Skype over 3G ristricted in Canada, what about other voip services

My Fido agreement is up to renewal this month and as I am still thinking of plans, I have voip on my head.

I had a friend who tried to use Skype over Iphone but ended up with a message:
"Skype calls over 3G networks are currently not allowed due to contractual restrictions"

My question is: do you think I can still use Voip/sip. I don't really care about Skype, but rather interested in using a Windows or Android based cellphone to use a Betamax service for example.

I don't want to end subscribing to a data plan and buying a phone at the advantage of my daytime minutes only to discover it did not work.

Skype is restricted over 3G on the iPhone--unless you jailbreak the phone. Then you can install some tweaks like 3G Unrestrictor and make calls over your data plan! That's what I do and it's amazing.

You subscribe to a Skype monthly plan for $3/month, and you can call Canada/USA unlimited. Add SkypeOut credit, and you get caller ID instead of "Unknown". Full details are here (http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/tips-tricks/how-to-use-skype-over-3g-on-your-iphone/).

i wonder what's average bandwidth usage of skype voice chat? How many minutes you could talk with, say, 500mb data plan?

I am not really a fan of iphone and the reason I would like to use Betamax is for regular calls to outside USA and Canada which are so cheap in Betamax as opposed to Skype. Even Skype's other international plans do not compare.
