I want to do a cake/pie with chestnut filling. Just wondering if there are any stores in GTA that sell canned chestnut puree or paste? I know I can make the puree myself but it would involve a lot of work ...
I heard they may be available in French food stores but I have no idea where these shops are. Any help is appreciated!

Have you checked the baking aisle at your local grocery store? It might also be labeled 'chestnut spread'.
A quick Google indicates that in the GTA both Whole Foods or Highland Farms carry it...

Check European Delis such as Karpaty and Brandt.

Longo's has it as well, it's not in a can but in a bag, haven't tried it so I can't say whether its any good.

If you can't find it, you can always buy the already roasted and shelled chestnuts that they sell in most supermarkets. I think another poster already mentioned this, but Longo's @ York Mills has a HUGE display of these bags. I've bought them before and they're a good product. I've also bought them at Pusateri's and McEwans--Pusateri's has them vacuum packed from France = $$$ and McEwan has the same exact ones that Longos has. In a pinch they are good especially when you don't have time/energy to roast and peel them, but there's nothing like a freshly roasted chestnut!

I believe it's in the section where they sell sweet things like jam.

My dad's bakery was the first bakery in Toronto to carry the chestnut cake over 30 years ago.

Notwithstanding the obvious question (WHY???! Dear God, why???), try one of these places:

Which aisle?
They have an "international" aisle or area now in lots of locations. The other products on the same shelf were things like truffle oil, Maldon Sea Salt (smoked & regular), saffron (at a good price), green peppercorns.
Kind of a catchall area of interesting ingredients.
