This is the lowest official price on these displays that I have seen so far. They are fairly new, but they are essentially the same as the 42PQ30/20 that have been around most of the year. Less a Computer connection, 1 hdmi, and some power saver options.

Update: The 50" 50PQ12 model is also available at FS today only 11/4 for $899.

Update: Prices are in the new flyer, and so are valid until at least 11/12.

Just curious PQ wise?

This is also available at Best Buy. PM there for $689.
If you need delivery, PM at BB online and use the $50 off $500 code, if it ever starts working, to pay for the delivery.
If you can find a BB store without the PQ12 in stock, try for a PM and the Flat Panel In Stock Guarantee to get an extra $50 off and free delivery. For $639 and FD. YMMV. This will work best if the Best Buy has adjusted their price to compete with their Future Shop brothers.

To the best of my knowledge the PQ of the 42PQ60 is identical to the other LG 42" 720p displays. So IMO the PQ12 should be indistinguishable from the PQ60. Just missing those few things above, and without the cool single glass look of the 60.

that's great to hear.. I'm getting the 42PQ60 as my "free" tv from the brick. They seem to have had major issues with the regular off brand tv they usually give out so they're giving these out instead.

"Free" is good. Especially if they're financing it all for who knows how long?
Call me anal, but I always want to see how much I could get the furniture for, first, without the freeby, just to see where I stand in the deal.

Has anyone tried out this particular set with a PS3 or Xbox 360? Keeping an eye out for a quality plasma, and $700 is definitely worth considering!

I bought this TV few weeks ago when they had it for $699 and bought it only to use it with Xbox 360 and it's very nice so far. Pic quality is very good and I have not seen any issues with it. Well worth to use as a gaming TV.

I did...
I was quoted 4600 for a package at a store going out of business.. went to the brick and got them to give me a price of 5400 BUT it included a better mattress ($1000 more on the sticker price) and the tv... and I'll be able to go back and yell at them if something goes wonky.
sticker price $14,000... my price 5400 (taxes, delivery, finance all in for both numbers)

You just need to call CS by phone. If it's from a company on their list of PMable vendors they'll do it without too much trouble. If not you might have to F around a bit, and they might refuse.
By the way that coupon code(s), is not working, and BB seems to know nothing about it.

So this is my first post to this very awesome website.
As a Canadian whos lived most his life in the states I've gotten spoiled by how easy it is to find good deals; especially in the south.

I'm a student in Montreal right now and money is a major issue. However I have an xbox 360 and a 600w 5.1 speaker system. Not having a TV to match is killing me. I plan on buying a tv sometime this week and splitting it three ways with my roommates. Our max is $300 each.

So I ask you, wise RFDers, is this the best TV money (my money) can buy right now? I was previously going to buy the 42LH30 http://refurbished.ca/shop/en/tv/lcd/lg-42-lcd-1080p-fullbhdtv-42lh30. From Refurbished.ca but the whole refurbished thing is a factor.

So in the 42PQ12 vs the 42LH30 vs the awsome, much better tv deal im leaving out (please tell me if there is one lol): whos the winner?

The only thing is the 720p. Obviously the LH is better with the 1080p. So in overall picture quality if there both set to 720p for xbox 360 games and streamed 720p HD which one comes out on top? is the LH better here aswell and worth the $50 and refurbished stigma?

Thanks so much for any input!

I'd say it depends on your room and how much sun light would be hitting the TV and also if you willing to break in your plasma TV correctly.

I'd be a little concerned for you guys getting a refurb, considering that the warranty is 90 days. Either way I think that you are better off buying new, and using a credit card for the purchase to extend the warranty for an extra year for free.

When it comes to the LCD/Plasma and 1080/720p questions you are opening two pandora's boxes and will probably get wildly conflicting views.
As far as LCD/Plasma goes your choice really depends on the following questions, IMO:

What will the lighting in the room be like?

How much gaming are you planning on doing with the TV? As a percentage.

Will all the seats be in line with the screen, or will some be at a steep angle (off axis)?

How close will you be sitting to the TV?

Will you be using it to watch sports alot of time?

For the 720p/1080p question, I would say that IMO in a 42/40" screen, although not indistinguishable, the difference between a them is marginal, unless you are sitting very close. Of course all things being equal, getting
1080p would be preferable, but I would not let that one factor be the deciding aspect. A 1080p display is not always "better" than it's 720p counterpart. There are other factors that weigh in on picture quality.

Short synopsis is:

LCD - 60hz fast motion issues, brighter, better for gaming alot, no TIR, usually poorer viewing angles, matt screens better with glare.

Plasma- Better PQ overall for the $$, not as bright, no motion issues, little or no lag for gaming, Can suffer from TIR temporary image retention with long periods of static images, wide viewing angle, more reflective of bright light/glare.

I forgot to add that the Samsung LN40B530 at FS $799 today is a good LCD option and new. That's if LCD fits your circumstances and gaming isn't the most important use for the display. I believe that the LG's tend to have better input lag , than the Samsungs, when gaming as a generalization.

Thanks. I've heard conflcting view of this. I know that some people were actually able to enable this feature on the similar PQ30 model with some service menu fiddling. Even though that model isn't supposed to play DivX.

As of today the 42PQ30 and 50PQ30, the similar model with a few extra features, are available at the same prices as Future Shop. They have a PC input, an extra HDMI and a full power saving system. They are also more widely reviewed and commented on.
The 42PQ30 can be purchased at Gibby's for $699 and at 2001 Audio/Video for $695. The 50PQ30 is at Gibby's for $899. Both are in Ontario, but it should be possible to PM elsewhere, Visions, Sears. The 50PQ30 may be PMable at Best Buy for $891.

720p is actually 1280 X 720

Unfortunately this is an industry wide problem with all manufacturers claiming that their TVs with less than 1280 width are 720p.

It shouldn't be allowed.

The real question is, does it matter on a 42" screen? Especially one that is $699.
Resolution is relative to the screen size, after all. 1080p on a 65" screen is a necessity, but on a 40/42" screen it is more of a luxury, IMO.
At 8-10 feet can you or I really percieve the difference?
I agree with you, though, using 1024 x 768 rectangular pixels on the 42"
720P plasmas seems like a strange way to make a 16/9 screen, but they all do it.

It's a mistake, even the manufacturers put the wrong resolutions on their web sites for their 720p Plasmas. All the 42's are 1024x768 and all the 50's are 1365x768. From every manufacturer. Samsung has had the wrong info about the res of one of theirs all year.

I preferred PQ30 just because it has more HDMI, component and AV inputs compared to the Panasonic C1. Panny has no USB / AV and PC-VGA input and has very limited fine tuning for picture and audio compared to the PQ30. If you just watch the standard picture and do not prefer fine tuning based on movie/ games / personal preference etc then you are OK with the Panny C1.

Panasonic plasma TVs consume less power compared to LG. Don't remember exactly but if memory serves me right LG is 330W vs 150W for Panny. This Panny in question is a bare bones model.

The PQ30 is definitely better than the PQ12 if you need multiple inputs. In my opinion the PQ line which is LG's value line for plasma's is better than the Panny C1 series.

Another reason I chose LG over Panasonis was presence of service centers in my city with a bonus 2 years warranty on plasma panel compared to Panasonic's 1 year. I do not want to Ship a broken TV to Toronto or Vancouver (prepaid) for repairs if I have a claim during warranty period.

It really depends on what you value. Panasonic's rep for reliability and customer service speaks for itself.
The LG PQ's look better to me, and as PP said, have more, connections, and user adjustments to picture parameters.
The PQ's also seem a good deal brighter and more vibrant with the power savers off and the settings maxed. Although, I realize this is not how most people will use their display, this can be useful in bright rooms. That is not to say that the C1 is a bad TV by any means, it is just that, for me, picture quality overshadows reliability. I believe Costco also has their version the 42PX14 on sale for $799. This does have a PC input and some extra features, and comes with the Costco 90 day return/2 year warranty too.

BTW Costco has their version of the PQ30, the 42/50PQ20 now at $719/$909 online, and I assume $699/$899 in store. The PQ20 has all the same features as the PQ30. More than the PQ12 and 90 day return and 2 year warranty too.

Partly, but I also think that it is the general softness in retail sales. Even LCD's are selling at record low prices. $799 40" Samsung 60hz LCD's, $999 40"120hz LCD's from LG and Samsung, this week. $999 46" 60hz Samsung LCD. Etc.
