I suppose I'm one of the odd balls that have yet to play either of these games! *i know i don't consider myself a gamer :P* Anyhow, g/f wants to play one of these games and I"d be down for learning how to play it but I also want to purchase the game for whenever i have a party or entertain people over at my place. Which is better to get?
Thanks.

Both are good though I believe rockband is easier so if you have people over who arent gamers, they will be able to adapt more quickly as opposed to GHWT

They're very similar, but I'd go for Rock Band 2 for these reasons:
1) It has trophy support, GHWT does not.
2) It has more downloadable songs, should you ever want them.
3) It's not an Activision product.

I'd go for Rockband also.

rock band.. played it at a friends house during the summer and it was great, even though some of us were new at it.

RB2 definately
A lot easier to get into, some really catchy songs (although both have great set lists), and if you want to DL songs down the road RB stuff is much better IMO (and with PS3 gameshareable)
And Activision sucks

So I'm looking at what RB2 special edition comes with and it looks like it can only play 3 players (mic, drumset, guitar)? Can I get 4 players on there? As I have a PS3 and would like to make the best use of it as possible.

4 players. You can have two guitar players at the same time. Just need to pick up another guitar separately.
Great party game. Alot of my friends playing it for the first time had a blast.

Don't mean to threadjack, but I think it could be pertinent to the OP, but what is everyone's preference on the instruments themselves? I've heard that the Guitar Hero guitar is superb, the RB drums are superior, and the mic's don't really matter. I'm trying to pick up a second guitar, and I'm not sure if I want to get RB2 SE, or GH:WT (It's currently $79.99 right now).

I bought the Rock Band 2 full band kit, and then the GHWT game + guitar, so that I'd have 2 guitars.
The GHWT guitar is slightly easier to play. I prefer the Rock Band 2 drums. They don't have the symbols like the GHWT drums, but they're sturdier feeling and don't slide down the the GHWT drums do.
If I could get the fancy Beatles drums, I would. :)

instruments aside, gamewise alone, RB2 is by far superior.
The game is probably easier than GHWT but thats because its more balanced towards all the instruments whereas GHWT still shows some preferences towards guitar play over all the other instruments.
I had both for a while and it eventually reached a point where GHWT was never played again, and I traded it to EB for a decent return.
RB2 has better song selection and the DLC is a million times better than GHWT.

I own both and RB2 is better suited for parties because it sports a No-Fail Option that GHWT lacks. This is pretty much essential for casual play.

No question, Rock Band. But it also depends on what kind of songs your audience is interested in if you don't have any DLC. Out of the box, Guitar Hero is geared for the hard rock sounding songs and songs that seem to last forever.

ROCKBAND!
aesthetically pleasing as well as pretty much same songs with some better 'group' songs IMO.

And to answer OP, Rock Band 2. Better supported by the company. It's by Harmonix who made the first two Guitar Heroes. Also, as mentioned **** Activision :)

I vote for Rock Band 2. It's waaaay eaiser for newbies and it has a huge catalog of DLC songs covering many different genres that you can keep on adding to the game so that it remains fresh.

Should also mention that Rockband2 is compatible with almost all GH/RB instruments, while GH has issues with some RB instruments.
If you want a GH game, look at GH5: haven't played it but it seems to have a lot of the problems with GHWT.
Personal preference, but rectangles > ovals. Ovals are fine if you're playing by yourself, but cram three charts on your TV and it gets squinty.

You can get a refurb GHWT band set for 100 on futureshop.ca (sometimes on sale for 70) and you can get RB2 game only for 20. so for 120 you can get 2 games loaded with 80+ songs each (about 10 overlap). This setup works on ps3 compatibility wise too.
You can't play RB1 or track packs on the GHWT drums for PS3 but you can import everything into RB2 and can play everything that way.
You can also just buy RB1 or RB2 complete kits for 100 also.

This. Add another vote for rock band! (i think it's circles not ovals)
