Price fixing comes to mind! Is that allowed in Canada?
Only if there's collusion (i.e. they sit down and agree not to beat each others price), the three of them can basically match each others prices without concern so long as they don't discuss it with each other.
Bell and Telus don't need to beat Rogers horrendous prices either, the iPhone is still selling incredibly well (you still can't order one off Rogers website thanks to low stock levels) and Bell/Telus have the better network, so most people will gravitate towards them.
What will hopefully happen is that Rogers will see their market share on the iPhone slipping quickly and drop their price to be more competitive, and it'll work down from there.

lol @ the data plan for the iphone.
Unlike the blackberry, iPhone doesn't compress data. Those 500MB were originally meant for blackberry and you will use at least 4x that on the iPhone.
I wonder if Rogers still has the 30$ for 6GB data. That makes much more sense and a hell of a lot cheaper. Plus tethering.
Btw, any news on Bell incorporating their scam fees into the basic package?

Hey there. I'm an existing Bell Mobility user as well (yes I know... shame) and I was wondering if anybody knew how this hardware upgrade process works.
I currently have a really crappy Moto KRZR on the CDMA network with Bell. When the HSPA network launches, how would I go about getting a new HSPA-compatible phone to work on their network? Will they charge me a fortune just to get a "SIM" card out of them for me to put into a phone I buy from elsewhere? Also, let's say I bought an unlocked HSPA phone, will it work with Bell? Or would I have to do that $75 thing?
EDIT:
My contract is not due until sometime in August next year. I'm willing to pay some sort of fee if I need to, because this phone is driving me nuts.

Looks like Bell pay enough dough to samsung to keep the exclusive right. Keep an eye on the Buy/sell/trade forum and see if there are any resale, and unlock em' for Telus. (I don't even know if unlocking is needed, after all, they use the same network anyway)

500mb is actually plenty for most.. i'm on my iphone all day, twitter, surfing, email, some youtube and downloading..i've never gone over 500mb yet...i downgraded from 6gig to a 500mb value plan..
anyway if you need to tether or do internet radio streaming you would need 1gig plus... otherwise 500 will cover about 95% of users imo.

It might be difficult for anyone to provide a definitive answer since the phones have not been released to the public. I intend to get an Omnia II or iPhone on Nov 4. Since I'll be receiving a Bell sim, I'm going to try the Bell sim on a Rogers/Fido iPhone to see if it will work on the Bell network. I'll also try the Bell phone with my Rogers sim to see what happens.

Interesting, and thanks for the reply. How do you get the Bell sim btw? I suppose that was my real question, because I really want to be able to move onto a better phone such as the Omnia II or something similar.
EDIT: Sorry, I just realized that Omnia II will be exclusive to Bell, and I suppose that's how you will be getting a SIM card (along with the newly purchased phone).
How would I be able to get a SIM card without purchasing an actual HSPA-compatable phone FROM Bell?

When you have your new unlocked HSPA phone, you can call Bell and upgrade to Customer Owned Equipment (aka your own phone). Bell will provide you with all necessary equipment (SIM) to keep you service line alive. (They can probably charge you for the SIM card)

Cool. Will I have to change my existing plan? I'm on a semi-decent retentions plan that I don't want to lose. If I upgrade to an HSPA phone, they won't require me to change my plan will they? (I'm not expecting any real answer out of this since you probably don't work for them, but any sort of speculation would be great)

Just wondering if Bell offers their crippled firmware mods on all their phones. At work we bought the software and cable to program all our phones. We did it to populate all the phones with all the number of other employees and suppliers and such.
We also wanted to put on ring tones and backgrounds. Then we learned that it is not possible because Bell has modded the firmware so that the only way to get them is to download them. From what I've read the same phone by any other carrier would have been possible to transfer anything we wanted.

did you miss the part where it said the new hspa+ network covers 93% of cdn population, coverage nearly anywhere that has cdma currently?
anyway, if you do go out of coverage, you lose signal. most likely if you were on rogers there wont be any 2g coverage in those areas anyway to fall back on

Otherwise, it's a world of the same.

There are no "all in" plan for $50 with Verizon
You obviously only watch Canadian TV, unlike anyone that lives in a border city and becomes Americanized....Watch a US network and see the Verizon commercial for yourself.....
Nationwide unlimited text and talk...anywhere in North America, to anyone on any network!!!!
My cousin has the plan....bought the phone and plan in the US cuz she lives there, and then brought it here and gave it to her parents so now they just pay the $50 and talk anytime with no long distance or airtime charges, would be great if all you did was make outgoing calls and or everyone in the world had this plan....As in this case they can call each other and they can call anyone they want in NA and still be in plan, but anyone who calls them pays normal ld rates and stuff, unless they have this plan or one like it I guess.

That is terrible. It comes to $52.70 with all of the fees. Fido has a way better "deal" that is really just their basic plans!
Fido's $25 voice + $25 data
» 36 month contract
» 100 Minutes (billed by the SECOND ie: a 2 second call uses 2 seconds not 1 minute and a 3:03 minute call uses 3:03 minutes not 4 minutes)
» Unlimited Evenings/Weekends @ 7PM
» Unlimited texting nationwide (not just 5 people)
» Unlimited incoming texts worldwide
» 500 mb Data
» Wi-Fi unlimited at Rogers/Fido hotspots
» No other fees like SAF, etc.
In my opinion Fido's $50 plan destroys Bell's $52.70 plan mainly due to unlimited texting and per-second billing.

[QUOTE=temporary user;9691898]lol @ the data plan for the iphone.

I just left Bell for home phone and internet. What I find is they have delusions of Grandeur, at least with their TV and it looks like with their HSPA and Iphone as well.
Basically Bell is saying we are so much more better that you should be honured to pay more for our excelent product. Don't fall for it.

gives me a compelling reason to wait a year since they're holding the loyalty credit until the end of the contract term. either that or jump over to fido.

Is that the "North America Plan" from Verizon? How many daytime minutes do you get? I have a similar plan from AT&T that i've been using for years now. The plan is no longer offered, but i'm one of the lucky few still using it (grandfathered). The only catch is that living here in Canada, most ppl actually cannot call me since it costs them LD charge (that too international). Kinda sucks, I know.

My current contract with bell ends in 2 weeks, and they've offered me a pretty decent retention plan (voice only) if i sign another term with them that works out to about $30/month + GST/PST....
I'm thinking if I add a $25 data plan(500mb) to this retention plan that puts me at at a $55 voice and data plan ($30 voice +$25 data), so should i not get the Iphone for $99?? The requirement to get a $99 Iphone is to sign a 3 year agreement with a voice/data plan of at least $45 which i will be doing... I think I'll call Bell up and ask them if this would work...

To the OP: A very thorough post, thanks, I appreciate the effort... but I, like many RFDers, get ENRAGED by hidden fees.
There is no $45 plan. There is a $52.70 plan, etc.
In your post you could state that $7.70 of that fee is as SAF, and explicitly mention that Voice Mail / Call Display will set you back $15 a month more.
Again, the picture of the ice-encrusted SUV.

Considering this discussion:
http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=32510
Every minute consumes about ~ 0,5 MB of bandwidth (I believe it should be less).
So 500MB should give you at least 1000min if you don't use it for anything else.

I'm wondering how this new 3G HDSPA+ network and phones will work on Bell.
Before, all handsets were CDMA. So, if you buy a new bell iPhone, does that mean you only have voice service in the 3G areas?
How can you use the phone on the old CDMA network in remote areas?

Pray tell, exactly who in the Bell board of directors or executive are you blackmailing, and exactly what is it that you know about them (a predilection for sex with animals perhaps?) where they would give you this deal?
THIS is EXACTLY PROOF of the fact that everyone in the COUNTRY is being RIPPED OFF by the Telcos. They are NOT offering this deal at a "loss" so WHY ISN'T EVERYONE ABLE TO GET THIS KIND OF PRICING?
And I seriously doubt that Bell will let you get the iPhone, keeping this deal, and just adding a data plan to it. At least not in the short term... but your rate plan is proof that perhaps they aren't out to abuse ALL their customers... just MOST of them... so you might be able to leverage your "information" for a good price on a data add-on. :-)

As previous poster noted, I wasn't YELLING at the poster... I'm "railing at the powers that be" at the Telcos that somehow offer individuals (that happen to be part of some "group" called a "corporation") a price that is half or less than that of the average independant citizen... note that the individual user is paying their fee directly, it's not like the 'corporation' is paying the bulk rate for the masses... so all the costs of doing business with individuals (support, billing, acct. mgmt, etc.) is still mostly the same as for individuals... yet this person is given a deal that is actually COMPETITIVE with what is offered in other countries.
And what is the CRTC doing? Reversing all the mandated openness so the Telcos can increase their profits even more. harumph

do u need to have a data plan with the iphone,
right now i use virgin mobile 100$ a year and have a home phone wondering if i could just get and iphone with a good voice plan and drop my 2 cell
and my work gives me this plan with bell but dont know if i can get it with the iphone:
250 min
unlimited evening weekend (start at 18h)
call display and voice mail
3 way calling
call waiting
long distance 0,10 min in canada and 0,20 in usa
for 20 a month+ 7,7 access fee.
i pay 30 a month for my in line phone and dont use it that much because I'm most of the time at work or at friends place. but if im getting a cell better get an iphone... since i need a new mp3 player (more i need an mp3 player)
soo is it possible to add a dataplan to an existing plan ?

Yes, the new iPhone firmware allows them to track tethering data separately. But if your phone is jailbroken (not possible for Bell/Telus iPhone, at least not yet), then you don't need to worry. If they start charging for tethering, you can just use 3rd party app such as PDANet or MyWi, and Rogers/Fido would not know if you are using tethering or not.

Just in case any of you guys are interested in getting Fido to try to "match" the new Bell plans, I phoned a Fido sales rep, and they said that they just got an email saying they will not match for the following reasons:
a) Bell's network is new and they expect that Bell will have a lot of problems in the next year
b) Fido's is per-second billing
c) some other minor Bell-versus-Fido reasons

This is almost the same as Rogers except you get to be on HSPA network and free wireless at Starbucks. The HSPA network isn't that big of a deal because the iPhone can't even go at 21mbps. Rogers is 7mbps and that's good enough for the iPhone. The difference is if you travel. Bell has HSPA support for almost all cities in Canada. Rogers 7mbps has very little coverage.
About contract vs no contract, it's a better deal if you go for a contract. You get a better plan from Bell if you go on contract. If you want to cancel and switch to another carrier, then all Bell charges you is what you still owe for the phone. They're basically making you buy out the phone as if you never went on contract. This is pretty much the same with most carriers.

The Bell agent told me I can't purchase iPhone with SmartPhone 45 plan. However, it sounds you can navigate your way through this barrier?
Thanks

I was wondering if you can stay with Teluses "Talk" plan (unlimited local calls) with an Iphone? I have been with Telus for 8 years and never received a phone from them. After reading this I have this feeling that I am going to try and get a 3GS for $199 and they are going to tell me my talk Halifax plan can't be used on it.

Hi everyone,
I was waiting for the iphone to come out on Bell for the past couple of weeks. Ordered it yesterday via my corporate plan(plan lets you get new hardware every year.) It arrived today, and, the best part? I confirmed with the Bell people, I get unlimited data for 43$. Stoked! So if you have corporate account deff check it out.
It's still steep but at least it's unlimited!

Is that $43 just for the data? Is a corp voice plan much cheaper than a consumer plan? On a corp plan, do they bill the employer or the subscriber?

When did this country move to 3years being a normal plan, let alone with the Iphone where it's mandatory. Ridiculous.
I thought it was standard in Canada for contracts to be 3 years, which is ridiculous obviously.
I was also comparing how much we pay here for an iPhone with contract compared to Europe. It's about twice as much.
Cost here for the cheapest deal is:
$99 (iPhone 3G 8GB), $199 (iPhone 3GS 16GB), and $299 (iPhone 3GS 32GB):
+
Basic package: ($45 + $7.70) x 36 = $1897.20
So it's around $2k just for the old iPhone

I'm sorry if this has been posted...
I was looking at the iphone plans (this may apply to all plans, but I don't think so) and came across this interesting little bit of info:
Airtime charges (and long distance charges, if applicable) apply (a) for calls you make, from the time you press "Send" until you press "End" or otherwise disconnect your call; and (b) for calls you receive, from the moment the calling party initiates the call, including ring time, until you press "End" or otherwise disconnect the call.

I got the 16gb 3gs iphone. A friend of mine has the previous generation and is blown away by how much faster mine is :-)
I went to the Bell Website and I found my plan in my Bell profile listed as Unltd Data $60. So I guess the corporate discount is $18 bux and that the $60 unlimited is available to everyone.

Considering this discussion:
http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=32510
Every minute consumes about ~ 0,5 MB of bandwidth (I believe it should be less).
So 500MB should give you at least 1000min if you don't use it for anything else.
Can you use the Skype app while you are on WiFi?
How can you use the phone on the old CDMA network in remote areas?
Bell Canada says they have HSPA 3G coverage alongside their existing CDMA installations so I guess you get the same coverage already with their new 3G smartphones like your old Bell CDMA phone. We shall see.
However, I wonder if the Bell (and Telus) iPhone can roam on Rogers network or not. Anyone?
And, no iPhone works on CDMA... at least not yet (rumors say Apple is making a dual UMTS/CDMA iPhone for Verizon)
Let me get this right.... If I buy an iphone from Bell, they will provide me with the legit unlock code for $75? I know that it can be unlocked for free via 3rd party tools, but by getting the code, it means not having to worry about future updates, warranty, etc...
Anyone with more details? Thanks! If I can pay $75 to unlock it, hassle free, I will. It will be quite useful when I'm traveling: just pick up a local cheap pay-to-go SIM and I'm set. No need to pay those horrendous roaming charges :D But then I will have to sign up with Bell >:(

Spoke to Bell yesterday for the sake of seeing what I could get and want to know if this is a good plan or not, though I don't think it is.
My account history with them is since '05 and I now have three accounts, and will be adding one in the next month to bring it up to four.
Anyhow, this is what was offered to me, please comment:
200 daytime minutes
1000 incoming minutes
early 6pm - 8pm calling
voice mail + caller id
100 long distance minutes
250 txt msgs/unlimited incoming
500mb plan
fav5 local only
total = $62 total (including SAF)
I'll be able to get the hardware upgrade as well for $99/$199/$299. I was told by the rep to call even closer to the date of my contract expiring (two of the three I have expire in the next 8 weeks while the third expires in March). He was surprised to find that Telus does not have a SAF anymore while Rogers has reduced their charge; regardless, he wouldn't reduce the $62 by $7.95.

The new iPhones from Apple/Robelus contain the new bootrom and are currently software unlockable but need to be rebooted with a computer should it reach 0% battery or suffer a crash. They cannot be unlocked by Bell and they should note that.
$75 is a joke, there are a few reputable online CDN unlocking services for a fraction of the price that will unlock your HSDPA capable phone such as:
http://www.mobileincanada.com/?l=en&u=all
... which I personally used for my w810i (not HSDPA usable) during the $5 promo RFD thread.

Picked up my 16GB 3GS Friday night and have no problem with voice service although txt messaging did not work right away; rep noted there queue was backed up so it might be awhile until data starts working (strangely data worked right away). The 3G icon switches to wireless when I'm at home however but obviously that is for data as the phone still works.
I would try customer service as from previous experince they sometimes do not get the plans correct when upgrading.

I went to the other Bell store and they guy there did it for me without problems.
The 16GB 3GS was $699 - $300 (bell promo) - $150 (my HW upgrade credit) = $249.00
My corp. voice plan is
250mins day
Unlmtd. Nights & Wknds 6pm-8am

Call Display & VM
Include Sys. Access and 911 fee.
Data ($30 - 20% corp. discount = $24)

Yes, it is on an iPhone plan. When I originally called, the first rep said that you can't use the iPhone on different smartphone plans, yet when I called again, the rep--maybe because I do have three accounts, who knows--said it was possible. I even confirmed four different times that it was in fact unlimited data for the iPhone.
Honestly, I didn't have to work as hard as I thought I was going to in order to get the plan. I find that negotiating for a better plan always depends on the rep you get.

I would say that is a good deal. I am new to RFD, but my plan is similar...
I was a subscriber to Bell internet, sat, and cell.. Now cell, and Sat (Internet didn't work out)
My plan is
350 min + 150 bonus min
unl @6
Nationwide 5
unlimited data
visual voice mail
call display
unlimited text
3 way calling ect.
I called in to correct the voicemail (was not visual), and the bell rep said I was not suppose to have unlimited data, because of the iphone. I insisted that it is what the retention agent gave me (1 day before iPhone release), and they did not change my plan. My plan is 61.70 with SAF, 911 Fee, and Taxes all in. I think my plan is decent. There is room for improvement, but for a new customer (Bell sat, phone and internet (within 5 years)) I do not tbink the plan is too bad.

CDMA and HSPA (3.5G evolution from GSM) are 2 different network technologies. There is currently no handsets offered by Bell to support both technologies at the same time.
I'm wondering how this new 3G HDSPA+ network and phones will work on Bell.
Before, all handsets were CDMA. So, if you buy a new bell iPhone, does that mean you only have voice service in the 3G areas?
How can you use the phone on the old CDMA network in remote areas?

Yes, you're wrong. Cydia closes like any other app. You can install/run backgrounder for Skype, but there's no noticeable battery loss with a JB.

Kenny
No. They run on difference frequency. However, it all depends on what model of phone you buy. If you see 2100mhz 3G as the supporting 3G frequency, NO. The phone needs to have 850 & 1900mhz as 3G band to work here in North America.
These are known as 3.5G - HSDPA, HSUPA and HSPA+.
The "D" stands for Downlink, it means download can reach up to 21Mbps
The "U" stands for Uplink, it means upload can reach up to 5.76Mbps
The "+" means both D & U speed are achieved. on Bell & Telus's network, it can download up to 21Mbps, while uploads up to 5.76Mbps.
If you have a HSPA+ compatible device, it will be backward compatible to either 3G, HSDPA or HSUPA whenever the coverage is available. Fact is, no phone at the moment supports HSPA+, except data cards.
If this helps you understand a little.

I agree. It is kind of high, especially for only 500mb of data. Ask for 1gb and to bring it down to $60. From what I hear as well, Bell is dropping their SAF on the 20th of November (to coincide with Telus and Rogers' reduced equivalent GRR--Government Regulatory Recovery--fee). I suggest maybe waiting 'till then to at least see if the SAF is dropped? If it's just a rumour then you would not have wasted a lot of time in waiting since Friday is coming up quick.
Also, with regards to your plan, ask for nationwide calling in your fav5.
