So what are places you know of or recommend for someone on a tight budget?

I know of the obvious, like Taco Bell's 2 Taco Combo, getting a hot dog from a cart, a Pizza slice plus drink, and so on.

So what are places you know of that have a combo for under 5 bucks, or at least an item of food that fills you up enough that all you need is a drink?

Depends where you want to eat.

For me, if I only had $5 for lunch (probably a little more like $6 would be safer) I'd go to chinese food courts or some cheap indian places (Sweet India by the airport is my current favourite).

Small McD chicken burger $1.46
Small fries $1.46
Drink $1+

Stock up on KFC tuesday specials - I put a bunch in the freezer, 15 minutes in oven at 400 deg and I'm ok too.

$1 for 5 samosas from Samosa King

I think Wendy has $3.99 combos, but never tried them.

Wonton with noodles in Chinese food courts = about $3.99

3 bbq pork buns from Asian supermarket = $2 approx (60c each)

Wendy's has value combo's for $3.99. You can substitute Fries for baked potato and drink for a smoothie. But be advised you won't be full.

Cheapest (and most decent IMO) combo's are at chinese food courts.

As others have said, Chinese food courts are the best place

Often, you can get a combo with a drink for $5 or a bit over that, and feel very full

Hot dog and pop - Costco $1.99

That is a large 1/4 lb beef dog, and a refillable drink.
Two shoppers buying two of those, plus a poutine at $4.50, and you can handle the crowds!

You can also swap for a chili, and I get pretty full after eating it, but of course I'm not a guy ;)

pretty tough, everything has raised, mcdonald combo comes to 4.97 and you won't be full, wend is 4.27, but they made the drink to small size, if you want medium size, the price is like 5.74....

For the next week, you can get a pasta for 99 cents. So 2x pasta(its really not alot) plus a kids meal(5x meatballs or 1x piece of fish, plus small side of fries/potatoes/veggies) and a fountain pop. That's like, $4.18 lol.

Or Monday + Tuesdays, after 5pm, 15 piece meatballs with side of fries/potatoes/veggies, and add a $1 fountain pop, $4.19 I think.

There is a HK/Chinese style restaurant at Kennedy and Denison(used to be Shanghai restaurant) that have some of the cheapest food+COLD drink combo during their 2-5pm afternoon tea session 7 days a week. Cheapest is $1.99(toast with condensed milk) and most expensive is $5.99(Bake seafood rice pork chop rice)+ you can get a special cold drink(i.e., red bean ice drink, pineapple ice drink) at no extra charge! The dishes aren't small either and their afternoon tea menu is actually quite extensive.

I went with a friend once. I ordered satay beef macaroni in soup and he ordered fried pork chop with fries and we also ordered 2 cold drinks it came to $5.98 for 2 person + tax + tips...it was only $7.50..LOL:D

They also have some cheap food on their regular menu too. Example: fish ball vermicelli in soup is $2.50!

Warden and Sheppard. There's a little mom and pop Chinese restaurant that has lunch deals for $4.29 (last time I went) and it includes a soup of the day (russian borsh, cream of corn), main dish (a selection of 5 dishes) and a drink (tea or coffee). Portions are quite big for its size and you could get full pretty quickly.

imo meals including drinks aren't that good of a value if you think about it.. they make the most money off the fries & drink... if im saving up i would just buy two BK king deal burgers ($1.99x2) and just drink water.. cheaper than buying the actual meal plus you will be more full as well.. i also do the same with McD (Mcdouble $1.39x3) or KFC toonie tuesdays as mentioned above if I want my fast food fix...

Lots of Chinese food courts would offer you a soup, drink and main course for less than $5 and after taxes too.

Golden Seven but the outside sign says GG. Here is the kicker. In Chinese the name is Gao Chung Teen, as in the number 9.

100% truth.

Unless they changed...

European Quality Meats and Sausages - 176 Baldwin St Toronto, ON M5T 1L8
They sell a nice thick burger (half an inch), fries and a soft drink for $3.99. You can also get some sausages for a combo for under $5.

And their fast food counter is operating within the deli, so you know it's much better beef than other fast food chains.

El Gordo's Fine Food - 214 Augusta Ave, Toronto, ON M5T 2L6
Originally a butcher shop, they expanded to sell savory baked empanadas for about $2.50-$3 each, filled with various meats and spices (there are like 20 different kinds you can choose). They also have a kimchi flavoured empanada, haven't tried that one yet.

Kom Jug Yuen - 371 Spadina Ave Toronto, ON M5T 2G3
Best BBQ Pork (Cha Siu) and rice in downtown Chinatown, as far as I know! $3.99 + tax. You can dine in a get a free soup to sip on, but be kind and give a decent tip. (Sort of makes it above $5).

Patty King - 187 Baldwin St Toronto, ON M5T 1M1
Get some freshly fried (or baked?) patties or doubles here. I really like the lamb patties. They're about $1.50 each I think. I'm quite certain you can get 2 patties and a drink for under $5.

Mother's Dumplings - 79 Huron St Toronto, ON M5T 2A8
Again, sorry to break the $5 limit, but you can get 12 cooked piece of Northern Chinese-style dumpling (not the Cantonese crap, IMO) for $5.50 + tax. They were rated for best $5 lunch in 205 by NOW magazine, but I can't see their lunch menu, if they have one that is. I usually buy a bag of frozen dumplings and just boil them at home for dinner if I've got nothing available, really hits the spot with spicy chili sauce and/or the Chinese black/dark vinegar (Cantonese: Jeet Cho, about $3 to $4 per bottle).

Although it's over $5, I find most of the food court vendors in First Markham place give a free drink or soup one way or another.

These are all good choices.

I guess the general consensus is the food courts in Chinatown, but not so much for fast food anymore?

For the record, what I know of:

Pizza Pizza: Slice and a Pop $3.49
KFC: Toonie Tuesday, 2 Pieces and Fries $2.89
241 Pizza: Two Slices anda Pop, from $3.50-$4.50 depending on location
Taco Bell: 2 Taco Combo, just under $5.00
Junior Chicken Combo: Sandwich, Fries, Drink, $4.93, a shame the raised the prices
Ikea: Hot Dogs $0.50, Drink $1.00 (Like someone mentioned above)

fail... they've raised their daily deal prices to $4.29 and now we have to pay 2 taxes to the darn gov't...

+1 for wendy's... i think they're the only ones left with $3.99 combos... and it's $3.99 every day of the week :cheesygri

chinese food courts have gotten more expensive... hard to find $3.99 combos... most come to ~$5

If you are on a tight budget then you should not be going out to eat!

My lunch of 2 pieces of fruit and a meat sandwich and a can of pop costs about $3 per day all told and I also get a lot of discounts on it due to using MBNA Smart Cash 5% cash back at the grocery store where I get the ingredients!

I tried the Wendy's 3.99 meal and boy it really doesn't fill you up. And they changed the size of the drink and fries, as least to me, I don't eat Wendy's often.

At least Burger King's King Deal has a regular size fries and drink. That 4.29 deal does sort of fill you up, not bad.
