Fallsview Poker Classic! Who's going?

Was at Fallsview on the weekend and they are having a Fallsview Poker Classic in January 2010. It doesn't compare to the 10k buy-in for CPT, but a lot more affordable now, but won't be televised and I can't see any big names attending.

Details:

January 8: $1,000 NLHE ($930+70) 5,000 starting chips
January 10: $2,500 NLHE ($2350+150) 10,000 starting chips
January 12: $5,000 NLHE ($4,800+200) 20,000 starting chips

I've read that max entrant to those tournies is 300. And that and extra 3% will be taken from prize pool for grats.


Fallsview is currently running Satellites

Step A:
- $120 (100+20)
- 1st wins seat to $1,000 event.
- 1500 chips & 10-minute blinds; which runs every day

Step 1:
- $90 (70+20)
- Top 2 win seat to Step 2.
- 1500 chips & 10-minute blinds; runs every day

Step 2:
- $350 (315+35)
- Top 3 win seat to $1,050 Step 3 satellite.
- 15 minute blinds and only same 1500 chips; runs every day

Step 3:
- $1,050 (1000+50)
- 1st place wins $5,000 seat, 2nd & 3rd place win $2,500 seat.
- 2000 chips & 15-minute blinds.
- Saturday & Sunday only

From my experience, the Step A and Step 1, are crap shoots, it's pretty much a super turbo, blinds start at 25/50 and increase every 10min, which in live play is maybe 3 hands. Theres no room for play here, just peel an A and shove. ALSO even if you could win 1 in every 4 step 1 registered for. You would still lose to the rake.

Step 2 and 3 are better in that at least top 3 get paid, but also 15 min blinds and fairly low starting chips, but also more skilled players.

I might just end up playing cash game and buying in directly. But the actual $1,000 tournament is on a friday, and the $5,000 is on a tues, so I would have to take day off work.


Anybody else going to play these satellites? I wouldn't mind playing a non rake satellite with anybody thats willing to play $100 buy-in top moves on, or $200 1 table SnG top 2 move on.

It was a family vacation in Niagara Falls, so I didn't have that much time to play at the casino.... but the first day I played one SNG (3rd) and the second day I played a 1/2 table and turned $100 into $274 in 75 minutes.

much prefer the ring game.

That being said.. I am not sure if you are interested, but there is a $50 buy-in event this weekend in here Oshawa.

I have the blind schedule, 30 minute levels with starting chips at $2500 and the first level 10/20.

The patience factor is 14.45 and the Skill level is 6. PM me if interested in and I will forward you the contact information of the organizer.

ya the ring game at niagara is very easy, just requires patience. the SnGs there are worse, these satellites are at fallsview where the ring games start at 2/5 but also decent enough to pick off the birds.

i don't think i'd be interested, oshawa too far for a $50 tourny, which probably takes rake, unless there are over 500 people playing.

no rake... they are looking at having about 120 people.

once they cover expenses (lunch and dinner provided, as well as something like $125 for hall rental) the rest is going to the prize pool...

I think the goal is the winner to take $1k, and pay the top 10 or so.

cool too bad i'm taken for a home game this weekend, might have taken the offer for the oshawa tourney as i would be in the area. agreed with SLOW live poker... man... everyone thinks they're hellmuth with every decisions... so annoying.

too bad a local rfd ring game didn't materialize (not sure if it's legal anyway). -sg

I'll at least buyin to the $1k event and figure out a way to play in the main event. Stupid how the tournies overlap as I wouldn't mind playing all 3. Those step satellites are useless.

almost sure going to play the 1k by either qualifying for it or worse comes to worst just buy in. I heard 80k was for 1st place. And see if I can get backed for the bigger events, unless of course I do good in the 1k :lol:

I don't really play many tournaments but play mainly 1-2 cash games, How long did it takes you guys to move up levels in live play. and..what is an acceptable bankroll for certain levels? I'm going with 30 max buy-ins for now, I'm trying to get up to 2-5 but im struggling to get my bankroll up to an acceptable level. It's a combination of bad bankroll management/bad play/bad run, i really want to move up, any tips from you cash game players out there?


I don't really like playing tournaments, everyone's a "I read many poker books so I know how to play poker" types, I'm sure alot of you know what I'm talking about.

I think only actyper here plays for a living. For bankroll i think it depends on your playing style and your outlook on poker.

I'd say this is for 6max or fullring. HU... omg... variance city, isn't something like 200bi adequate?

75 buyins seems really high, Im kind of in the middle, I don't have a job but I'm also a student and I'm using poker as a part time job and paying tuition. I agree headsup would have crazy variance, but I disagree that that playing agressively would affect the variance by that much. I think it's a myth that there is higher variance with a aggresive style of play, I would even say that if you play agressively the right way then it will decrease your variance, because you are isolating alot more and winning alot of situations where a tight player would never ever be in. I only nit up when I have less then 60 big blinds in front of me, or when im not playing well or going through a bad run of cards...... but usually I play pretty aggressively with a higher hand range then most ppl..

How long was the wait and how long did the actual game last?

no wait, bascially go up to the pit, and say you're interested in plying in the satellite once they have 10 people interested, they start up a table and everybody starts playing, the step 1, blinds go up every 10 mins, and we prob reach level 5 or 6, so about an hour SnG


also i don't agree with 30 buy-ins for casual play. that means that you would need a 6k bankroll just to play 1/2. That might be right, but i would say maybe 20. if you lose 20 buy-ins then either you on one of the sickest runs in history or you're just a bad player and shouldn't be playing poker.


i played professionally for about 8-10 months, enjoyed it, but family and ex's family were always on my case to get a job. Now that I have a full time job, i just play on weekends to make extra cash. it does take some time to get used to the limits and move up in stakes. Also 1/2 live compared to 5/10 or 10/20NL live is a lot different. A raise 3-4x BB in 1/2 will get you 8 callers, 3-4x in 5/10 or 10/20 might get you 3 or 4 callers. Probably just better players

I think 30 buyins is the standard for NL cash games. Since you rely on this as your only job I might even go a bit higher. I might even also go a bit higher if your cash game is not at 100bb max, since anything lower might result in more allin hands thus higher variance.
