Are we RFDers as cheap as we say we are? Personally, I am not, so I guess I'm not a true RFDer. If I was, I would totally not give out candy AND still go trick or treating regardless of my age. Now that's true RFD spirit! :cheesygri

Its a lonely, lonely night in Calgary.

7:15 and only 12 kids so far. Normally I'm at around 80 or so by now.

I guess the flu is keeping the kids home. The temperature is freaking beautiful today, its was 14 celsius in Calgary - So hot I had to bring out the barbeque.

No, instead they dress up as children and take out their entire families and go trick or treating so that they don't have to buy candy for the next 365 days.

Interesting, I also noticed far fewer kids this year. Thought it was the colder weather..

I love seeing the really cute kids, some of them are so ridiculously adorable! There was a little girl around 3 years old dressed up as a chicken.. SO CUTE! Could barely resist dumping all my candy into her tiny little bucket. There were some people around my age though.. talk about awkward..

We gave out probably about 80ish? I too noticed it's getting less kids now, we used to easily give out way over 100. And I took our 4 years old out trick and treating, he got a big bagful and was so excited. After seeing my boy's face, I think next year I'll put even more effects to our give outs. :) Nothing beats kids' happy faces.:)

This year I am giving out those miniature bottles of Hand Sanitizer.

(More seriously, I donated a huge costco box of Candy to the condo rec people who are running the halloween event for the local kids.)

Refusing to give out candy due to the cost is not being a true RFD'er, that's being a cheap prick. Don't bring all RFD'ers down to that level.

agreed. If you or your family goes out to get candy from other people, you should be giving candy out to other children too. fair is fair. if anything, we should be discussing how to get the best treats at the lowest cost, as true RFDers. (and for the record, the best deals are in the US)

that said, I can understand if one could not afford to give candy due to being laid off, or poor or broke, but to not give candy in the RFD spirit is wrong.

I can not fathom not handing out treats on Halloween.

I get a kick out of seeing some of the costumes and connecting with my neighbours.

Had a 'Bumblebee' tonight at the door that couldn't have been more than two years old. She was very excited to see my 'kitty'. Didn't care about the candy, thats for sure! The money I spent on chocolate bars, was worth that one visit (plus I have a few left over for me :)).

Halloween was always fun when I was young and if I can help keep this fun tradition going I will.

Saving money with RFD allows me to do/afford more things that make me happy.

I don't think people are cheap. Everyone's glued to their computers now or out partying.

I give out candy, but if I see a group made of only really tall "kids" out there I don't open the door.

I'm sick of teenagers old enough to get jobs mooching candy off me. Little kids only. Not many this year though, and none with super adorable costumes :(

We probably had 150 kids tonight. Gave out around 250 pieces. Had to run out and get more after running through a 120 count box and a 125 (minus a handful we ate). :)

I always give out a real-sized chocolate bar to kids who have the best costumes. This year the list included a 6 year old Wolverine, he acted the part and scared the dog, a father and daughter who were Red Riding Hood and the big bad wolf, a kid who dressed up like a mummy (must have taken a long time from the looks of it), a Gumby and Pokey (if you're old enough to remember), and a little boy dressed up as a knight in shining armour with a little dog dressed as a princess.

A true RFD cheapskate would pretend to put something into the bag, but really take something out. (kidding!)

I'm glad I live on a dead-end court so the kids can run everywhere. It was a blast except when my dog wanted at the Scream monsters and wanted to kill the big bad wolf.:D

About the only teen we saw was one escorting a couple of toddlers while dressed as Borat. He got a candy.:cheesygri

Very cute.

So every year my family doesn't decorate or hand out candy. I feel so embarrassed, so i told them that i'd buy the candy and they can hand it out. They said that no one ever comes to the door, so they just end up with candy sitting around.

Guess they were right. Only 5 kids came to the door this year. Last year it was two. My dad told them to grab a handful from the basket. But we still have a box left over.

Sigh. I guess there aren't many kids around my area and the weather and flu is dampening what used to be a fun popular event.

K, then those people are just plain selfish. Don't tell me that people like yao, who brags about going out t or t'ing to get candy to give out to others aren't cheap!

Most definitely. Its all over in an hour and a half anyways. I have too many great childhood memories to not pay it forward.
Besides way fewer kids come round these days anyways. We have maybe 20-30 kids in our neighborhood. I dont get it, theres like 3 grade schools within a couple kms from our house.
