Top Tier Status: Membership level. Aeroplan is the base level. As you fly more often, with more status miles, you will be upgrade to Aeroplan Prestege, Aeroplan Elite, and Aeroplan Super Elite.
Status Miles: Based on actual distance flown in a year on eligible Star Alliance carriers. Top tier status is based on Status Miles in a year. This number resets every year.
Flight Segments: The amount of eligible Star Alliance one way flights you have flown and recorded under your Aeroplan Account. This number also resets every year.

Mileage balance is the amount of miles you have to spend. you can browse their website to purchase items or use it for travel. i think the cheapest flight you can get is 20,000 round trip. you can also shop online for flights all at www.aeroplan.ca (http://www.aeroplan.ca)
Top tier status is the level of rewards you are at. aeroplan is the base. next is prestige, then elite, then superelite. which each increased level (based on segments/status miles earned in a calendar year) you gain more rewards and earn additional miles faster in subsequent years.
AC status miles are miles you have flown on AC status flights.
AC flight segments are the number of flights you have been on, where each flight is one takeoff and one landing. for example, a flight from Toronto to vancouver is one segment, but if you stop in Clagary on the way, that is two segments.
It currently takes the following status miles OR segments to get to the following levels
Prestige - 25,000 status miles or 35 segments
Elite - 35,000 status miles or 50 segments
Super elite - 100,000 status miles of 95 segments
status miles are based on the actual distance of each flight in miles.
some things you could get with your miles:
3 round trip tickets from Eastern Canada to Hawaii (I just bought 4 in July for 40,000 miles each) approximate cost of each ticket would be $2,000. I have already flown once to hawaii on miles. it is a great value, although you are reguired to pay taxes and airport fees, but it is only about $100 per ticket. small price to pay for free flights to paradise.
$500 gift card to numerous stores for 55,000-65,000. stay away from any electronics being sold on aeroplan site as most are overpriced. better to get a FS gift card (65,000 miles for $500) and buy it there.

Pretty good attempt to summarize the program but here are a few corrections:
1) Lowest number of Aeroplan points for a flight is 15,000. Generally, these are for adjacent province/state flights, such as Toronto-Montreal.
2) Even though the email speaks of "Air Canada Status Miles" and "Air Canada Segments", the numbers refer to the total status miles earned and segments flown on Star Alliance airlines (incl. Air Canada).
3) Not all fares are eligible for status miles and/or segments - AC's domestic Tango fares are excluded. A tango fare going Toronto-Calgary-Vancouver is eligible for zero status miles and zero segments.
4) For most economy fares (excluding AC's domestic Tango fares) and discounted business class fares, status miles are based on the actual distance of each flight in miles. For a full business class fare (J), the class of service bonus counts towards status miles as well.

I show on the aeroplan site, it only takes 25 flight segments for prestige. But then I am at 26 and don't show qualified yet. Not sure how long it takes for that to change, not that it matters much anyway since prestige means very little.

There is no 'instant' prestige, which means that your status will change at the beginning of the next qualifying year (Mar 2010).

They may send you a letter in the next month or so upgrading you to Prestige for the remainder of the year (plus a few coupons) and then of course, you will be prestige next year.

This is incorrect. As HighFlyer points out, there is no "instant Prestige"... need to wait till March 1, 2010.

Strange since my boss a few months back just got enough for the prestige level and it showed on the next ticket plus he received the coupons in the mail. Good for the rest of this year and next.
Not that I really care if I get it till March since what does it really mean...nothing at all. I get a little P instead of an A on my ticket.

Hmm, that is interesting. AP's website talks about early E and SE qualification only: http://www1.aeroplan.com/help.do.
Actually, you may want to care if you have P early... perhaps you can use the SWU to upgrade and you may get 25% bonus AP points for flying AC metal.

A follow-up question to Aeroplan experts out there.
By the end of this year, I will be just 1,000 pts shy of 25,000 pts for Prestige from all the flights in 2009.
Is it possible to tell them that I am flying on Jan 1, 2010 and that flight segment will put me over the 25k (even though it's lapsed into the next year already)?
Thanks in advance.

I (and a few friends) must be special then. I have been sent a letters since I have been a member and the latest time was 2 years ago, informing me I had met criteria for the next level and here is a comp for the rest of the term as well as some coupons. I have quite a few colleagues who also have had this happen.

No, that will not work. If you are 100 status miles short, they will not just upgrade you. You will need to take a few flights unfortunately. If Prestige is important to you, try a mileage run. Find a cheap multi city route and get the points. I must say though, outside of the lounge pass, you will never get much use out of prestige level benifits.

When traveling on US carriers such as US airways, Continental or United. With a Star Alliance silver card, you can have your bags checked for free.
I guess that may help if you travel to the US a lot.

That is interesting to know - thanks for that.
Also agree that AP will not be kind enough to characterize the Jan 1 2010 flight to 2009... though it has been rumoured that AP has a "cushion" so that someone who is short a few miles may make it to the threshold - but it is not a hard and fast rule which can be relied on. A mileage run to get Prestige is probably hardly worth the effort.

Previously, if you're short 5% of the required status miles, you would be given the status. That is, 23750 miles for Prestige. But of course, don't count on it.
Prestige is useless in my opinion!! Elite is a lot better but not that much harder to attain.
