. Anyone else getting that problem? DVD's seem to play fine
superdave

Wow so I'm trying to run lego batman and this thing is an absolute snail in terms of speed. Not really playable, going to try updating to the latest drivers. It's not like Lego games are hard core 3D either. Kinda sad so maybe no games at all on this machine other than flash based? I'll keep you posted (only thing I won't try is downgrading to XP to see if that makes it faster). Want to make sure the machine doesn't suck before reformatting the drive and losing the ability to return the unit.

Well new driver, same crappy performance. The Windows Experience is a whopping 2.5! My 5 year old laptop has better performance than this machine (from a graphic point of view and it's a Dell 6000!). Processor is a 3.4, Memory is a 4.8, Graphics is a 2.8, Gaming graphics is a 2.5, Primary HDD is a 5.9. Not sure if lowering all of the settings on the graphics will make it any better.
The LCD has a DVI input and the usual DSub but the box only has the dSub output.
Overall great for websurfing, crappy for anything with even an ounce of 3d graphics or basic gaming graphics. For the price, good deal, just don't expect alot out of this machine. It may actually run better in XP or Win7, I just haven't tried it.

I looked in the BIOS and didn't find a setting for the video ram. Based on the system status, it looks like 256Mb ram. Not sure how else to make it better. Also batman does take more resources than StarWars (which I also have).

Well, there's the really glaring problem with this system. Not only is it an underpowered version of Athlon 64 or Sempron systems of a couple of years ago (slower clock to lower power consumption in laptops - and power too), but there's absolutely no way to compensate for it with a decent PCIe 16x video card - because they didn't include a slot! The price may be low, the case somewhat attractive (if you like shiny white plastic), but performance-wise you'd be better off buying a cheap laptop. Or even a used 2-year old AMD system - they had better performance AND expansion then. Even the systems from eMachines!
The Acer Quad from BB absolutely blows this out of the water. No wonder THAT system sold out so fast. This one is cheap for a reason.

Through an x1 slot? Sounds like a waste of a card to me. Wouldn't the slot be far too much of a bottleneck? An x16 slot would have saved this system. Dumb not to include it. It would probably have only cost them $1 more at the manufacturing stage.

Can you post a better deal for $299?
There are equivalent-powered (and similarly "expandable" - i.e not really) laptops out there for $400 or less. Even at the larger retailers. Some even have Win 7. Take a look.
I bought an Acer SFF PC with Quad Q8300, 4GB DDR3, 640GB HDD, DVD-RW, decent Intel 4500 graphics, wireless network, x16 expansion, etc, free Win 7 upgrade, "$300+" s/w bundle, etc, AND my previously purchased Dell full-HD 23in LCD - all for just $500! Now THAT is a deal!
$300 might be the lowest retail price ATM, but it's still not the best deal, even for entry-level buyers. Esp once you add enviro fees - then you may even find cheaper laptops.
Another option might be to buy used. Most systems built in the last few years will outperform this particular eMachine, and have plenty of upgrade options too. Used systems likely already have a dedicated graphics card added too - a definite bonus over the integrated 6150 graphics that this system is stuck with.

So the short answer is no, you can't find a better deal for the price. I think most people in here are tired of hearing about the BB deal. We get it, but the deal is dead so move on. If you have something constructive to say about an active deal, great.

Well, here's a hint. I found a 15.6in laptop, similar 1.6GHz Athlon processor, same capacity HDD, same RAM, same DVD capability, better graphics, same price, lower enviro fee. And it's still out there (it was a few days ago anyway). That's a better deal, active too. But I'd still recommend spending another $70-$100 and getting a new Win 7 system instead. You'll be happier in the long run.

Mine is too, but it isn't that loud. Room has to be fairly silent, and from the front you don't heard much (it's louder behind the monitor). Also, turning up the brightness to 100 seems to make it mostly go away.
Bought this yesterday to use as a linux server/router. I wanted something with low power consumption unlike my older PCs. I measured this system and it uses about 40watts sitting idle. Installed Ubuntu 9.10 64bit, ethernet and sound worked automatically.

720p might work using CoreAVC codecs (the best software MKV codec, but you have to pay for it). If you want to have hardware acceleration for all movies then you need an ATI Radeon 4550 minimum according to this (http://www.missingremote.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2564&Itemid=230&limit=1&limitstart=1). But even with a Radeon 4550 I'm not sure the CPU is enough...

Its cheaper and its more performant than the 4350 native pcie x1. The x1 is a bottle neck but you will get more performance than the 4350.
Also for the low profile part, just remove the metal bracket and the vga cable.

Without hitting tab, mine automatically comes up with a splash screen that says to hit "Del" for setup and "F12" for boot menu.
F12 lets you select a boot device for that boot up. Not sure why "Del" or "F12" isn't working for you. Maybe you aren't hitting it soon enough? As soon as you power it up, try hitting "Del" repeatedly.

Hi All,
Tried everything. Been building and fixing computers since 1995. Was curious to see this thing run on Windows 7 as I have had it running flawlessly on some old Barton core 2500+ with 1GB of RAM. I finally formatted the HD and still no go, something must be screwed up with bios/motherboard. At this point, not worth my time and hassle so I am taking it back. I have recovery discs created, but no use if can't boot up off DVD drive. If anyone gets Windows 7 running, let me know the experience as I might go back and get another one next week when I have more time.

What I meant is it's one thing to hack away at your own hardware, but quite another to advise others to do the same, esp when they would clearly lack sufficient technical know-how.
If you do get it to work, how about posting a pic so people can see exactly what it is you've done.

There's little point beefing up the CPU when the GPU is the real limiter here - and that can't be upgraded. You just need to accept this machine as it is, and always will be, if you buy one.

If anybody wants to take it at cost please let me know. Located in thornhill area.

I purchased one today for a friend who will just use for browsing and using accounting software . I was a little uneasy about the dvd drive as it loaded sideways and it looked very delicate.
Apparently I was correct as I was installing Rogers Online Protection and the disc got stuck.
It stopped reading the information on the disc..I rebooted a few times ...and of course I tried the paperclip trick in the little hole (powered on and off) ...along with many other options including employing gravity to get it to give up the disc and seeing if the drive is recognized in device manager (it does) and right clicking and ejecting..(obviously does not).
All to no avail..that disc seems like it is in there for good.
I was happy with the performance for the first 4 hours..
Not sure if I will exchange or just get a refund.
I do agree that this is not a machine for a hardcore gamer but I was very happy with the specs/cost ratio of the system.
Any other tricks to get that sucker out of the drive without opening the box and voiding the warranty would be appreciated =-)
Curious to know if any other purchasers of this unit had problems ?

I think I got the last one in Fredericton, if I could update the graphics card for cheap, I'd keep it in a heartbeat. Mine is going back soon, its new in box, didn't try it or anything. If anyone wants it, let me know.

Not a chance. I'm pointing out valid weaknesses with this system, as evidenced by other posters like those above. If my posts spare somebody the disappointment and frustration of buying, checking, then returning the machine then they are well worthwhile.
You can live in your own fantasy world where you ignore the realities and facts if you like, but don't expect everybody else to join you.
This machine is fine if it meets your needs right out of the box. But it's not worthwhile, and maybe not even possible, to try to correct its weaknesses. There are better deals out there.
BTW, still waiting for a pic of your wonderful video card modification that you expect everybody else to do.

I have to say that this PC has a purpose - for somebody who wants the CHEAPEST computer they can get. This is a CHEAP computer, it is less than $200 if you factor in the cost of the monitor! There are better deals for this price, but without a monitor. I rarely if ever see computers on for less than $200...soooo if e-mail and web and word processing are what you are after, this is a snappy machine (from my experience with it) and the only real limitation is it can't do games or watch HD video.

Like Tornado F2 suggested, it's not worth even bothering to mod the unit.
We picked one up last week for the office. It's a nice small computer that takes little desk space. Stripped Vista off it and installed XP Pro for use with our server at work. Works just fine for office work. Great price for a new terminal in an office that doesn't get used much.

I totally agree..I did the same thing. Took Vista off.
20 inch Monitor only worth a $100 off?
I have heard a few people mention on here mention there are better deals out there.
Mind you..all depends on what you are looking for..but let's say you are looking for a better budget computer.
What deals would you say are superior?

Its white case probably wouldn't look out of place in a medical office either. :)
For the right (basic) uses it's likely fine. But I think home users will need better video performance than it's capable of offering.

I was referring before to basic laptops. You'd be amazed (as I was) at how cheap some now are, and they offer practically identical performance to this eMachine, for little extra cost, esp when you add $40+ enviro fees to this bundle. Possibly even better performance, as they use more modern components. nVidia 6150 graphics are at least 2 years old now.

not everyone wants a laptop.
also "esp when you add $40+ enviro fees to this bundle"
does not apply everywhere, like in quebec.

If you had a laptop you'd likely chop off the LCD screen anyway.
Believe it or not I'm offering advice to others, not you. Most RFDers don't live in QC. You're free to go your own way, as I'm sure you will. Bon chance with your modding efforts. Just quit trying to mod me.

Seriously - you have very little idea what you're talking about and spreading FUD. You are NOT helping anyone here and making yourself look foolish. You decide the next move there.
That said, this is STILL a great deal for $300. No you can't easily mod it. No, it's not a powerhouse.
For someone who wants a basic email/internet machine and a nice screen - this fits the bill and even looks pretty snazzy.
Gamers, enthusiasts and Tornadoes - move on.

What I've said has been accurate. If you guys want to waste your time and energy buying and returning it that's your problem. I've said all that I need to say. People with sense will recognise that the advice is solid.
I've followed my own advice and picked up a superior laptop for my relatives instead. I'm sure they'll be happier for it, and that's all that counts.

I've run mine thru some DVD movies and on you tube. Also streamed live TV on it and everything seems fine for that type of use. It will suck for most games unless you turn the details way down. For the use I have planned for it, it will be a great deal (I got mine for $270 as it was the display model).

They have one of these bundles left at the Walmart at HWY 27 and Langstaff in Woodbridge as of tonight. They had two but I bought one as a gift, good deal IMO.
