Rogers and Bell are working together very well with the help of the crtc to ensure Canada will be the worst of all industrialized countries when it comes to internet connectivity.

I have personally watched the arch. I climbed from a 2400 baud modem to a 9meg unlimited cable connection for $40/month which was the peak, then rogers bought that ISP out and I have it decline from 9meg unlimited to 5meg 60gig capped. Technology has been going backwards in this country because of these companies.

The CRTC is absolute garbage. We should invite US telecom companies here to each rogers and bell what competition is.

There's absolutely no reason why Canada shouldn't be leading the way in broadband.

I'm still in denial about being charged for caller ID and voicemail. In the US it's impossible to get any line without those basic features for FREE.

Also, this whole long distance thing is a joke. I don't understand why someone in 416 has to pay long distance to speak to someone in Oshawa.

It's just making me angry that our government sits back and let's us take crap. In the US or Europe, telecom companies get mutilated over these types of things.

Oh don't even get me started. I've been ranting about the CRTC for several years.

They've singlehandedly set Canada back technologically couple of years of progress and I'm talking the two major areas - Cell and Internet. And it translates to people not being able to compete with the rest of the world.

They're either dumb & lack foresight or they are on Rogers/Bell's payroll.

weak implies some level of effort, non existent would be more appropriate.

Good, I hope the slam the crap out of us, it's pathetic.

Lines like this

Since July, however, cable companies here have been increasingly offering faster Internet download speeds of up to 50Mpbs.

really get my blood going as well. What's the point of a 50Mbps connection if you're capped at 60 gigs?

I don't for the life of me understand how the government year after year fails to see how pathetic we are becoming in the communications area.

Right. CRTC is useless. I even suspect they are subsidized by the big two.

STOP VOTING! When are people going to get it!

There's people who are apathetic and/or clueless (i.e. not aware of it all) but most of you realize it.

The government/politicians are in bed with Bell, Rogers among others. You think they don't sit around having lunch and crap like that! Yeah! Stop voting and supporting all those ##%#%#!

I don't vote anymore so I'm doing my part. Also, this is more powerful than writing petitions and b*tching on forums!

Actually Telus includes call display in my landline now. It was a direct result of the competition shaw was offering. I prefer a landline, but I got the ad from shaw in the mail, so I called telus to see what I could do. I get my landline now for 20.95, includes call display, they don't charge me the 5 dollar ld fee, and ld is 4 cents a minute to anywhere in NA.

so at least there's competition in the phone market.

for internet. its all up to government. we have a duoploy. DSL vs. Cable in every province. The costs of laying down to new copper/fibre makes any true competition impossible. The duopoly wants to keep what they have so they operate as you think they would.

If we want any real competition the government has to regulate it, because there's no way it would happen otherwise.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but it seems like we're getting the short end of the stick on everything in Canada, or more specificialy Ontario, or even more specifically the GTA.

I'm also not sure if it's the annoying plastic bag tax, HST, gigantic TTC fare hike, gouging by the telecom doupoly, insane care insurance, e-health, or one of the hundreds of other signs of a corrupt and useless government failing to do it's job...

...then again, can we honestly escape it? The Libs want to rob us blind, the NDP want to unionize everything they see, and the Tories are secretly wish to become the 51st state....
