On my recent financing deal with Dell, they refused to ship my computer until I send them one of the following,

Ø Major Utility Bill (most recent and compete bill with stub portion)
o Hydro
o Gas
o Water
o Cable
o Telephone (Only land line).Cell Phone and Online bills are not accepted.

Ø Valid Home Insurance Policy
Ø Signed Mortgage Document
Ø Rental Agreement

AND TWO of the following;

Ø Valid Driver’s License (Front & Back)
Ø Valid Canadian Passport
Ø Permanent Residency Card
Ø Canadian Citizenship Card
Ø SIN Card (Front & Back) In the event a SIN card is not available will accept a Notice of Assessment

Isn't it outrageous! Dell reps are now sitting overseas, and what are the chances of my ID's being sold on the black market?

Needless to say I was shocked at their silly demands, and refused to proceed with the order. For me, Goodbye Dell for good.

That is crazy. Why don't you just pay with a credit card?

What do you expect, they're effectively lending you money, of course they're going to want numerous pieces of ID to ensure they are protecting themselves

I've financed a **** load of stuff from Dell, and they've never asked me for all of this. Only SIN/address/phone/etc the usual stuff. Not mortgage, crap. But it looks like they want proof of income? How much is the PC you are trying to finance?

Only SIN/address/phone/etc the usual stuff. Not mortgage, crap.Read what the OP said, "one of the following..." not all of the following. The requirement for "the usual stuff" is no different from any of the other "usual lenders." ;)
But it looks like they want proof of income? Not at all. You can meet their requirements without divulging income or even that you have a job.

If the OP doesn't want to provide the requested info to Dell, whether or not it ends up overseas, he's free to apply for credit at his local bank, finance company or credit card.

One time I was working for a start-up company and we were either trying to get something like net30 or lease a computer. They asked the boss for his personal tax return for the previous year and a personal guarantee.

Needless to say we made other financing arrangements.

I was known to them...bought computers before...though on credit cards...but say mastercard lends you a lot more than $1100 dollars...but they don't ask you beyond your credit history and SIN, or do they?

I can tell you for sure that these financial service guys are sitting in India. I have the guy's email, first with an alias...and then his actual name...

If they knew from my history I've bought and leased before, why asking for that now...

Although you have used them before you still need to provide ID. How are they to know that you are really you?

You should look at this both ways. Dell is protecting themselfs and you as a consumer. Do you know how much fraud is out there?

I for one am glad that they take so many pre-cautions. I'd hate to be the victim of fraud due to lax policies.

That's not the same. Once the credit card company approves the charge, DFS gets their money. In that situation they don't care about your credit record. But when you request credit directly from DFS they have to do the sort of due diligence they're doing now in order to protect themselves.

but say mastercard lends you a lot more than $1100 dollars...but they don't ask you beyond your credit history and SIN, or do they?
But, but, they do. They did when you applied for the credit card and they ran a credit check on you via one of the credit reporting companies like Transunion. They continue to monitor your credit record and payment history for as long as you have an card with them.

As stated before, if you're selective about what information you give DFS from their list, you don't have to give them any more than you'd give a bank or credit card company if you wanted to take out a loan from them.
