I've used only shampoo all my life. Is it necessary to use conditioner at all or is it just a gimmick?

I use it once in a while when Head and Shoulder comes in the "dual" pack with both Shampoo and conditioner.

I think it depends on your hair type. I have super fine hair and if I use conditioner all the time my hair gets really heavy and looks greasy, not the look I'm after!
I use it once a week or less. I have tried many types, salon and drugstore brands and all do the same thing to my hair.
My hair is very healthy, my hair dresser is always commenting on how lucky I am.
I have to disagree with what others have said about it being 'necessary'

A lot of guys don't use conditioner because it isn't necessary but for someone with hair like mine, if I don't use conditioner it gets SUPER frizzy. Same thing for women who have long hair, without using conditioner you can see a BIG difference in their hair.

What sort of differences are you talking about? Are hair more prone to fall out of it's roots if we don't use it?

Well I am not too sure about the hair falling out part but for people with long hair, if they don't use conditioner their hair can get really tangled and hard to comb through, especially if they have thin hair. Shampoo takes out the natural oils on your head so without conditioner your hair will feel very dry and and not as healthy looking. For someone with short straight hair it isn't very noticeable but if a women is blow drying her hair they will get more frizz and it won't look as nice.
When using conditioner you can see that the hair is much more silky smooth and easier to comb through and as a result you get less tangles and frizz and more volume.

Well, personally I mean necessary for me. I only shampoo 2-3 times a week but w/o conditioner I can't even get a comb or brush through it w/o breakage. I also have fine hair, but conditioner doesn't make it greasy at all, but with nothing in my hair it doesn't style well at all...so yeah, necessary for my hair. And my hairdresser too makes sure my hair is kept healthy and has no problem with me conditioning daily, but she sure doesn't tolerate people who shampoo daily.

But then I'd be shampooing everyday and according to almost every source I know, that's bad for hair, that's what removes the necessary oils from your hair. And again, squeaky clean hair just doesn't style as well. If you're only using it 2 or 3 times a week I guess that's fine, but I really do need to condition daily.

I use conditioner and it helps a lot. My hair is never dry and its always soft despite styling it almost everyday and blowdrying it.

Definitely use separate conditioner. As you already said, you don't need to shampoo as often as you condition. I condition every other day and shampoo once every week or two.

I don't use conditioner because it takes a long time to rinse out, and I have a lot of hair and bad plumbing. I put anti-frizz product in my hair before blowdrying, so that takes the place of conditioner.

Well let's just say that you put product in your hair. How can you go a week without washing it? Do you apply more product on top of the stuff that's already there? I shampoo at least twice everyday and I think it's probably bad for my hair.

Maybe it's because you don't apply conditioner enough. :cheesygri

I use to shampoo everyday but now I shampoo every other day. If I apply product on a day I don't shampoo, although I try not to, I just rinse it with water. Twice everyday isn't really necessary. A week without washing is kind of bad though. Oh any I also use deep cleaning shampoo about once a week to get rid of all the stuff that slowly builds up.

Ever since I stopped shampooing every day, my hair hasn't been as dry and dull as before, so I'm using less product. I also stick to products that are easy to wash out.

I don't use conditioner (used to be called creme rinse).
It's just another expense that I feel I don't need.
I don't shampoo my hair every day either. About every second day.
I buy the cheapest shampoo I can find and it still works okay.

As a guy, I'd say I use it once and awhile.
No conditioner if I'm going to bed (I figure remnants might end up on the pillow case and inevitably on your face) OR after a serious workout + shower (seems like you don't need it).
For the standard shower though, it's almost a must.

Product? Did somebody say product? LOL...yes I use product, almost daily unless I'm just planning on staying home and not seeing anyone in which case I'll usually put it up in a bun or a twist or some sort of upsweep that's quick and simple and ok to answer the door if need be...lol. But I shower every single morning so even though I only shampoo 2 or 3 times a week, most of the product does get washed away. And yes, shampooing twice a day is really bad for your hair! And I don't know if your a guy or a girl, or if/how much you style your hair, but as I said before and most hairstylists will also tell you, squeaky clean hair sucks when it comes to styling. Hair that's a little 'dirty' if you will, styles really well and stays as you style it for the entire day.

I use it pretty often, The shampoo and conditioner seperately too, heard that its better that way. Makes my hair smoother and keeps it from getting oily too fast. I have really oily hair.

depends on your type of hair and length. i have long hair and without using conditioner, my hair is all tangled and painful to comb through afterwards. different conditioners work differently too. i find hotel conditioners pretty ineffective in detangling my hair.

I don't use product very often so I don't have to worry about that building up. I shampoo and condition 2x a week - separate products. I never used to condition when I was younger because it would leave my hair feeling heavy and limp, but now I use I've found a brand that leaves it feeling soft and light. I use Jason Naturals and it works really well.

I use conditioner when I have time, or when my hair needs some extra care.
I have pretty long hair, and using conditioner makes it really shiny and silky. Also keeps it healthy when I use a lot of heat (blowdryer, curling iron).
Conditioner is good for my hair at least, but the thing is, you can't just shove some in your hair and then rinse off. You should leave it on for awhile...sometimes I shampoo, stick conditioner in my hair, and go do something for 30 minutes to let it set in (that's pretty long though, but the longer I leave it in, the silkier it tends to be afterwards).
The 2 in 1's seem to work for me, at least the Head and Shoulders. I just work it into my hair, and then leave it in for a few minutes before rinsing.
Also, I find that if I use too much or don't distribute it evenly, or don't rinse it all out properly, my hair looks "greasy" afterwards...so rinsing well does help with this.

I don't use conditioner. Whenever I do, it makes my hair either poofy, or oily.
Then again, I keep my hair fairly short.

To people who don't shampoo everyday, how do you keep your hair feeling and smelling fresh then? Is the daily conditioner enough to do that?

Well, your hair will take a week or two to get used to not getting shampooed everyday, and it'll be greasy for that period. After that, your hair should feel just fine because it's no longer producing as much oils to replace whatever shampoo stripped out on a daily basis before.
Conditioning every day or every other day is enough that my hair doesn't smell even on non-conditioning days.

There are lots of different hair types... some need to shampoo daily, others dont... some need conditioner daily, some dont.
I think its hard to take advice from someone unless you have the same hair type.

Ok this may come as a shock to you but I go months without shampooing my hair as do many people. Using conditioner all depends on your hair type.
Straight, curly and relaxed/permed hair should all be treated differently.
I have curly hair so instead I "condition wash or what people call co-wash"my hair meaning that, instead of using shampoo to wash my hair, I use conditioner. I cowash my hair everyday and leave some conditioner in my hair as a "leave-in" to prevent frizziness.
Does everyone know that only people with straight hair get the greasies??!! The curlier your hair is, the dryer it is. People with straight hair can tolerate the sulfates and chemicals in shampoo, whereas, shampoo is too drying for people with curly hair.
People with curly hair lack oils so they need oils and conditioners to be put into their hair. When you have straight hair, it cannot tolerate as much conditioner because it is already oily.
To clarify my scalp I use apple cider vinegar once in awhile.

I have straight, asian hair. My hair was definitely a lot greasier when I used to subject my hair to shampooing every other night.

Every morning...and I agree, necessary.
Not "necesarry".
Depends on your hair type.
If you are a guy or just anyone w short hair and hair is not dry you could just use a styling product that moistuizes or gel even.
Or use 2 in 1 shampoos.
I do need conditioner as my hair is extremely dry even w 2 in 1 shampoo and all the expensive ones, even organic all natural shampoo I always have dry coarse hair.
My mom does not use conditioner. She has short hair, colored and her hair still looks nice.
If you already use styling products a lot of them have oils ect and you do not need conditioner or at least not every day.
I remember reading on here how some guy on rfd did not use any shampoo at all for 3+ months.
Yuck.
I think you need shampoo though as everyone sweats.

Point being that straight hair is treated differently. Shampooing curly hair every night will do the opposite...make your hair dryer.
It is not much different than treating your skin on your body. Some have oily skin and others have dryer skin.

I go through periods where I do or don't, depending on the lenght of my hair.
Using conditionner definately makes it more manageable and I can comb right through it, but I hate using it because it makes me and the shower feel all slippery after.
It also tends to weigh down my hair and it gets greasy quicker.
I've tried the new Herbal Essences Fusion line and just the shampoo alone is very thick and mosturizing. It's not even a two in one, but it does the job well. Just from experience, the creamy or pearly shampoos are more moisturizing from the transparant gel kind.
It all depends on the lenght and texture of your hair. Just try a week with and without, you'll see the difference.
