3D Dot Game Heroes is the new game from FROM Software. Pretty much a throwback to the old 8Bit gaming. It takes A LOT of influence from the Zelda games.
I haven't seen any discussion about this game over here yet, so I figured I'd make a thread for it. This game is getting released in Japan on November 5th and as of right now, is currently planned on being localized for a North American release 'sometime soon'. Still no word on who is doing the localization or when it will be released though.
Here are a couple of videos:

I think this game looks great, it's a very different, although familiar, style.
This could be a hit or miss here in North America. It appeals to hardcore/nostalgic gamers on the PS3 which is likely a smaller market. If they have enough marketing behind it, it should do relatively well.

it really appeals to me... and its funny... I had a concept for something similar to this years ago... just cuz I loved The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past so much! :)

I was watching a stream of some japanese dude playing this today, and it reminds me SO much of zelda. I had no clue what was going on (wasn't in english), but it looked really fun. I agree this game will be really hit or miss when released in North America, but it should do fairly well in my opinion.

I'm so there. And borrowed from Zelda is an understatement. I mean, I see Octoroks, Death Mountain, the exact scene from A Link to the Past when he picks up the sword... goddamn me need want need bad now plz

I've had my eye on this for a while. love the retro style but I'm wondering if the gameplay will hold up. Will probably wait for a price drop on this one.
BTW what's up with the giant sword? The swing literally takes up half the screen.

One of the things I forgot to mention in the OP, this game has fully customizable characters (aka create whatever you want). Just found this picture:

Just wanted to reply again, saying that a release date has finally been set for the NA release :D
Atlus (as expected) will be localizing, and it is set for release in May. Atlus also realizes that most people will not spend $59.99+ on this game and have set the price at $39.99.

Atlus is sure putting out some awesome games this year. I want this game too. Seems like a blatant rip off of LOZ - LTTP which is my fav zelda game of all time so im all over this like a fat kid on a smartie

It certainly has a nostalgic charm. I wonder if this would appeal to a younger demographic at all.

NEVER.
kids don't play these games anymore.
They love FPS and GTA too much. Its quite sad in my opinion. The majority of younger kids are now growing up on 'mature' or 'T' rated games and its just destroying the gaming experience for them in my opinion.

you know why we all love mario? because it came with the NES and was a solid game.
wanna know why we all love GTA and FPS? they are all solid games and sell well for a reason.
it has nothing to do with mature or not mature, it has to due with good games selling really well.

i like gta/fps but just not into it anymore. the only reason fps games are selling well is because there is a massive quantity of those type of games. Yet kids do seem to be attracted to those games

...and they typically have a multiplayer component which make the games that much better.
I find 3d DOT Game heroes looks harsh on the eyes in the screenshots. It may be different in action but it just looks like a mishmash of cubed polygons.

I disagree with you on all fronts.
I'm telling you right now, that the 'home' and 'family' situations are completely different 20 years ago from now. Its drastically different. Back then, even we kids played stuff like Contra. We loved Mario because its was a GREAT game.
I understand GTA/MW etc....are GREAT games but if these are what the kinds are playing today, then times have truly changed. THe game types are drastically different. You cannot deny the fact that back in the day, the majority of games were platformers and puzzles, etc... Now the majority are shooters. It changes the way kids think. You know its bad when you see a 10 year old in the mall asking his mom to buy GTAIV.

well graphics are attractive but it doesn't necessarily define the game. Let's take megaman9 for example, that game is pixelated and yet it was appreciated by many.

I'm not saying it that is the problem. What I'm trying to say is that it is hard to make out shapes and stuff because it is 3d pixels. If it was in standard 2d sprites, it would be easier to look at.
I appreciate what they are trying to do but it doesn't look like a good transition from 2D to 3D.
