Newegg.ca has a interesting deal today if you've been waiting for a 2.5" external hard drive deal. The Shell Shocker deal of the day is the Western Digital My Passport Elite 320GB USB 2.0 Westminster Blue External Hard Drive WDMLB3200TN - Retail for $72.99 (http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-749547-10602595?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.newegg.ca%2FProduct% 2FProduct.aspx%3FItem%3DN82E16822136243&sid=forums) with free shipping. It's good for today only and while supplies last.

What sets the "Elite" version of the My Passport drives apart? A bit of research turns up that Elite drives have soft-touch finish and an external capacity gauge. It looks like it's also backed by a 5-year warranty instead of the 3-year warranty on other My Passport drives.

The going rate for a 2.5" 320GB external hard drive is usually $80 or more, and I'd say they're dealworthy at near the $70 mark. Getting a Western Digital 320GB drive with the extra "Elite" perks and free shipping makes this a nice pickup in my book.

The drives aren't soldered onto the PCB right?

not sure if they are soldered or not but i know wd puts different quality drives in different versions of their external hd.

I would imagine that elite would mean that they have a better hd inside (on top of the outside gimmicks). Kind of like having a wd green vs a wd black.

This is the important question.

Hm....looks like there is nowhere to PM this sucker. Staples only carries it special order, and BB, FS, etc. don't seem to carry it anymore.

is this an awesome deal? I need an ext hd my lacie one kinda died on me yesterday while i'm backing up... so far I can only find 250 gig for 69.99 at ncix, or get the 500gb essential at bb for 119

or there is the mybook 1tb essential for 119 at bb as well, but I'm leaning more towards portable size

If you need a portable drive that doesn't require an AC adapter to power, these are perfect.

I remember buying this at Costco last year for $150. I returned it though (unopened) and bought the WD 250GB Essential for $50 cheaper just cause I didn't need the extra 70GB.

So yeah, good deal!

Not worth $20 more, imo. If you're going to pick it up at the store, then maybe.

Thanks for posting the deal.

Does anybody know if this drive is detected as a "real" drive?

I got burned in the past when I ordered a usb drive (different brand) and it had some weird firmware that made it appear as a CD drive that contained backup/synch software and software to mount the drive as an encrypted volume. Long story short, it was completely useless and I had to give it away.

The description of this drive makes mention backup/synchronization software and every time I see that I break out in a sweat.

My other passport drives show up as legit HD's.
