Afterward, the plan is dinner... maybe Jack Astors?!
Show of hands:
1) Nikko (lz7j) - bringing pocket wizards, 2 speedlights, 2 stands, umbrella's/modifiers.

Ah, why not.. wedding season winding down, have more time now to take photos just for fun for once. I'm in.
If you have a 7D with built-in triggering, that would be nice!
1 x Canon 580ex (mini softbox available, also Gary Fong full cloud)
2 sets of universal wireless triggers that can be used with Sony, Nikon, Canon flashes (2 receivers, 2 transmitters)
Have 2 x umbrellas and 2 x stands if needed. Though I prefer traveling light. Maybe employ human stands for the umbrellas instead?
Thanks for organizing, Nikko.

Matt, I'm bringing my sb26 flashes (they're more user friendly with the pw's).
I have 5 pw (plus2's and multimax32) units and I think sabesh is bringing his as well (+2).
If you guys want, feel free to bring your 580/800/900.
I'm retracting my offer of bringing the lightstand/umbrella unless someone volunteers to carry them. I'm bringing my 200L instead.

I kinda wanna join you guys... see you all in action. I'd feel so unimaginably incapable at taking a photo next to any of you... haha. Plus I have like no equipment, :)

If you need someone to carry equipment for you, I'll happily do it. I'd like to attend to learn a thing or two. I don't have any high end equipment so it'll strictly be a educational thing for me.
How long do you think this excursion will last?

Just wondering (assuming this isn't the first time you guys have done this!) are the shots generally a more candid/handheld or fully set up/tripod shots?

Kaitlyn, we held one of these meets back in August on Queen St.
Here's a short clip I took to give you an idea of the atmosphere.

yonge/dundas sounds so much more fun.
besides Honest Ed's, Bloor/Bathurst is pretty gloomy negibourhoud with old 2-storey buildings

The reason why I chose bloor & bathurst is because it'd be less busy. If we're going to set-up lights/stands, it might be a bit more hassle doing it right in the core.
If Yonge/Dundas is more convenient for the consensus, I have no problems changing the location. Let me know by 6pm tomm.

Yonge/Dundas though is far from the sushi places at Bloor/Bathurst. :( Parking is hella expensive and hard to find as is at Yonge/Dundas. Bloor/Bathurst is a little easier.
Although I echo the sentiment that Bloor/Bathurst is rather uninspiring to shoot at vs. Yonge/Dundas with more open space and interesting scenery to shoot.
It's a question of where we wanna go eat after in both areas...

I'm in! --> 580EX II, PW MiniTT1, PW FlexTT5, Demb diffuser Pro.
Should I bring my 270EX too? :) Laugh at me all ya want, but it's my favourite flash, lol.
I guess If I bring my 7D, then I won't need the triggers, provided I'm within range and have line of sight.

Sam, leave that dinky 270ex at home!
Please bring the 7D as I'd like to play with it!
If you don't mind, can you bring the 50 (I want to test it against my newer copy).
--
Have you guys decided where to meet yet? I'm good either way.
I figure Bloor would be a little different as we can always walk towards Yorkville for good looking photo ops. Dundas square isn't bad (I usually park within the AMC building across Ryerson for $6 after 6pm) - if we go for this, food wise, we'll be limited to Jack Astors or WOO (**BARF**, right Ryan?)
---
btw... Ryan, another incentive for you to come:
2009/11/03 16:56 International item released from Customs for processing by Canada Post
16:33 MISSISSAUGA International item arrived in Canada and will be reviewed by Customs
2009/10/31 11:24 International item has left the origin country and is en route to Canada
That's my 50L (1.OH). I should have it by Thurs :)

Nov 3rd, 2009, 05:36 PM
Well not necessarily you HAVE to set up light stands...
We can hold them with our hands. :cheesygri
Yonge and Dundas isn't all that busy at 6 PM.. unless there's some event.
As it's getting colder, Dundas Square should be empty mostly.
Shooting in the intersection anyone? :D

But he might drop it, and we'll be outside...on asphalt, dirty wet asphalt.. ;) lol
Last time I did an engagement shoot at Yorkville, there was a lot of construction FYI on Cumberland. This was back in early September. Not sure if it's still there. But Thursday nights in Yorkville means packed crowds as the early clubbers and bar hoppers are out which is good for subjects to shoot. :) I just hope it doesn't rain. My lens are weather sealed, my bodies are somewhat.
And I totally forgot about Ryerson parking after 6pm! I get out of my office building at 5pm though, it's near the airport so there's a good chance I'll be late heading into downtown.
Food selections at Yonge and Dundas Square is limited to your standard pub grill fare, although - I'd really be inclined to go to Jack Astor's and get the balcony seating just for the view and photographic opportunity.

its a beast of a lense. i hear the sharpness really hurts at 1.0 though and the 1.2 outperforms it except for that slight bit of speed

There's a broad copy variation with this particular lens. The sample that I'm getting is not that bad (still, any properly working 50/1.2L will out resolve it).
I got it for two reasons:
1) for my BOKEH project
2) got a great price on it... it is inexpensive, especially compared to my noctilux or any leica-M glass for that matter

The goal to this exercise is to shoot 5 portraits and candids. There's at least a dozen of us attending so we'll probably split up in groups of 3-4. It's a good idea to plan out your shots beforehand. I suggest spending some time on www.strobist.com and learn the basics.
Other than that, it will be an interesting night!

Fyi, weather calls for 0 degrees, feeling like -5 C for the evening with isolated showers. Humidity at 80% which means a good chance of our equipment getting condensation. Take the necessary precautions if you plan on going.
What necessary precautions are those? Avoid changing lenses outside? :S

I have a 70-200 f/4L non-IS, but that's not weather sealed. :(

I've had sparkling wine sprayed all over my 40D and 17-55 before...and that's carbonated alcohol with sugar.. lol!
I'd bring a plastic bag to cover up the body and lens for those with Rebels and other entry level cameras..just in case. Hoods would also be good to protect front elements from getting rain on your lens that could ruin your shot.

Don't worry about the condensation. Weathersealed or not, they will fog (only way to really prevent condensation inside a lens is if it were air sealed tight).
And even if it fogs, it will eventually evaporate.
What's the matter with you guys.. don't you shoot in the winter in -40c weather and dust storms in Bolivia? Geeeze... a little drizzle is cake! :)
btw, the weather is looking mighty fine tonight. See you guys there!
