the $35 plan doesn't look all that bad to me. especially with no more SAF
500mb might be a bit low, depending on how much one uses data i suppose.

The 35$ plan seems WAY to good to be true. It's really cheap for a data option + voice + Unlim SMS or double airtime or My 5

Telus' $35 plan looks pretty awesome. Wonder if I can negotiate early evenings instead of unlimited messages/my5/double daytime (though I don't talk on the phone a lot so double daytime may be good enough).

None of the Telus plans offer call display? Is this a standard feature or how much does it cost?

Edit: Holy $@&^ $14.95 per month? For Call Display? Thats ridiculous. I can live without it, but I think i can better negotiate with Rogers to give me Telus' $35 (without SAF&911) with caller id thrown in.

Maybe I can use this as leverage with Rogers when my contract is up in Jan. I hate signing 3 year contracts and would much prefer the above package on a one year contract or month to month. My current plan plus all the fees robbers throws on top seems to add up to almost $35 anyhow.

where does it say 15 for call display?

Standard price listed on Telus' website. http://business.telus.com/en_CA/BC/products/Small_Business/Telephone_And_Voice/Calling_Features/details/bcSmbCallDisplay.html#tab2

It's probably possible to get a cheaper price, but really the voicemail/call id bundles from others is less than that $15 base price. Is this how they're compensating for including voicemail as part of their basic package?

That's the price for a Telus business landline. Regular price for CallerID on Telus Mobility is $7: http://www.telusmobility.com/en/BC/calling_services/calldisplay.shtml

Ahh thanks, that makes more sense. I searched for telus caller ID and that was the first to come up. Seemed to be pretty ridiculous.

Be very careful.

Remember how they are justifying the cheap plan internally at Telus: they know that most people on the cheap plan will go over and end up owing them much more, and then eventually move up to the next higher plan.

Here's my question, if I may.

I have a Samsung Omnia right now. The interface drives me insane and I'd like to switch. It strikes me that the iPhone interface is far better designed and would resolve my many complaints, in particular hanging up on clients because my ear touches the screen (or alternatively, having it lock and then having to unlock it every time I have to enter my password, delete a voice mail or dial an extension) or having to click on my calendar a half dozen times before it opens, or the lack of stylus and then making everything so darn small I'm hunting for a pen or toothpick to do anything with it.

The problem is that I have a plan that you can't get anymore, to my knowledge. I need unlimited data for one. I have that now. I need at least 1000 daytime minutes a month included, which I also have. I need a bunch of free long distance. I have an hour and a half right now. Check. I need to be able to call at least three numbers for free at any time. Also check.

Can I transfer my plan to the iPhone?

Please change the thread topic. These plans aren't officially announced, they are just the current rumour. from what I hear they are pretty close to teh real thign but not 100%.

That Telus $35 plan just looks wrong to me... mainly because I distrust Telus to do the right thing and give us a decent plan. This might've been their plan if WIND had been allowed to launch, but WIND won't be launching any time soon so I can't see them giving that $35 plan.

I hope I'm wrong, because I would be the first one to sign up for that plan. The only thing missing is the Call Display "tax".

I just phoned Telus. They don't have confirmation of pricing yet. The rep was only able to say that Apple dictates the rate plans. How ghey is that?

Even the rep told me not to get rid of my rate plans, not for nothing. He said they don't have anything even close anymore, especially the unlimited data plan for the $15. He was particularly amused with the unlimited plan for my EVDO internet for $75. He said no matter what, don't give them up because you'll never get them again.

I guess I'm not getting an iPhone after all. :(

I would suspect that these plans are pretty close to the actuals since it is Nov 1st, and the official availability is this Thursday, so I'm sure the booklets and signage with the pricing is already on their ways to the retail outlets if not already there. I would assume this source got a hold of the info before it made it out the door.

I would even settle for way less daytime minutes (50/75?) @ $35/month. DO YOU HEAR ME PHONE COMPANIES???

Sry guys bare with me because I'm a noob when it comes to data, but aren't these data plans just terrible? I imagine if I used my phone for entertainment purposes (youtube, music streaming, gps, etc) I'd run out in a week. I have always wanted to switch to an iPhone but these plans turn me off.

having said that, the ex-$35 plan seemed pretty good if I had regular access to wifi.

Not sure if they will be able attract lots of subscribers. There plans compare to Rogers, and anyway most folks that were interested in Iphone already got one. Their only chance was to attract hesitating customers by offering better plans.

Duh, there is no real competition in Canada; it's worse than a third world country >:(

What does it mean by "36 month contract/renewal"?

I am a year and a half into my contract with Telus and I want to upgrade my handset to the iPhone. So does it mean that I can't do that and I HAVE to renew my contract for 36 months to get these plans?

My Bell contract is up so I called retentions to see what they could offer. I stated I wanted an iPhone and am evaluating my options but would go to whomever offered the best pricing.

They offered:
My phone, iPhone or other smart phone with data plan
300min that I can share
200min LD
unlimited evening/weekends starting at 6pm
500mb data
unlimited text
call display, voicemail
$45

Wife's phone with no data plan
200min that can be shared
200min LD
1000 sent text/unlimited receive
unlimited evening/weekends starting at 6pm
call display/voicemail
$20

unlimited local & LD between the 2 phones
recurring monthly charges $83.46 + hst and they waive the $35 upgrade fee

I haven't talked to telus or rogers to see what they can offer so I'm not sure if I can work a better deal.

That is exactly how I bought mine and it is locked to Rogers. Though I paid $299/32GB as I resigned a 3 year commitment. There is no difference between your phone and mine. The only difference is the commitment and the price paid.

Apple stores in Canada sold/sell iPhones locked to Rogers or Fido. The only way to get an unlocked iPhone was to bring it in from a European country where the laws prohibit dealerss from selling locked phones.

Hi Dirk,
That's great plan, but usually the retention plans don't apply for new phone purchase. They give you the generous plan because they don't need to subsidize you on a new device.

So did Bell give you iPhone at $199 _and_ give you this plan? Or they gave you this plan on you current phone (means they did not sell you a $699 iPhone at $199)?

Thanks

Alan

I got an Omnia II from Bell. I inserted my Rogers, T-Mobile, and Fido sim into the Onmia and it could not connect to the any networks. Each time I turned on the phone with a non-Bell sim, I received a message that there was "no service". Based on this very limited test, I assume the phone is locked to Bell.

This is not a problem for me but it may be a problem if you want to use one of their new smartphones with another carrier's sim without getting it unlocked.

Interesting it might be a Bell+Telus lock instead of an out-right Bell lock. There are some phones like that where they are Rogers+Fido locked instead of just one or the other. The fact that Bell and Telus shares the same network might be the reason.

Could it be that the Telus/Bell network uses hsdpa for voice and data while Rogers/Fido uses gsm for voice? Could Bell have locked the gsm side but can't lock the hsdpa side of the phone?

No. It's probably because the Bell/Telus network has one share network code (302-880). I never heard of separate GSM and HSPA locks. It is a possible to lock to just a single network of multiple networks.

Rogers/Fido does use HSPA for voice when there is HSPA coverage, it's part of the UMTS/HSPA specification.

The only way to know is to try a few different SIMs in it. A US/euro SIM would be a better test but if you don't have access to one, then try to find a Rogers/Fido user and borrow their SIM.
