I bought this at TSCC last year for $99 on clearance and it has been an excellent GPS. Took me all over NFLD no problem, even rather remote places.

I have this model and have been using this for a year now. It works great but my only gripe is that it can take close to 5 min to acquire a signal. I even bought an external antenna in the hopes to improve response time but that didn't make any difference.

Please note that this has the SIRFStar II chipset and can track up to 12 satellites and not the SS3.

Cool GPS unit. Bought it for my mom 2 years ago and it's been working well, we took it out on a trip out east with no hitches. Only problem is yeah sometimes it takes a while to get a signal (30-60 seconds) but most of the time it gets it pretty fast.

edit: nevermind it was the 3225 not 3210

hackable?

I remember from the old thread that it was, but it looked complicated. Check the expired deals forum for info.

I bought one as well during that sale. Been to Montreal, and the entire West Coast and it never let me down. Great little unit for the $

That's not the full meal deal. It does not have Text-to-talk or whatever it's called. I.e. it does not say the street names for the turns, just "turn left in 100m", not "turn left at Oak St."

I also bought this last year at TSCC for $99, and it has been good to me ever since...only cons are: slow to get a signal, takes too long to realise u went the wrong way

So is it a good or a bad deal? It looks easy enough to hack, and looks slim enough to carry around.

In Specifications it states...."No Downloadable Maps?"
What does that mean?

I don't know what it means but I bought that unit and while waiting for it to ship, I found out it's quite easy to hack - you just need to change one file on the GPS, but your favorite GPS software on a SD card (i'm gonna put iGo 8.3) with the latest maps... voila!!!

So how does that make it a better GPS?

Well, once you can hack a unit, you can basically install whatever you like on it. I plan installing iGo 8 with the newest maps, but some people might like to install MioPocket 3.0 and be able to play mp3s, videos, games, etc...

This means it will say 'left turn in 1.1 km' vs. "turn left on major st in 1.1 km"

no text to speech here.

Firmware improves the route calculation and rerouting. It has NOTHING to do with the number of satellites it can track as that is the function of the chipset.

Every website / review I've seen mention that this unit uses the sirfstar III chip. Why do you say it uses the sirfstar II?

There were a bunch of links posted on RFD when this unit was on clearance at TSCC about 1.5 years ago. Maybe check in Expired Deals.

There were a few threads where people said "I'm running iGo etc on it" but never provided details. Here's one possible post for info
