View Full Version : Amazon uses UPS now?

Ugh, I just ordered something from Amazon and when I got home I noticed a UPS notice... which is a pain because I basically have to wait an entire day for a package that could come any time from 8 am to 7 pm.
When did they switch to UPS and is there a way to use Canada Post? Their website doesn't mention any changes and the shipping options are still vague ("Free Super Shipping!" or whatever).

Ugh. I hate UPS. I refuse to order from costco.ca any more because UPS always tries to deliver to residences during the daytime M-F. Lame. I noticed Canada Post delivers to houses evenings and weekends - now that is smart. I usually email a company and ask who they ship with, and if it's UPS I tell them I won't be buying from them until they get a shipper who offers better service.

I first noticed the switch around September 20th, so they've been doing it for about a month now. Delivery times seem to be a bit better -- their Super Saver shipping used to take me 3-5 days on average, while I now seem to get it in 5 from their Ontario depot to Manitoba. And Express used to take 2-3 days, while it now only takes 1.
While the timeframe from deliveries is now wider (usually 10 AM to 12 PM with Canada post, now 9 AM to 4 PM with UPS), the UPS driver in my area usually retries to deliver the package again after 5:30 PM, so I've been quite pleased with this new service.

Does anyone know if Amazon.COM uses UPS now too? I was planning on ordering something from Amazon.com and having it shipped to a USPS P.O. Box in the States but if they ship UPS, then it won't work...

Hrm, yeah, I guess it's been going on for a while now. It's just inconvenient if you live in an apartment and you don't live in a city. Oh well. While they generally have better deals on media, it's not worth it if I have to spend time waiting for a package.
What's worse is that you can't even ship it to a UPS Store for pick up. You'd think that their own store would be able to hold stuff for customers, but that'd be too much to ask.

Wow, this is terrible, looks like I won't be going near Amazon.ca at all now. It's not worth saving $1-2 if I have to deal with UPS.
Edit: Sent a complaint to Amazon for whatever good it will do. I hope everyone does the same.

I ordered 3 books around the 18th of October to get the free shipping. 2 of the books were out of stock. They shipped the first book on the 20th via Canada Post and the other 2 books on the 25th also with Canada Post. Got both packages a day or two after their ship dates. Maybe I got lucky. Glad I didn't have to deal with UPS. I avoid them whenever possible.

I'm at home 90% of the time, so unless they can manage to sneak up while I'm away I'll probably be all right. All the same, would much rather have them deal with Canada Post.

I sent an email to them and it seems to be random. Here's their reply (which must be a form letter, but whatever):
Thank you for writing to us at Amazon.ca.
I apologize for any inconvenience caused.
I understand that you wish to ship your orders via Canada post, but unfortunately as the assigning of carriers for the order is automated we are unable to guarantee you whether the items will be delivered via Canada post. I'm sorry for this inconvenience.
We are aware that our choice of delivery services reflects on our business as a whole, and we appreciate your feedback. I have passed your message along to our shipping department, as I know they will want to read about your experience.
However, please be assured that if a package shipped from Amazon.ca is ever lost, stolen, or damaged, we will take appropriate action to compensate you.
If you are unable to receive the package at your home address, UPS will redirect the package to another address; however, they require at least one delivery attempt before they're able to make this change. I hope you'll still be able to receive the package this way. Once UPS has made at least one delivery attempt call them at:1-800-742-5877.
Ugh. Oh well.

unless there's a freakishly good deal, amazon.ca has pretty much lost my business. I used to love ordering discs from them.
I'm not home during the day and the UPS depot is so far away. I live downtown, don't use a car.
Canada Post has parcel pickup outlets everywhere. So I can bus/walk to pickup my packages.
UPS' depot is in the very northwest part of town and no transit goes close to the depot.
I know UPS doesn't have convenient Depot's in most cities so its a total pain in the ass. Which sucks because they have UPS store's in alot of places, but they don't use them for parcel pickup. Imagine how great their customer service would be if they used the UPS stores for parcel pickups.
Anyways I'm not afraid to order from amazon for fear of them shipping UPS.

Amazon.com varies. Since August 4th, I've put in four orders, and one has been through USPS, two through DHL, and one through UPS. The most recent one (October 27th) was DHL.

Clearly the decision was made by people who've never lived in Canada.

Yeah, seriously. It's funny, I live in Guelph and I'd have to go to Kitchener to pick up a package. What sense does that even make?
It looks like UPS stores are a separate company that just uses the UPS name... but they offer mailbox services as well. Why can't they just accept UPS packages for free? I'd actually use them more if this was the case.
Oh well, too bad for everyone I guess. They lose my business and I lose on some deals.

I believe that UPS stores are mostly independent franchises. They won't handle packages for pickup because UPS won't pay them for the handling time this would take. And yeah, they should do like the Post Office which pays their franchise stores to handle the undelivered packages. But hey, it's UPS.

Just call UPS and tell them to re-deliver.
FYI, I got a shipment from Amazon today and it was via Canada Post.

Not as easy. I did so today and was told it could come "any time" tomorrow and if I was not there it would go back out once more. I cannot be there when the driver arrives nor do I have any alternate locations to ship to so I have to pick it up at the centre which is a two hour trip out of my way.

I just ordered a few books from Amazon.ca and it says it gave me a Canada Post tracking number.
Maybe it has to do with what items were ordered?

Maybe they are changing things but as far as I know, they only use UPS for bigger shipments. i.e. small DVD or book orders should still be shipped via CP. I've only had UPS shipments on electronics from Amazon.

It really looks like there's no consistency nowadays. Either that, or they are slowly moving over to UPS completely.

For some reason when I first saw this thread I thought it was only Amazon.COM. But now that I know...
Two things good about Canada Post: 1) I have a community box. Most packages end up there so I can pick them up at my leisure. 2) There are two pick up locations for huge packages, both less than 6 minutes drive from me. One is a 15 minute walk.
I used to buy giant boxes of books once in a while from them. Not anymore. I won't be buying anything from them until I know for sure they will ship Canada Post ONLY. I think the UPS depot for me is in Vaughan (can't find it on the site's store locator). HAHAHAHAHA not really that funny now that I think of it... :(
