1. You sure its "Mercury" (planet/mythological figure) and not mercury (element)?
2. How hard is it to look up information on Mercury via Google or, hell, Wikipedia? A quick search will answer your question. Can't be that hard, now.

How does this interpretation come about?
Thermometers are filled with mercury, and that changes all the time with the temperature. When you say someone is mercurial it means they tend to be moody.
