So I've never had to buy an aftermarket remote, but I just bought a Vizio TV display model that was missing the remote. I do not use any external devices so I figure the harmony remotes are overkill. I noticed factory direct has some <$10 universal remotes.

So my question...for my purpose of only needing a basic remote for this LCD TV, is there anything specific to look for or will the cheapest of the cheap remotes accomplish the job?

Buy the harmony remote, pretty well documented... has some support (not sure about refurbs) and there are a number of forums to help you out. If you want bottom of the barrel, check out XScargo, or just about any electronic goodies store.

You should be looking for something that has 'lite buttons' for the times lights are low, takes 1 or 2 cheap batteries. Easy to set-up... pre-configured devices and learning would be nice... better still is downloadable configured devices; so with all that said... harmony should be a consideration

Assuming that you have a Rogers HD box, you already have a really good universal remote --- just enter all the model numbers of your home electronics gear, and it will give you the remote control codes.

No, I just use the TV for either OTA HD, or hooked up to my computer as a monitor.

I know that the op probably got his remote already but is it realy possible to get a universal remote for a LCD or HD set? As for the other poster what I did if see if you can get model number of the universal remote and either visit the manufactur of it or go to their website. Then either ask or see if there are details you can get the remote and if you can get the info you need.

If you're somewhat technology savvy, get a Harmony and be done with. It controls everything (almost) that's infrared based.
