We have a LCD tv purchased in December 2006. Its deemed broken by Futureshop and LG so they said go ahead and get a replacement.
The fine print is:
Replacement Products
At our option, we may replace your product with a new or refurbished product of equal or similar features and functionality, though not necessarily of the same brand, or we may issue a store credit for the original purchase price.
We want to now purchase a BIGGER TV that costs $2000, but instead of $1500 towards it, they would give us back $899 towards the $2000.
The TV was $1500 back then, and the warranty was $369. They now want to give us a TV worth only $899. How can we get Future Shop to issue a store credit for the original purchase price?
Is this the way it works?

I would be firm and state their own policy. Demand a store credit for $1500 and do not take the $899 TV.

You are entitled to a tv that is equivalent to the one originally purchased, NOT the amount of the purchase. Therefore you are NOT entitled to $1500.00 just because you paid $1500.00 back then.
Which tv did you buy in 2006? Which tv are they giving yo now as a replacement? Whatever the replacement is worth you can use as a credit towards the bigger or better unit.

That't not true. It clearly states on their policy that "we may issue a store credit for the original purchase price". This is the whole reason why people spend hundreds on an extended warranty through Futureshop. Futureshop sells the hell out of the warranty and promises a replacement unit if it breaks. When you are actually faced with the problem they weasle out and try everything to deceive the customer.

No, it doesn't. You've ignored the only important words

All they have to do is give a reasonably equivalent replacement. If they are offering that amount towards a different product that is already more then they "have to".

This is distinct from, "we will issue a store credit .....",
both from an English language perspective, and a legal context.
The start of that paragraph is, "At our option, we may ......,"
Don't know about you, but that sounds to me like they are in control.
Some F.S. products actually do go up in price over time, so the language protects them both ways.
Realistically, is it surprising?
The plan is through a 3rd. party insurance company, so it's not going to be biased in favour of customer satisfaction and loyalty with Future Shop at any expense.

This wording is why I stopped buying them.
Back at the end of the Tube TV era, we had bought a JVC 27inch for 299.99.
A year later something went wrong with the tube and everything looked yellow. They deemed they couldn't fix it and tried to replace it.
Since Tube TV's were just starting to phase out. At this point they had phased out curved tubes and everything was flatscreen.
They tried to give us the POS insignia (which is no name) as a replacement. I tried to say its a POC, and the PQ wasn't as good as my JVC tv. They said it was the only thing close. I took it home, I was livid. I couldn't stand it. Brought it back they wouldn't do anything. Then they offered to give me a credit for the value of the insignia TV which was about 70 dollars less.
I argued as much as a I could and we gave up.. took the credit and bought a trinitron. We had to use the credit, they wouldn't put it on a card, so not only did we not the original value back, but we bought a tv when it wasn't on sale.
Future Shop no longer gets my big ticket purchases. For cheaping out on 70 bux, I bought my LCD TV from Vision, My last reciever from Visions... Some stuff from London Drugs or online sources.
When I bought the extended warantee I was under the impression it insured the item to its original purchase price. At least thats how the sales person explained it to me. Those warantee's are a ripoff. My last TV I didn't buy one, it had a 2 year manufacturer's warantee.. good enough for me.

This is correct. But i have seen many cases were people managed to get full credit back (although in most cases it involved high end tvs so that might add weight to the respective situation). It requires a lot patience and time, and the op has to be willing to take its as far as possible, beyond the store...(i.e. contacting head office, forwarding emails to your local newspaper etc).

The PSP is underwritten by a third party insurance company. BB & FS are limited by the amount that they can recover from them and won't want to give you any more.
The likelihood of you getting more than you're entitled to is quite low.
