There is a new movie out called The Box. Essentially, you push a button in a box which gives you $1 million dollars but someone who you do not know dies.

The question is ... would you do it?

Despite the fact that I am an ugly, selfish, pathetic (and various other names that I have been called by certain members around here), I just couldnt do it. Not a chance. Not even for $100 million.

What say you, folks? Not about me ... about the question.

Is it just me or is 1 million not really that much money any more...When the avg house in Toronto being half a million...its not like having a million will put you on easy street...sure it helps out the average perosn a lot...but when the avg CEO or professional sports play making a few million a year...how is a million worth killing for.

I guess its all relative. If you are a single mom with two kids working at Tim Hortons, $1mil is a crap ton of money. That is definitely easy street for that person.

But, if I put myself in that situation, with our household income as it is, $1m isnt that much money at all.

But is that even the point? What if it was $50mil? Would you do it then?

I thought the premise of the movie was that it was someone "random"? It could turn out being anyone whether you know them or not. Then it turns out being someone they do know and care about.

And I wouldn't. The value of life is infinitely greater than money.

Don't know how this movie is gonna turn out. The guy made Donnie Darko so hopefully his new one is good.

I'd hammer on that button about 7 billion times until everyone I didn't know was dead, including the person who gave me the box.

Have you seen his other movie, Southland Tales? Man, that was a bad movie.

I remember seeing a Twilight Zone episode many many years ago with the same premise.

To be interesting, it can't be that linear and straight forward. The person you don't know somehow has a connection to you. Like in a few years he'll be the organ donor that ultimately saves your life.

To answer the question at face value, I think many people would push it. Money trumps many things in this world and in particular, this morally corrupted society.

Is this the movie:

i say yes right now (soooo much money!) but if i was faced with that in real life it definitely wouldn't be as easy.

I would probably sell the box for $500,000 to someone else.

It's based on the same short story from writer Richard Matheson ( I Am Legend).

I'm excited to see how this plays out.

Some interesting responses guys. Thank you.

The reason I asked on here was because I was talking with a couple of friends and someone brought it up at random. So, I thought it would be a good off topic / entertainment-y type of thread that would likely not get THAT many bashing flames.

I think it could be the point. 1M, no probably not. 50M, yup in a heartbeat...and it wouldnt matter to me who it ended up being.

In this liberal society we all like to thoink life is precious and should be preserved at any cost, but that doesnt hold up to reality.
Look at healthcare costs that we all contribute to...what if (completely hypthetical) a person had a strange new disease and keepiong them alive would cost the system 1M a year, is it worth it? Perhaps...But what if it was 50M per year? Not so sure. Then add other variables such as what if this person were 90yrs old? Or in a prison for having killed someone? Or conversely, a valued genius, or peace-making world leader?

I say you can put a price on life. And everyones price and value is different. Theres people in extremely impoverished countries that wouldnt value yours if it meant $100. in their pocket.

To me, a more interesting question is, if you had to choose between 2 people living who would it be: the person you love most dearly (but is a nobody like yourself), or another person who you perceive as having the greatest value to the world or at least your society...perhaps a religious leader, or world leader, scientist, porn star etc.
That is IMO a better test of selfishness/selfessness.

Or because Hollywood loves money so much, what if by pressing the button in the box you save a person, but lose everything you own? How many would do it? I doubt very many. Heck, we know even the so-called celeb philanthropists like Bono and Geldof wouldnt do it, and their personal $ could better millions of people.

I agree with ya. Even though I'm more selfish and materialist than I wish to believe, the guilt in knowing I directly caused someone's death would taint the million from me, and I would forever be haunted by that fact for the rest of my life. Thus... Clean Conscience>$1(00000...) million

My question for the box is, how do I know this is actually going to kill someone if I push the button? Maybe the box is lying to you?

Is there some kind of confirmation like, you've killed so and so? So you can check?
