View Full Version : Dell 2209WA - why is it so ugly?

I'm having the issue with the yellow band or w/e across the bottom and top portion of the screen. There's a yellow band that runs on the bottom of the screen about a cm or so high, and on the top as well, but on the top it stops on both sides about an inch away from the edge. It's more noticeable on the bottom and the yellowish tint goes up almost half way up the screen.

I requested a replacement which arrived today, but the replacement is no different, i would say it's worse.

Looks like someone plssed on my monitor - and that's exactly how i explained it to customer service!

Now I don't have calibration software but I did try and calibrate it as best I can, which turned out ok I guess. Both monitors came with the grays having a green tint to them but I resolved that on the original while the replacement still has the green tint, so I would say the original monitor is better calibrated. Putting that aside, the yellowish colors are still present.

Would proper calibration software even remedy the yellow stains or is this just a QC issue I'm having?

As I scroll through the pages here on RFD you can see the change from yellow to white...the monitor definitely does have better colors but the pee stains are so annoying. And if you were to edit a photo, only the dead center middle of the screen would be usable right now. >:(

For everyone else who recently bought this monitor, is this normal?

Please refrain from urinating on your monitor.

If it bothers you that much, sell it and get another monitor. If both of them have the problem then it's probably standard on all 2209WAs. Here's what a quick google search found: http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19258027/19438924.aspx

Hey arvkit,

I have the exact SAME issue. I requested a replacement and got another monitor that was more or less the same issue.

I bought into all the 2209wa hype too when it was $219 and now I'm contemplated just returning it.

The customer service rep said that that's how the monitor was and he didn't really see anything wrong with it.

Is this really a QC issue? I can't believe it's like this for everyone else, you see hundreds of people raving about this in the hardforums...

You must have got the glossy screen, you see it is not the monitor that is ugly it is what is in the reflection that is ugly.

Mine is sort of like that, but it's nothing too serious. I don't really notice it unless I'm consciously looking for it.

IPS > PVA in pretty much everything except contrast (black levels).

guess it depends on the type of IPS panel

the 2209WA doesn't seem all that great with the yellow tinting despite superior IPS technology

maybe that's why some forms of IPS have something to make "whites look more natural"

Maybe it's a new batch of 2209wa's that Dell has received from their 3rd party manufacturer.

I got mine about 8 months ago and it's spot on....very little calibration needed. In fact the only calibration I did was to reduce the brightness to 0...yes that's right...0....and even that's too bright sometimes. But other than that, I haven't noticed any of these yellow band issues with my monitor.

The tinting is due to uneven backlight, not the panel itself.

Adjust the RGB values before you adjust brightness. You can reduce brightness by reducing the RGB values uniformly. Once you get it to within an acceptable range, adjust the brightness setting.

+1

I can't say anything about the ones shipped last month but the one I got back in January was top notch as well. No "piss" on it :P
