So i need to apply for a VISA card asap. i have a monthly payment to make that amounts to roughly $6000.00, and this payment will be due for several years.

I have great credit, therefore that is not a concern...

I love to travel, but i am also open to any card that offers useful points (do not want a card that gives points towards a car though).

Please recommend me a card - thanks in advance RFD!!!

1. Have you verified that this payment can in fact be made by CC?

2. Does it have to be VISA or can MC / AMEX be used as well?

You will cumulate a lot of points so the CIBC AeroGold is the best card for you. No other canadian program beat aeroplan for business/first and even sometime economy seat rewards.

RBC Avion Visa. Lets you buy flights directly with points, or transfer twice a year to BA points with a 50% bonus.

Counting the 50% bonus, a flight to London (on British Airways) takes 33 333 Avion points vs. 60 000 AP points. Plus BA is better then AC.

Even if they never run the promo again, a trip to London is still only 50 000 points on BA.

If there is no rewards availability on BA or Oneworld, then you can use 65 000 points and Avion will buy you a ticket to Europe up to $1300.

Travel cards give you the best bang for the buck so to speak but for me cash is king. If you like cash then you could look at the MBNA smart cash card. I just got me a TD Gold Elite cash back card (1%) and a TD Select Service account. With the account the fee on the card is waived and with the card I get 1% cash back plus free roadside assistance.

Since you like travel I would go with either RBC Avion or TD First Class Visa.

They both have their pluses and minuses - I suggest you go here which has a very good breakdown of the differences. They differ both in terms of insurance and rewards. The big plus for Avion is the ability to do the BA transfer, the big plus for TD is a) It's not RBC, and b) The enhanced percent back via TD travel centre, and the trip cancellation insurance.

The above link is outdated.

The Avion card yes but specifically the Infiniti is the way to go. 1.25% points when purchasing anything related to travel. Travel insurnace, and lots of other extras as well.

I've used both CIBC AeroGold as well as Avion and by far prefer the Avion. The bonus of points transfer at a 50% premium twice a year is amazing. Plan it right and you can fly Cathay Pacific to Asia for what essentially will cost you about 33,333 points. Try that with an Aeroplan card.

There are no guarantees that RBC will continue the promo in the future. Based on past experience, there is supposed to be one right now, but there isn't.

Take the promo out, it's still a better program. Didn't find the need to mention that as someone did above already.

You can also when booking travel book through Carlson Wagonlit and get x2, and x3 the points.

As for the current promo, typically it's the second-third week of november that it comes for the fall. It's been once a year for a LONG time and twice a year for the last 2 years. I'm sure there will always be SOME sort of cross promotion one way or another, just have to watch for them.
