I do not have any experience for applying a Visa for India.

But this website may help you:

Best to apply in person.

The procedure for visas to India.

Downloaded and application form.
Fill it out.
You have to send your passport with the application as well.
You will need to send a passport size photo.
You have to attach a money order
You also have to attach a self addressed paid Expresspost envelope with the application.
Mail it to the nearest consulate near you.
Send it by Expresspost with a signature option.

If you apply in person.. it will take forever.. Line-up starts about an hour before the office opens and they only take requests till noon or something. So be ready to sit there for at least 3 - 4 hours.

I went to the Brampton office this weekend to drop off my application. Got there around noon and the line up was about 80 ppl outside the building. Was told that they close the doors at 2 and if you are not inside the office (which was already full) you will not get processed. Luckily I knew someone in line and got in, once inside they were extremely helpful.

Make sure when filling out hte form you specify EITHER Tourist OR Visitor (The Visitor Visa is double the price but allows extensions, while the tourist VISA can not be extended)

The office also accepts credit and debit cards, I was given a tracking number and told it should be ready in 3-5 business days.
